Description
@y i (dition @met GEORGE WEBB, OF LEW1sTON,MA1NE. Letters Patent No. 86,476, (lated February 2, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN FENCE-POSTS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making par: of the name.
To allpersons to whom vthescpfrescnts 'may come:
VBe it known that I, GEORGE WEBB, of Lewiston, in
the countyof Androscoggin, and State of Maine, have invented a new anduseul Improvement in Fence-Posts; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification, and represented in the aecompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1 is a front elevation, and
Figure 2, a vertical section of an iron post, provided with my invention.
In carrying out the said invention, I combine, with an iron post, a, a conical or tapering foot, b, made of cement, or a composition, such as, after application to the foot, will become set, or indurated, like stone.
The toot may be composed of hydraulic lime, or cement, or common lime and gravel, stone, sand, or other equivalent material, mixed together' with Water, so as to be in a pasty state, and be capable, by exposure to air or heat, of becoming hard, and of setting,` after having been moulded, or of having the fence-post inserted within it.
The cement or composition-foot may be moulded or formed to the proper shape, in a mould, and with a proper cavity in it to receive the fence-post, which may afterward be introduced into the cavity, and there be fixed by cement, or other proper means.
The fence-post so made, or, in other words, the combination of the iron'post and the tapering compositionfoot, in which the post is projected from the lesser end of the foot, is advantageous over a Wooden post set inthe ground, as the post is not likely tov decay, or to be lifted by the action of frost.
I am aware of' the subject of the United States patent, No. 58,776, and therefore do not claim such. In carrying outthe invention described in such patent, a hollow frustum is first set in the ground, the post being afterwards introduced into the frnstum, after which the space within the frnsturn and about the post is filled with gravel, and the top of thc frustum sealed with a water-proofcomposition or material.
I am also aware that after a post has been arranged in a hole in the ground, a conical mass ot' brick-work has been built around the post and in the hole. l make no claim to this. A 4
In carrying out my invention, a frnstum or foot ot' cement is fixed to the post, prior to thc insertion ot' cither in the earth, and thus I produce a new article Of manufacture, or fence-post, composed of an iron bar and a frustnm of cement, connected together, and thus prepared for sale or use.
I' Claim, therefore, as my invention or improvement, the new article of manufacture, or fence-post, as composed o` an iron bar or post, `anda foot or irustnm of' cement moulded or fixed thereon, in manner, and for introduction into the earth, as set forth.
` GEORGE WEBB. Witnesses T. M. VARNEY, J OHr.T SMITH.
