In the construction of vault lights it is desirable to incorporate the greatest possible lighting or transparent area compatible with strength and rigidity. It is further desirable that the same be constructed at the least so that the outer faces of their webs lie in contact with the vertical edges of the tongues or flanges 4 and are secured in position by means of rivets passing through one of the flanges thereof and through the plate 1. The free ends of the flanges of each two adjacent channel bars 16 are thus opposed and are separated by a space of sufficient width to permit cement or asphalt to be admitted to fill said channel bars and said space and 18 is introduced after the glass prisms 17 are disposed in position over the openings 5 and rest upon the free ends of the tongues or flanges 4 and upon the upper faces of said channel bars 16.
The flanges 2 of the plate 1 are in all instances preferably of such'depth that their upper edges flush with the upper faces of the prisms, but such depth is not essential. The construction may be further modified by substituting angle irons 19 for the said channel bars 16 as shown in Fig. 7.
In Fig. 8 I have illustrated another modification in construction which consists in employing a corrugated plate 20 and also in employing channel bars 21 having corrugated flanges, said plate being adapted to stiffen the structure and being identical in other features of construction with the plate 1, particular illustration of the openings, etc. being orn'tted from Fig. 8. The corrugated flanges of the channel bars 21 are adapted to present a larger area for adhesion of the cement filling and are stiffer than plane flanges thus enabling a lighter metal to be employed in their construction.

A vault light comprising a plate provided with openings, parallel reinforcing members secured to the said plate and bordering said openings, transparent prisms disposed over reinforcing members, and a filling disposed on said plate and embedding said reinforcing members and said prisms, the upper faces of the latter being exposed.

8. A vault light comprising a plate provided with a plurality of rows of rectangular openings, flanges integral with said plate bordering each of said openings on two opposing sides thereof, structural iron strips extending over said plate and secured thereto, said strips being disposed to border said openings on the free sides thereof and to abut against the side edges of said flanges, transparent prisms disposed over said openings and supported upon said flanges and said strips, and a filling disposed upon said plate and embedding said strips and said prisms, the upper faces of the latter being exposed.
9. A vault light comprising a plate provided with a plurality of rows of rectangular openings, flanges integral with said plate bordering each of said openings on two opposing sides thereof, channel bars extending over said in contactwith the side edges of said flanges of said open ings, transparent prisms disposed over said openings and supported upon said flanges thereof and said channel bars, and a filling disposed on said plate and within said channel bars and embedding said prisms the upper faces of said prisms being exposed.
10. A vault light comprising plurality of rows of rectangular with said plate bordering each opposing sides thereof, channel having the outer faces of their plate and secured thereto, said channel bars having the outer faces of their flanges disposed in contact with the side edges of said flanges of said openings, transparent prisms disposed over said openings and supported upon said flanges and said channel bars, said prisms being of greater area on their supported than on their upper faces, flanges on the edges of said plate having their free edges disposed flush with the upper faces of said prisms, and a filling disposed on said plate and embedding said channel bars and said prisms, the upper faces of the latter being exposed.
