DEVICE FOR ATTACHING RUBBER DISKS TO BOTTLE-STOPPERS.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HENRY N. BALCOM and GEORGE F. BALCOM, citizens of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Devices for Attaching Rubber Disks to Bottle-Stoppers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a device for attaching rubber washers or disks to bottle stoppers.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved and simple means for doing this work. The implement is operated by foot power, to stretch the washer or disk, to enlarge the hole therein so that the head of the stopper can be forced through the hole, the treadle being then released to allow the disk to contract around the neck of the stopper.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front view of the implement. Fig. 2 is a side view. Fig. 3 is a side view with the disk or washer stretched, and the head of the stopper being inserted therein.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 6 indicates a guide standard having a foot? bolted to a bench or table The standard has a vertical way or groove extending down the middle thereof, in which is slidable up and down a bar 8, connected by a strap 9 to a treadle 10. The bar is held in the groove by cross plates 11 on the front, and it is normally held raised or at the upper end of the groove by means of a spring 12 connected between a pin 13 on the back of the standard and a pin 14 projecting rearwardly from the bar 8, through a slot in the standard.
At or just above the upper end of the groove in which the bar 8 slides the standard is provided with a forwardly projecting pin 15, substantially half round in shape, and the bar 8 carries a complementary half round pin 16. When the bar is pulled up, the pins come together so that the rubber disk may be easily slipped thereon, the pins extending through the hole in the disk. Then by pulling the bar by means of the treadle the rubber is stretched, elongating and enlarging the hole in the disk so that the head of the stopper 19 may be slipped through the hole, and the disk may then be pulled off the pin by a smart forward pull on the stopper, which disk then contracts into place in the groove or neck at the head 01'' the stopper. When the treadle is released the spring lifts the slide bar and brings the pins together for a succeeding operation.
We claim:
1. A device for attaching rubber washers to bottle stoppers comprising, in Combination, two members slidable with respect to each other, each of'said members having a pin. which pins are movable with the members to and from each other, a spring connecting said members and acting to bring the pins together, and means to slide said members to separate the pins.
2. A device for attaching rubber washers to bottle stoppers having, in combination, a guide with a pin at one end thereof, and a slide in the guide having a pin at the corresponding end, said pins being in contact or separated according to the position of the slide, a spring connected to the slide and acting to move the slide to bring the pins together, and means connected to the slide, to pull the pins apart.
3. In a device for attaching rubber washers to bottle stoppers. in combination. a standard having a groove therein and a pin at the end of the groove, and a bar slidable in the groove and having a pin at the end movable to and from said pin, and arranged to stretch a Washer placed on the pins. a spring connected to the bar and acting to lift the same to bring the pins together, and a treadle connected to the bar, to pull the same down.
