Be itknown that 1, JOHN G. SNYDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Altoona, in the county of Blair and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain I new and useful Improvements in Metallic Railway- Ties, of which the i1 )llowing'is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in metal rail- Way ties of that description which are made of sheet metal, and more particularly it relates to the clamping mechanism for securing the rail to the tie.
It has for its object the provision of means whereby the clamp can be readily adjusted to meet the rail after t the latter has been positioned and which will securely hold it in place.
The invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, such as will be hereinafter fully described, pointed'out in the appended claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings, in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts, Figure Us a perspective view of clamping mechanism embodying the invention, showing the same applied to the end of a tie to hold a section of rail to the same. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the end of the tie shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the end of a tie embodying a modification of the inven tion. The tie is of sheet metal and in its formation may be of any construction suitable in the premises. In the present instance it consists of the flat crown or top 1 and the sides 2 spreading apart slightly at their lower edges. These sides entering the material of the road-bed hold the tie againstdisplacement. The usual rail is secured on the crown of the tie by the clamps 3 on opposite sides of the rail and adjustably mounted on the tie. As both clamps are alike, a description of one will suffice for both.
Referring to, Figs 1., 2, 5 and 7, which Brownie preferred embodiment of the invention, the inner end of the clamp is shaped to fit the base and web of the rail and to al rut the crown of the same. In the outer end of the clamp, which is fiat and rests on the crown of the rail, is the groove 4 extending obliquely across the same. When the clamp is in place the bolt 5, mounted in the tie, passes 1h rough the groove 4. In the tie is the opening 6 to receivethe head of the bolt, and leading from the opening is the slot 7 into which the shankof the bolt is moved so that the head projects under the adjacent edges of the tie and holds the bolt in place. A nut on the upper end of the bolt serves to secure the clamp to the tie.
At the outer end of the clamp is the downwardly projecting flange 8 parallel with the groove 4. This flange engages the slot 9 in the crown of the tie, which slot is also parallel with the groove 4 when the clamp is in .place. The engagement of the flange with the slot serves to hold the clamp against the thrust of the rail. As the flange is shorter than the slot it can be moved endwise'therein, WhlClLWlll permit an oblique movement of the clamp on the tie. lique movement the clamp can be adjusted to the rail after thelatter has been positioned.
Projecting from the outer edge of the clamp, at one corner of the same, is the downwardly turned'finger 10 to engage the holes 11 in the tie. The holes 11 extend acrossthe crown of the tie in an oblique line parallel to the slot 9. When the finger is in engagement with any one of the holes the clamp will be held against sidewise movement. The interveningspaces.betwcenthe-liols are slight so that a very close adjustment of th clamp to the rail can be secured.

The engagement of the flange with the slot 9 holds the clamp against the thrust of the rail; and sidewise movement of the clamp is prevented by the engagement of the finger 10 with one of the holes 11. To adjust the clamp, the bolt 5 is.loosened and the outer end of the clamp is raised until the finger 10 is free. The clamp, with the flange 8 registering with the slot 9, is moved obliquely across the. tie until it reaches the required position relative to the rail. Then the outer end of the clamp is depressed to lie fiat on the top of the tie and the finger 10 engages one of the holes 11. The bolt 5 is then tightened, and the clamp secured in place.
In the modification shown in Figs. 3, 6 and 8, the tie and clamp have substantially the same structure, except that in the tie the holes 11" are recesses leading from the slot 9; and also the opening 6 for the bolt head opens into the slot 9". In the modification the finger 10 extends from the face of the flange 8 and projects horizontally into the recesses 11 when the clamp I and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
