UNITED STATES WILLIAM E. JOHNSON, OF NEWBURGH, NEW YORK.
CYMBAL AND DRUM PLAYING APPARATUS.
No. sospesi Speeieation of Letters Patent.
Patented eng. 20, 1907.
Application iiled March 23, 1907. Serial No. 364,162.
To all lwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newburgh, in the county of Orange and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cymbal and Drum Playing Apparatus; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains, to make and use same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and iigures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in apparatus [or playing bass diums and cymbals, and the object of the invention is to produce a simple and el'lieient apparatus which may be attached to a drum and so arranged as to operate a drum stick and cymbal beater by means of a hinged pedal, and the invention consists in various details of construction and in combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
I illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view showing the application of my invention to a drum. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the pedal apparatus. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the cymbal holding bracket arm, and Fig. 4 is an enlarged perspective view of the apparatus for holding the drum stick and cymbal beater and to which the pedal strap is connected.
Reference now being had to the details oi the drawings by letter, A designates a shell of a drum, A a hoop at one end thereof, and A2, the head of the drum.
B designates a plate having integral hooks adapted to engage over the hoop at the end of the drum and said plate is provided with an elongated slot through which an adjusting screw Bf passes upon which screw a winged nut B2 is mounted. Said screw vis provided with an aperture b in which one end of a coiled spring O is connected.
E designates an angle lever which is pivotally mounted upon a bracket arm Ef projecting from the plate B and to one arm E2 of said angle lever the spring C is connected.
F designates a socket which is either integral with or attached to said angle lever and carries a thumb screw F4 G designates a drum stick which is held in said socket member by the thumb screw F/ and is provided with a head Gf made preferably of wood and covered with cotton, chamois or other soft material.
H designates a stiap which is fastened to an arm of said angle lever and also to the foot tread K, shown clearly in Fig. 2 of the drawings. Said foot tread is hinged at Ii/ to the heel plate K2 and a buffer N is fastened to the bottom of the tread intermediate its hinged end and the end connected to said strap. The strap H is provided with a buckle whereby the length of the same may be adjusted. In order to hold the heel from moving backward upon the plate Y2, a ilange K3 is formed about the rear end of said heel plate and against which the heel is adapted to Contact in the event of any tendency of the foot to slip backward.
Q designates a bracket arm having a hooked end Q/ carrying an adjusting screw Q2 which is adapted to bear' against an angle member R which is adjustably held upon the hooked end of said bracket arm and provided for the purpose of coperating with a portion of said hooked end to clamp and securely hold the bracket arm to the hoop of the drum. Said arm Q has an offset at Q3 and carries a screw S upon which a winged nut S/ is mounted.
T designates the cymbal which is held by the screw S and nut S/ to said arm Q in the position shown in Fig. l of the drawings.
J designates a cymbal playing rod which is curved and held by means of a set-screw I in a socket I upon an arm of said angle lever and is so positioned that it will swing with the drum stick when said lever i't tilted.
By the provision oi a cymbal and drum playing apparatus as shown and described, it will be noted that adadjustment mechanism is afforded for the pedal by means of the buffer which acts with the proper adjustment of the strap to regulate the touch ot the stick and cymbal playing rod.
By the provision of the apparatus shown and described, the operator may sit sidewise or facing the drum and conveniently operate the apparatus, the device being so constructed that it may be readily and quickly applied to any drum.
That I claim is 1. A drum and cymbal playing apparatus comprising, in combination with the drum and cymbal, a plate adapted to be clamped to the hoop of the drum, a tilting member carried by said plate, a spring secured to said plate and means for adjusting the tension of said spring, a pedal connected to said tilting member, a drum stick and a cymbal tapping arm carried by said tilting member, as set forth.
2. A drum and cymbal playing apparatus comprising in combination with a drum and cymbal, a plate adapted to be clamped to the hoop of the drum, a tilting member carried by said plate, a pedal and connections between the same and said tilting member, a drum stick and a cymbal tapping arm secured to said member, an adjusting screw mounted upon said plate, and a spring secured at one end to the tilting member and its other end to said screw` as set forth.
A drum and cymbal operating apparatus comprising in combination with a drum and cymbal, a slotted plate and means for fastening the same to the hoop of the drum, a tilting member carried b v said plate, a drum stick and cymbal tapping arm secured to said member, a hinged pedal, connections between the same and said tilting member, a screw carried by said plate and passing through the slot therein, a winged nut upon said screw, and a spring secured at one end of said bracket arm and its other end to said screw, as set forth.
4. A drum and cymbal playing apparatus comprising, in combination with a drum and cymbal, a plate adapted to be clamped to the hoop of the drum and having integral hooks for engagement with the hoop, a screw passing through said plate, a thumb nut upon said screw, a pivotal angle lever mounted upon said plate, a spring connecting an arm ot' said angle lever with said screw, a cymbal and means for fastening the same to the hoop of the drum, a drum stick and a cymbal rod fastened to said angle lever, a tread, and connections between the same and said angle lever, as set forth.
5. A drum and cymbal playing apparatus comprising, in combination with a drum and cymbal, a plate adapted to be clamped to the hoop of the drum and having integral hooks for engagement with the hoop, a screw passing through said plate, a thumb nut upon said screw, a pivotal angle lever mounted upon said plate, a spring connecting an arm of said angle lever with said screw, a cymbal and means for fastening the same to the hoop of the drum, a drum stick and a cymbal rod fastened to said angle lever, a heel plate, a tread hinged thereto, and a strap connecting said tread with said angle lever, as set forth.
6. A drum and cymbal playingl apparatus comprising, in combination with a drum and cymbal, a plate adapted to be clamped to the hoop of the drum and having integral hooks l'or engagement with the hoop, a screw passing through said plate, a thumb nut upon saltl screw, a pivotal angle lever mounted upon Said plate, a springl connecting an arm of said angle lever with said screw, a bracket arm and means for fastening the same to the hoop of the drum, a cymbal fastened to said bracket arm, a drum stick and a cymbal playing rod fastened to said angle lever, a tread, and an adjusting strap connecting said tread with saidangle lever, asset forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto atlix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM E. JOHNSON.
