Patented Aug. 6, 1907.
Application tiled December 18, 1905. Serial No. 292,385.
To NZZ whom it may Concern:
lie it known that I, LINCOLN Somier, a citizen oi the United States, residing at Brownsville, in the c ounty of Union, State oi Indiana, have invented certain new and usel'ul Improvements in Rope-Forming Attachments for Binders; and I do hereby declare the iollo'wing to be a lull, clear, and exact description of the invention7 such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to rope iorming attachments for hinders and has lor its object to provide an attachment for binders which may be readily applied to the same and which will iorm a continuous rope oi straw lor use in binding grain. i
A further object ot the invention is to provide a rope forming attaclun ent which will be operated by the drawing ot the straw through the same by the pressure rolls.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and arrangement oi parts shown in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view ot my invention, the cover for the same being partly broken away. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation ol the same. Fig. 3 is a detail vertical longitudinal sectional view through the attachment.. Fig. 4 is an end elevation. Fig. 5 is a detail vertical transverse sectional view on the line 545 of Fig. 1. Fig. Gis a similar view on the line GAG ol Fig. 1. Fig. 7 is a detail view in elevation oi one of the straw twisters, and, Fig. 8 is a detail side elevation of the other of the straw twisters, the same being shown removed from its bearing blocks. Fig. 9 is a view in detail ot one of the straw twisters.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 10 denotes the body of my attachment which comprises a pair or' troughs 11 and 12, each including major and minor sides 13 and 14 and 15 and 1G respectively, the minor sides 14 and 1G being provided with flanges 17 and 18 respectively. rI`he trough 11 is slidably mounted in the trough 12 and has its I'lange 17 resting upon the upper face ot a bar 19 which is secured to the underside ot' the flange 1S of the trough 12 and also to the binder (not shown) between the conveyor and the packer. Secured to the under side ofthe trough 12 at its other edge is a bar 20 which extends laterally from the said trough and beneath the corresponding portion of the trough 11. Braces 21. have their ends secured between the bars 19 and 2O and the adjacent portions oi the trough 12 and extend transversely of the said trough and beneath the same. Similar braces 22 are secured to the upper lace ot the bars 19 and 20 and extend beneath the trough 11 in spaced relation to the same. Secured to the under side oi' the trough 11 adjacent its sides are guide blocks 23 provided with ilanges 24 which extend from their outer face to iorin grooves 25 between the said flanges and the said trough and bars 2G are secured to the braces 22 and are provided with, l lan ges 27 which extend from their faces adjacent the said trough and work in the grooves 25 in the bearing blocks 23 A bearing bracket 2S is secured to the outer lace of one of the bars 26 and a similar bracket 29 is secured to the under side ol' a bar 30 which is connected at its en'ds to the braces and mounted in the said bearing brackets 28 and 29 is a stem 31 which is provided at its outer end with a hand-wheel 32 and at its inner end with a pinion 33, The pinion is in mesh with a rack-bar 31 which is secured to the under side oi the trough 11 and extends longitudinally ol' the same.
From the lorcgoing, it will be seen that by rotating the stein 31 and consequently the pinion 337 the trough 11 will be shil'tcd longitudinally in the trough 12 and that by so shifting the said trough the attachment may be adjusted to accommodate different length ol straw.
Mounted in the bottom oi the trough 1l is a bearing bracket 35 in which is mounted a shalt 3G carrying a ieed roller 37. The bracket 35 includes laterally extending portions 38 and 39, one ol' which is provided with spaced pairs ot' lugs 39 lor a purpose to be hereinafter described. A second, bearing bracket 40 is disposed upon the bearing bracket and includes side members 41, end connecting portions 42 and lateral extensions 43 which rest upon the lateral extensions 3S and 39 of the bracket 35, one oi the extended portions 43 being' provided with oppositely extending lugs 41 which are engaged between the lugs ol' each pair ot lugs 39. In the sides oi the bracket 40 is journaled a shalt 45 upon which is mounted a feed roll er 16, the said roller being disposed directly above the roller 37 and kin spaced relation thereto. A bolt 47 is engaged in regis tering openings 48 in the extended portions 39 and 43 and has its lower end engaged through an opening 5() in the bottom of the trough 11. The lower portion of the bolt 47 is screw-threaded and is provided with a thumb-nut 5l. between which and the underside ol the extended portions 39 oi the bracke 35 is engaged a helical spring 52, which when the thumb-nut 5l. is tightened7 exerts a pressure between the rollers 37 and 4G comprising substantially cylindrical bodies having ridges 53 formed upon their peripheries, the said ridges extending iront end to end of the said rollers. The end connecting portions 42 of the bearing bracket are provided with alining openings 54 i'or a purpose to be hereinafter described.
