' tenors, and the object is to provide a simple, strong and cheap snap fastener, the two members of which may be readily applied to an article,and conveniently engaged and disengaged andin which said members will not be liable to become accidentally disconnected by continued use.
With the above object in view, the invention con-' sists in the novel features of construction hereinafter fully described, particularly pointed out in the claims and clearly illustrated by the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a view showing the several parts of the stud and socketmembers detached and separated; Fig. 2, a sectional view showing the socket member of the fastener applied to a fabric, and Fig. 3, a similar view of the stud member.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, 1 designates the shell of the socketmember which may be ornamented in any manner, the continuity of,the flange 2 of which is broken by the formation of tangs 3 at intervals for the purpose to be set forth. The flangeportions between the tangs 3 are turned or clenched over a disk 4 having an eyelet 5 formed integral therewith. This leaves the tangs 3 projecting for the purpose of biting into the fabric andpreventing the turning of the shell 1 which is objectionable as it wears the material to which the fastener is attached'and also because where a device of any kind is placed upon the shell as in the case of fasteners for military use, said device is not maintained in properposition. Said eyelet 5 is inserted through the fabric and then through a perforation in the end-wall of the casing 6 of the socketmember, the eyeletbeing spread or clenched on the inside of said casing which at this point is formed with a' circular recessto receive the clenched end of said eyelet. By forming this recess, an annular shoulder 7 is provided for the springs 8. The clenched or spread end of the eyelet is below the plane of the annular shoulder and does not interfere, with the free action of the springs, and at the same time a socket is formed to receive the head of the stud-member.
The spring retaining device consists of two spring members 8, each comprising a recurved wire having two approximately concentrically curved portions, the
inner one of which projects slightly within the margin of the stud-receiving opening and the outer one of which has a firm bearing on the annular wall of the easing which forms an abutment, preventing lateral displacement thereof by the stud. The two spring memhere are held from rotation in the casing by a projection 9 formed on the annular shoulder, 7 After the spring members have beenplaced in position, a disk 10 having a stud-receiving opening is inserted in the casing, and the flange of the latter turned thercovcr.
The stud-member is formed tubular, with a head 11 and a shank 12 having an annular shoulder 13 formed thereon adjacent to the head. The shank extends through the fabric andthrough a disk 14 which is inserted thereon on the opposite side of the fabric to the shoulder 13, the end of the. shank being clenched or spread over said disk.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. A socket member for snap fasteners consisting of a casing formed with an annular shoulder, a disk in said casing having a stud-receiving opening, a spring retaining device disposed between said shoulder and disk having two members, each consisting of two approximately concentrically curved portions, the inner one of which projects 'slghtly within the margin of the stud receiving opening,
and a projection carried by said annular shoulder and dis posed to prevent the turning of said spring retaining device within the casing.
'2. A socket member for snap fasteners comprising a disk having an eyelet to be inserted through the material, a shell adapted to be secured on said disk by turning its edge over the latter and provided with tangs to engage the material, a casing adapted to be disposed on the oppw site slde of the material having an-annular shoulder and an opening to receive the eyelet, the eyelet being clenched on the inside of said casing, a disk in saldcusing and held therein by turning the edge of the casing thereover, and :1 spring retaining device disposed in the casing between the annular shoulder and the disk and consisting of two members, each having two approximately concentrically curved portions, one of which projects slightly within the margin of the stud receiving opening.
