Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, SILAS E. BAILOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tarkio, in the county of Atchison and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Cultivator, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in Cultivators.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of Cultivators, more especially that shown and described in Patent No. 7 80,930, granted to me the 24th day of January, 1905, and to provide means for enabling the members of the several gangs of plow or cultivator beams to be adjusted independently of each other to arrange the cultivator-s either at the same elevation, or to position them irregularly to suit the character of the soil.
A further object of the invention is to improve the construction of the means for operating the shiftable connection for changing the direction of the cultivator, and to dispense with the oscillatory segment and the reversely arranged flexible connections, shown and described in the said patent for actuating the shiftable connection.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of sacri icing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings:Figure 1 is a plan view of a cultivator, constructed in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the cultivator. Fig. 4 is a central longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail sectional view, illustrating the manner of adjustably connecting the lifting rods of the plow or cultivator beams with the yoke levers. Fig. 6 is a detail view partly in section, illustrating the construction of the oscillatory T-shaped lever and the spring for connecting the same with the shiftable rod or bar.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
The frame of the machine is' constructed substantially the same as that shown and described in the said patent, and the carrying wheels 1 are mounted on spindles of crank axles 2, which are provided with vertical pivot portions 3, journaled in suitable bearings or brackets 4. The brackets 4 are located at the ends of the axletree 5, and the rear ends of the forwardly extending arms 6 are secured to the brackets. The arms 6 are connected by a shiftable rod or bar 7, which is adapted to be moved transversely of the machine to change the direction of the latter. When the connecting bar or red 7 is moved in either direction, the pivots 3 of the crank axle 5 are turned in the bearings of the brackets 4, and the carrying wheels are swung in unison either to the right or to the left, according to the direction in which the shil'table bar or member 7 is moved.
The connecting bar is actuated by means of a substantially T-shaped lever 8, composed of a central vertical arm 9 and approximately horizontal laterally extending arms 10, with which foot levers or treadles 11 are connected by links 12, or other suitable connections. The T-shaped lever is pivoted at the inner end of the said arms to a bracket 13 by a bolt 14, and the central upwardly extending arm 9 is connected with the shiftable rod or bar by means of a spring 15, forming a yieldiable connection and adapted to permit the upper end of the central arm 9 to move through an arc of a circle without raising or lowering the shiftable bar or member 7. The spring 15, which is secured at one end by rivets, or other suitable fastening devices to the upper face of the shiftable bar or member, is curved upwardly, and it terminates at its other end in an eye, which receives a bolt 16, or other suitable fastening device for connecting the spring to the upper end of the central arm of the lever. The T-shaped lever is oscillated by depressing one or the other of the foot levers or treadles.
The bracket 13, which is substantially V-shaped, is provided at the upper ends of its sides with quarter bends, and the terminal portions 17 are secured by bolts, or other suitable fastening devices to a pair of crossed braces 18, extending from the axletree 5 to a from frame bar 19.
The front frame bar 19, which is suitably secured to the lower faces of the draft beams or tongues 20, is constructed of angle iron, being L- shaped in cross section and consisting of vertical and horizontal flanges, the horizontal flange being fitted against the lower faces of the said draft bars or beams 20. The crossed braces 18, which are arranged at an angle to each other and to the median line of the ma- 4 chine, are crossed near their front ends and secured at the points of crossing by a bolt 21, or other suitable fastening device. The crossed braces are provided adjacent to their points of crossing with quarter bends, which arrange their front portions in a horizontal plane. The horizontally disposed front portions are bolted, or otherwise secured to the lower face of the horizontal flange of the front frame bar 19. The rear terminals of the crossed diagonally arranged braces are bent at an angle, and are secured against the front face of the axletree 5. The front ends of the levers or treadles are pivoted to a pair of vertical braces 22, which have their upper and lower ends bent at right angles, the upper ends being bolted to the lower faces of the horizontal flange of the frame bar 19, and the lower terminals being secured to a horizontal brace 23. The ends 24 of the horizontal brace 23 are bent downward at right angles and are provided with openings to receive inner laterally extending pivots or journals 25 of arches 26, and are secured to the said pivots or journals by means of keys 27. The arches, which are secured to and depend from the front frame bar, have their sides extended laterally to provide the said inner-pivots or journals 25 and outer pivots or journals 28.
The laterally extending pivots or journals of the arches receive plow beams 29, arranged in pairs and provided with suitable cultivating devices. The plow beams are connected by lifting rods 30 with yoke levers 31, and have coiled springs 32 disposed on them for forcing the cultivating devices into the ground. The coiled springs are constructed and arranged similar to those of the said patent.
The upper ends 33 of the lifting. rods are threaded and engage interiorly threaded eyes 34, which are provided with horizontal pivots 35, and the latter are secured by keys 36, or other suitable fastening devices in bearing openings 37 of plates 38. The plates 38 are secured by bolts 39, or other suitable fastening devices to the sides of the yoke levers, and have lower enlarged portions 40, fitted against the lower edges of the sides of the yoke levers and having the said openings 37 for the pivots 35. The pivots are detachably secured within the openings of the plates or members 38, and are adapted to be removed to permit the lifting rods to be adjusted independently of one another. The lifting rods may be raised or lowered by the adjustable connections between their upper ends and the sides of the yoke levers, and by this construction the plow beams may be arranged at a uniform distance from th e' yoke levers, or they may be disposed at different elevations to suit the character of ground under cultivation.
