centerer, hereinafter described and claimed, calculated to be used to advantage in marking the centers of round and square shafts of different sizes.
ln the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification: Figure l is an elevation of the centerer constituting the preferred `embodiment of my invention; the same being shown with its parts in'their normal positions. Fig. 2 is a vertical section oi the same with the marking pin partly in elevation. Fig. 3 is a vertical section showing by full lines the positions in which the several parts are placed precedent to the propulsion of the marking pin, and by dotted lines the position which said pin assumes when forced or impelled forward by the spring back'of the same. Fig. 4 is a transverse section taken in the plane indicated by the line 4 4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is an elevation showing the marking'pin and the interior tube in which said pin is adapted to move, and: Fig. 6 is a transverse section taken in the plane indicated by the line 6-6 of Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views oi the drawings, referring to which:
A is the upper and outer casing section of the centerer, which is closed at its upper end and open at its lower end, and is provided in its side with a longitudinalslot a, and B is the lower and inner casing section. This latter is telescopically arranged in the section A, is open at its upper end, and is provided in its lower end with a central vertical, smooth bore b for a purpose presently set forth. The said section B is connected to the section A through a screw c carried by section B and movable in the slot a of the section A; and its lower end d is reduced and exteriorly threaded for the detachable connection oi the interiorly threaded shank e of'a hollow cone C through which extends an aperture f alined with the smooth bore b oi casing section B. By virtue ofthe shank oi the cone C being detachably connected t0.the lower end of casing section B, it will be observed that the cone C may be expeditiously and easily removed and replaced witha larger or smaller cone, thus increasing the range oi usefulness ofthe device.
D is the marking pin of the device. The lower portion f of this 'pin is of a size to snugly t the smooth bore b in casing section B and the aperture f in the cone C, and the upper portion g is comparatively large in about the proportion illustrated, is stepped as shown,

and is provided with a lradially disposed socket It, a radial pin i movable in said socket, and a coiledl spring j arranged in the socket and back of the pin so as to press the latter outward.
Y E is the inner tube of the device which is open at its lower and upper ends and is longitudinally slotted at l to receive the pin i. The said tube E is fixed by a screw min casingsection A; and it snugly receives the upper, comparatively large portion g oi the marking pin D; and it also receives anupper, comparatively small coiled spring F, as shown.
Surrounding the marking pin D and interposed between the lower end oi the tube E and the lower portion oi the casing section B is a large coiled spring G, the function of which will be presently pointed out in detail.
My novel centerer is used aiter the manner of an awlthat is to say, the user places the hollow cone C on the end of the shaft to be marked, keeping as near in line as possible with the shaft, and presses the upper and outer casing section or handle A toward the shaft, in the same manner as an awl is forced into a piece of wood, until the marking pin D is heard to strike, when the center of the shaft will be found to be accurately and positively marked.
At M in the upper and outer casing section A is an inclined portion designed to cooperate with the pin i, and with this in mind the operation of the marker will be fully understood from the following:
It will he seen that when the casing section A is iorced downward, the tube E will be moved downward with it and the lower spring- G will be compressed between the lower end of said tube E and the lower end portion oi the casing section B, ready`to return the said tube and casing section A to their normal positions subsequent to a marking operation. lt will also be seen that the spring G will cushion the downward movement of tube E and casing section A, and that by reason of the pin t' on marking .pin D engaging the upper end of the casing section B, the spring F will be compressed between the upper end of said marking pin and the upper end of the casing'seetion A until the inclined portion M of the casing section A engages and presses the pin i inward and clear oi the end of casing section B when the spring F will expand and forcibly impel the pin D downward to efect the marking. Then when pressure is removed from the upper end of the casing section A, it will be seen that the spring G acting against the lower end oi the Atube E will return said tube, and the marking pin D and casing section A to their normal positions, and as soon as the pint' reaches a point above the upper end oi the casing section B it will be forced outward by its spring and will assume a y position above said end of section B ready for another operation of the marker.
It will be gathered from the foregoing that pressure exerted on the casing section A is al1 that is necessary to operate my` novel centerer, and that when such pressure is removed the parts are automatically returned to their normal positions ready for another operation.
It will also be gathered that the centerer is simple, compact and inexpensive in construction and embodies no delicate parts such as are likely to get out of order after a short` period of use.
Having described .my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by, Letters-Patent, is:
1. A centerer comprising casing sections one of which is movable with respect to the other, a marking pin, springs respectively for moving said pin in opposite dlrections, means on the pin for engaging one casing section to enable the other casing section to put the spring back of the marking pin under tension, and means on such other casing section for disengaging the means on the pin from the rst mentioned casing section.
2. A centerer comprising casing sections one of which ls movable with respect to the other and :is provided with an inclined portion, a marking pin, springs respectively for moving said pin in opposite directions, and a radial, spring-pressed pin carried by the marking pin and .arranged to engage such other casing section and to be engaged by the inclined portion of the first mentione casing section.
3; A centerer comprising a casing section having aV hollow cone and also having a smooth-bore, a casing section connected to and movable with respect to the rst mentioned section, a marking pin, a spring for returning said pin to its normal position, a spring backing the marking pin and arranged to impel the same forward,v
and a spring-pressed, radial pin carried by the marking pin and arranged to bring up against the rear end of the first mentioned casing section and also arranged to be engaged by the second mentioned casing section and disengaged from'the first mentioned section.
4. `A centerer comprising a casing section having a central, smooth bore, a hollow cone detachably connected to the casing section and having an aperture alined with the smooth bore thereof, a marking pin movable through said bore and aperture, and means for impelling the marking pin through said bore and aperture.
^ 5. A centerer comprising an outer slotted casing section having an inclined portion, an in'ner casing section telescopically arrangedin the outer section and connected thereto by a port movable ln the slot thereof and having a smooth bore, an interior, slotted tube secured in the outer casing section, a marking pin having an enlarged 4portion movable in said interior tube and also having a radial, spring-pressed pin movable in the slot of the tube and. arranged to' bring up againstthe inner casing section and be engaged by the inclined portion of'the outer casing section, a spring arranged between the forward end of the interior tube and the inner casing section, and a spring arranged in said tube and back of the marking pin.
