Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMAN HANSEN, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and .State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Feed Mechanism, of which the following is a specification, the same being a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a device whereby materials may be fed to a machine, in order to be treated or operated upon at any desired motion or advance, or at any predetermined rate of speed, and also whereby the feed movement produced may be so small as to be practically infinitesimal, which device embodies certain novel features of construction and combination and arrangement of parts forming in operation a simple and efficient organization.
To attain the desired end, this, my invention consists in the construction, arrangement and operation of parts herein set forth.
In order to enable the invention to be fully understood, I will proceed to explain the same by reference to the drawings, illustrative of one embodiment of the invention, which accompany and form a part of the specification, and in which Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a machine constructed according to my invention; Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the feed disk on an enlarged scale; and Fig. 4 is a section of the feed disk taken on the line 4, 4, Fig. 3.

Referring particularly by reference symbols to the drawings, A denotes any suitable supporting framework or base for the machine proper, which. consists of the following parts, namely:a frame B constructed and arranged tosupport a pulley B rises from a table 0. Vertical bearings D serve to support feed rolls E, the upper one of which carries a lifting arm 6. The proper tension or bite of the rolls is secured by means of an adjusting device d of any ordinary or suitable description. The rolls E carry respectively gear wheels 0 6 and to the lower roll is secured a bevel gear 6" which meshes with a bevel gear f carried by the shaft F supported by the table 0.
At one end of the shaft F is preferably located a brake G of any ordinary or suitable construction, and operated and adjusted by a band wheel H. The other end of the shaft F ordinarily calries a feed disk consisting preferably of two walls J, J, and an intermediate ratchet wheel F. The disks J, J, are preferably formed with extensions or ears respectively designated by j, j, and oppositely disposed as regards each other.

also constructed and arranged to be actuated by means of an adjustable pin 70 fastened to and working in a slot l of the disk or plate L which is carried by the shaft of the pulley B. By this means a reciprocatory movement is given to the feed disk in one direction upon the rotation of the pulley B, the said disk being in this connection to all intents and purposes a source of power moving with an intermittent action. Manifestly if the feed disk is reversed and the pin it is secured to the ear j, the feed will be in the opposite direction.
The feed disk is suitably secured to the shaft F, as by bushings f and f 2 and a nut f M are pawls working on pins m, which pawls are supported by the walls J, J and engage the ratchet wheel F, and are held in contact therewith by the springs M supported by pins m. I ordinarily use pawls so constructed that no two shall be of the same length, those shown being arranged in series, according to their gradually diminishing length, or so that each one will be shorter than an adjacent one excepting the last one of the series. The number of pawls used depends upon the size of the ratchet wheel and the number of teeth formed thereon. In the present instance I show 13 pawls, each pawl being .00592 of an inch shorter than its adjacent one, so as to make of the thirteen .071 of an inch difference between the longest and the shortest pawl.
The pawls are differentiated in their lengths relative to the spacing of the ratchet teeth. I prefer to construct the parts in relation to the number and size of the ratchet teeth and the difference in the lengths of the pawls, so that the width of a tooth shall equal the difference between the lengths of the longest and shortest pawls. The ratchet teeth may be, if desired, somewhat longer, but not shorter, than the said difference between lengths of the said longest and shortest pawl. By means of this construction, one of the pawls will always engage a tooth of the ratchet wheel F, no
matter what position it may be in, and a very fine or What I claim as my invention is 1. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination with a shaft, and a source of intermittent power, of
feed mechanism consisting of a wall, a series of pawls supported thereby, and a ratchet wheel, the pawls being 5 a forward or reverse direction, and an adjustable connection between the source of power and the said feed mechanism.
2. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination with a shaft, and a source of intermittent power, of feed mechanism consisting of two walls, a series of pawls supported thereby, and an intermediate ratchet wheel, the pawls being diiferentiated in their lengths relative to the spacing of the ratchet teeth, means to attach the feed mechanism to the shaft and to the source of power so as to feed in either a forward or reverse direction, and an adjustable connection between the source of power and the said feed mechanism.
3 In an apparatus of the class described, the combination with ashaft, and a source of intermittent power, of feed mechanism consisting of a wall, a series of pawls supported thereby, and a ratchet wheel, the pawls being ditferentiated in their lengths relative as to the spacing of the ratchet teeth, means to attach the feed mechanism to the shaft and to the source of power so as to feed in either a forward or reverse direction, and a connection between the source of power and the said feed mechanism.
