sppli'dinonsudodeidre,1 eos; seddsdzsrsea Toull'whemtmay Be itlcnownthat I,- Hnarlosmson, a citizen of the United States, residing in Brooklyn, in the county Y of' Kings andState of New York, have invented a cer.- n'ewand useful Improvement in for Peeling Vegetables, oi which. the following isa specication. e invention has relation to `a noveltype ofnxachine for' potatoes' and other like vegetables, *fandthje object of .the'invention is the provisionof assimple-and'reliable mechanism which is on'a large scale, and whereinallthe c an for repairs and for cleaning. .1 Another object i the invention is the provision of 'e ineans of thev described wherein. either 'ibrvsh'es corrugated or other abrading surfaces may -be employed, to advantageas abrading agents. y, Another object of the invention is the provision oi of the character described in which, on compl'etion of of the vegetables charged at once, rnachine'will automatically spundfan alarm. The: invention is a preferred'formin the-accompanying drawings wherein is .a longitudinal section ofv the stationary e of .themachine showing the rotating portion elevation, Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section of .the same, and; Seien transverse section of a modiwiov In thedrawings the stationary container is 4shown 30 composed of a sheet metal shell 1 having preferably the form'. shown wherein the cross section is circular and Vnalfrowsirom 'the middle toward both ends. The ends `ofthe casing reinforced by rings 2, to which ne boned 'dm'hgsds s and 4, centrally provided with 5 and riutendedl to support the main working 7 as shown.- Theheads 3 andi are provided on the outside with centrally placed projections, 8 and 9, which' iit into appropriate sockets the two end loana-1i. The samadre preferably eupupon and bolted to 12 as shown in Figs. 'Maid 2. v'"" 'rnd heads-s dlr-d4 are provided wim interior imaged and 14, the outer peripheries of' which 'are cjal,"asplainly Fig. 1.- The circular space the is occupied by a disk 'abrader which v.thejioriii shown in 1 and 2 is a brush of any apcharacter;4 but my invention is not limited *forni of device wherein abraders are used at the of the container in the shown. Theinteriorsurfaccofthe stationary oontainerislined mddrpna dem uw during operados with abad.
elementsof any appropriate character,L andV the" l errcdform'shown, these take the form of brushes v appror'irnately 'briitles extending inward back; Epieces 17 which are introduced in sec- 'fon find aluminium wire brushes suitable in thisconnectionl and topto accommodate the doors and gates hereinafter described.' ',The top gate consists of a cast ironback 1s pivdted du 19 and preferably provided with an inclined han 'le 20, to which is' attached a. weight 2l shown in Fig. 1, and tohold it open when in the-dotted line position shown in said figure, The under side of the dooryback 18 is provided with abraders 22 which-fill the space left at the top in the abrading lining of the container. The opening at the top of the-containeris preferably surroundedvonthree sides by a hopper 23 and the door`swings through the fourth and open side ofI the hopper as shown in Fig. 1.
"'At the bottom of the container is placed a door comv'prising a cast iron back 24 carrying interior abraders 25 which fill the spaces left at thebottom in the abrading lining of the containen 'Ihi-sfV door is`prowater and dirt from-the container. The portion ofthe door thus perforated vis shaped so as to come very near the outer lend of the;A revolving paddles. Where brushes are used as 'abraders, the top or inner surface same level asthe tips of the brushes. 'This construction causesv the mass of. water 'and vegetables to sweep clear and free.
The lower door 24 may beapplied and fastened in 'is provided l`with a rigid extension 28 to the extremity of which there is pivoted a securing arm 29 having a ha'ndle 30. The end of -the arm 29 is adapted to engage with an appropriate abutment or catch 3l on the side of the container when the door is closed and an appro- Where this construction is used the 'door opens by its own weight when the handle 30 is pulled outward and To close the door the handle is pushed against the side ofthe container and then thrust downward until the arm 29 makes engagement once more with the abutment 31 under the spring 32.
is accomplished by means of one or more lifting paddles carried by, Vand revolving -with the main shaft 7 In the preienedformshown I. use a double lifting paddle extending in oppositedirections from the shaft and formed by-.three double arms 33 made of cast iron and fastened to the main-shaft# at appropriate intervals einen? pasted rig. 2 and' along the shaft, towhich arms there areapplied striated llining the' entiie curved portion of the container. I
These abraders or brushes are cut away at the bottom vided with a perforated portion 26 toallow escape ofof this perforated portion l26 occupies virtually thel over the perforated surface, thus keeping the holes any desired lmanner but I preferv the construction shown in Fig. 2 wherein the door is pivoted at 27 and priate spring 32 is supplied ,to hold the arm 29 in place.I
the end of the arm 29 is disengaged fromthe catch 31.