The yoke levers, which are constructed substantially the same as those shown and described in the said patent, are fulcrumed on the front frame bar 19, and are secured in their adjustment by means of segmental racks 41 and spring actuated dogs or detents 42. The seat, 43 for the accommodation of the driver, is provided with a beam 44, fulcrumed at an intermediate point at 45 and connected by a transverse yoke 46 with the yoke levers, so that the weight of the driver will operate, as described in the said patent, to assist the adjustment of the plow beams.
The cultivator is provided with a draft equalizing device, constructed and operating substantially the same as that shown and described in the said patent, with the exception of the central and side guide sheaves or pulleys 47 and 48. The central guide sheave or pulley 47, which receives the flexible connection 49 of the central swingletree 50, is mounted between the vertical braces 22 on a suitable pivot, and the side sheaves or pulleys 48, which receive the flexible connections 51 of the side swingletrees 52, are mounted in brackets or casings 53, having bifurcated upper portions to receive the sheaves or pulleys 48, and provided with depending shanks or stems, having eyes 54, which are secured to the outer laterally extending pivots or pintles of the arches by set screws 55, or other suitable fastening devices.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isz- 1. In a cultivator, the combination of a frame, axles pivotally mounted on the frame at opposite sides thereof, a shiftablc bar extending across the frame and connected with the axles, a centrally arranged oscillatory lever mounted on the frame, and resilient means for connecting the lever with the shiftablc bar.
2. In a cultivator, the combination of a frame, pivotally mounted axles, a shiftable connection for the axles, a spring mounted on the shiftable connection, and an oscillatory lever connected with the spring for actuating the shift-able connection.
3. In a cultivator, the combination of a frame, pivot ally mounted axles, a shiftable connection for the axles, a curved spring secured at one end to the shiftable connection, and an oscillatory lever connected at the other end of the spring for actuating the shiftable connection.
4. In a cultivator, the combination of a frame, pivotally mounted axles, a shift-able connection for the axles, a spring secured at one end to the shiftable connection and extending upwardly therefrom and provided at its upper end with an eye, an oscillatory lover, a fastening device arranged in the .eye and securing the lever to the spring, and means for operating the lever.
5. In a cultivator, the combination of a frame, pivotally mounted axles, shiftable connections for the axles, an oscillatory substantially T-shaped lever having a central arm and opposite laterally extending arms, yieldable means connecting the central arm of the lever with the shiftable connection, and treadles connected with the laterally extending arms of the lever.
(i. In a cultivator, the combination of a frame having an axletree and provided with a front frame bar, crossed diagonally arranged braces connecting the axletree and the frame bar, a pendent bracket having sides secured to the said braces, a substantially T-shaped lever pivotally mounted on the bracket and having an upwardly extending central arm and laterally extending arms, axles pivot ally mounted on the frame, a shiftable connection for the axles, a'resilient device connecting the central arm of the lever with the shiftable connection, and treadles connccted with the laterally extending arms of the lever.
T. In a cultivator, the combination of a cultivating device, an operating lever carrying a bearing, a lifting rod having a threaded upper end, and a threaded eye receiving and engaging the threaded upper end of the lifting rod and provided with a pivot arranged in the said bearing.
8. 1n :1 cultivator, the combination of a cultivating device, an operating lever disposed longitudinally of the cnltivatorya lifting rod connected with the cultivating device and having a threaded portion, a plate rigidly mounted on the lever and having a transverse opening, and an interior-1y threaded eye receiving the threaded portion of. the lifting rod and provided with a pivot detachably secured in the opening of the said plate.
9. In a cultivator, the combination of a plurality of cultivating devices. operating levers disposed longitudi nally of the cultivator, plates rigidly secured to the side faces of the lever and extending below the same and provided with transverse bearing openings, cultivating devices, lifting rods connected with the cultivating devices and having threaded upper portions, adjustable members having threaded eyes to receive and engage the threaded portions of the lifting rods and providedwith transverse pivots arranged in the bearing openings of the said plates.
10. In a cultivator, the combination of a frame having a front transverse frame bar, arches secured to and depending from the frame bar and provided with laterally extending pivots, centrally arranged vertical braces de pending from the frame bar, a horizontal brace secured to the vertical braces and connected with the inner pivots of the arches, brackets mounted on the outer pivots of the arches, and a draft equalizing device having central and side pulleys, the central pulley being mounted between the said vertical braces, and the side pulleys being mounted in the said brackets.
11. In a cultivator, the combination of a frame having a front transverse frame bar, arches secured to and depending from the frame bar and provided with laterally extending pivots, centrally arranged vertical braces depending from the frame bar, a horizontal brace secured to the vertical braces and connected with the inner pivots of the arches, brackets having bifurcated upper portions and provided with depending eyes mounted on the outer pivots of the arches, and a draft equalizing device having central and side pulleys, the central pulley being mounted between the vertical braces, and the side pulleysbeing arranged between the bifurcated upper portions 'of the brackets.