Mounted upon opposite ends ot' the sha lt 3G and 45 are bevel gears 55 and 5G respectively, the gear 55 being in mesh with a bevel gear 57 mounted upon a shalt 58 which is in turn mormted in suitable bearing blocks 59 carried by the tr'ough 1.1.. Adjacent its opposite end to the bevel gear 57, the shalt 5S is provided with a pinion 59 which meshes with a gear G0 on the periphery ol straw twister' Gl, the said twister being mounted in a suitable bearing bracket (i2.
The straw twister (il comprises an annular body 62L having laterally extend in g annular' ilanges 62", which is seated in an annular' groove G2c in the bracket G2. On its inner periphery, the annular body G2 ot the straw twister 6l is provided with a series of straw twisting teeth (i3. The gear' portion G0 oi the straw twister Gl is ar'ranged to extend through slots 6ft formed in its sides ol the bearing br'acket G2. rlhe gear 5G is in mesh with a bevel gear' 64 mounted adjacent one end ot a shaft 65, the said shalt being mounted at its extreme ends in suitable bearing brackets 6G carried by the trough ll. A gear' (i7 is secured to the shalt GG which is in mesh with a gear 68 forming a part oi a straw twister G9, The straw-twister G9 comprises an annular body 70 which carries on its outer' periphery the gear GS, the said gear extending in slots iormed in the sides ol a bear'ing bracket 7l and the annrrlar body oi the str'aw twister' being revol ubly mounted in an annular' gr'oove 7 2 in the said bearing bracket. Arms 7 3 extend laterally irom one side oi the annular body'ol the straw-twister and are connected at their ends to diametrically opposite points on an annular member 75 which is provided with an ammlar [lange 76 upon its periphery, the said ilange 7 G being engaged in an annular gr'oove 77 formed in a bearing block or bracket 7S mounted in the trough ll. in rear oi the biacket 7l. The inner periphery ot the annular body oi the straw twister 69 is provided with a series ol straw twisting teeth 79 and extending l'orwardly upon the said annular body is a straw gatherer S() which is in the iorm oi' a blade and is twisted in helical torni and -tapered toward its l'orward end which lies in a plane beyond the remai nder ot the gatherer.
Secured to the outer end ol the trough 11 and outwardly oi the bearing bracket (i2 is a guide member Sl which comprises a pair ol arms 82 which ar'e held in spaced relation throughout their entire length by means ol a block 83 through the medirrm ol which. the guide melnber is secured to the trough l1. and by means oi a block 84 which is disposed intermediate the ends ol' the arms 82. The arms 82 extend upwardly and outwardly ,from the trough 11. l'or a short distance and are thence curved downwardly and rearwardly as at 85 and have their 'free end portions extending beneath, the lsaid trough. .lournaled between the arms 82 ar'e rollers S6, one oi the rollers being disposed at the point where the arms commence to curve downwardly, a second r'oller being disposed at substantially the middle ol the bight portion lormed by bending the arms downwardly and rearwardly and the last ol the rollers being mounted at the eXtreme [ree ends ol the arms. One ol the edges oi the block 84- is recessed as shown at 87, the said recessed portion conforming to the contour ol the periphery oi the adjacent roller. A yoke 8S has its bight portion 89 disposed below the roller located at the extreme free end ol the guide member and has the ends oi its spaced arms 9() turned inwardly toward each other as at 91 to rotatably support the said roller between the arms 85.
A cover 92 is hinged as at 93 to the major side of the trough 1l adjacent its side edge and is provided at one oi its ends with a downturned lia-nge 94 and has its forward end portion curved downwardly as at 95.