Thepeeling of the vegetables withiii the container.
which ten sto hold the door down when closed, as
dividing the container into t'wo opposite equal symmetrical compartments'. This double. paddle' is l abrading plates 3 4 andf35 -substantially in the form shown yin Fig'. 2. '.These plates are lcurved at their ends as shown at 36 so that as the plates revolve the vegetables which are contained in the two `compari'.- ments are scooped up upon the plates in such al manner as to rollover and over upon themselves while at the same timerubbing on the striations provided in the surfaces 'of the curved plates.l
It is not essentialto this-invention thatV the paddle or paddles should have striationsor other moans to directly abrade the vegetables.
As shown in Fig. 2, the revolving of the paddles con-y membersof the mass so as-to present constantly new surfaces to lthe action oi the abraders. It is not essential to the performance of the above operation that the 4lifting paddles should extend inward all the way to the shalt and in such of my claims as do not so describe them, I am not to be limited to that construction. l
Material removed by ,this operation from the surface of the mass is Washed down toward the bottom oi the cont. iner by a stream o water which constantly flows inward through the water pipe 37 located near the top of the machine at the sido of the" top door which pipe is perforated along its length as plainly shown in Fig. l. This water finds its way out of the openings in the periorated portion 26 of the lower door 24 and is carried off through the tub 38 under the machine, finally finding its way out through the grating 39'in the drain pipe 40. f The end of the main shaft 7 is provided in the preerred lorrn shown with an endless screw 4l which .en -v hammer 46 stands normally in the path of movement of an arm 47 fastened to the side oi the wheel 42. The wheel and wrm are so proportioned thatone revolution'ovthe wheel willbe accomplished by a suliicient number of revolutionsV of the whole 'machine to complete the peeling of onecliar'ge 'of vegetables, and the result will be that'ss soon as this peeling is completed the arm 47 will-lit,the `hamn1er-46 and release it so as to ring the bell 45,- thus apprisingthe operator of the fact that lt 1B mme to dlscha'rge' the machme' At tbl-s mme i hack4 within said container and fixed to said shaft, subthe operator will open the ylowerzdoorin the manner above described whilethomachine. is ystill rotating,- and .thev I pptatoes together with, `the refuse remdved, izronithe'ir-surfaces will iall intoth'e -tub 38 and the niachine will be ready for a new charge When itis ydesired to repairo'r clean` thev interior of the machine itwill only be necessry'to remove the 'driving p'iilleysiandlthe head-4'-Wlie11 the interiorflinipgfvvhicli has been wedged in' place by the eom'cal'ring 14'will be released-end-can be removed.
It is immaterial to-this invention how` many lifting Apinidleslareemployed. within the easing. As shown in dotted lnes'in Fig.- 2, these paddles may be our..in number, 'dividing' 'the interior ntofiourpqdal mmpartl. msxilslplscsd 90 degrees apart. shown'in Fig.v 3 s.
#concave abi-odin@ surface' ending' in lmating*V parallelism with the inter single paddlefSS may be employed and it maybe stated in general that any appropriate number, of paddles'mayfi be used'without departing from this invntion.-
I As 'shown in 3,3. corrugated interior surfacemayi be used for thel lining of the casing l, in place oi the l brushes shown'in Figs. I and 2 -without; departingiroin this invention.
Itis to be noted that I prefer (Where brushes are used) to form the operating suriaceoi Vthe brushes so as v to present irregularities as indicated in the cross se'cw i.
tion shown in Fig. 2f These irregularities accom'me# date the interior surface to the irregularities in the snr-- faces of the vegetables acted-upon, and promote `eilicency of the device.
