To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KARL Dnnsz, a subject of the German Emperor, residing in 10 Mariahilfstrasse, Oologne, Prussia, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Filler Apparatus for Conveyers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof.
In filling from a chute the buckets of an endless conveyer it is important to prevent the spilling of the material through the spaces between successive buckets. It has been sought to accomplish this result by various means, as by bringing the edges of the buckets into close juxtaposition or by causing the edge of one bucket to overlap the edge of the next, but there are various objections to the use of such means. It has also been sought to accomplish the desired result by locating near the point of filling of the buckets cover plates which cover the spaces between adjacent buckets and are arranged to travel with the conveyer past the mouth of the filling chute.
It is to filler apparatus of the general type last mentioned that the present invention relates, and it is the object of the invention to provide improved means for covering the spaces between adjacent buckets while the buckets pass the space where the material is delivered to them.
In accordance with the invention there is provided a helical band of sheet metal of a pitch corresponding to the distance between centers of the buckets. Such helical band is mounted in the filling trough with its axis parallel with the direction of movement of the conveyer chain and is rotated so that during the passage of the buckets beneath the open bottom of the filling trough the spaces between adjacent buckets are continuously covered by the band. The material which is delivered by the chute upon the band also receive therefrom a rolling movement whereby the proper delivery of the material to the buckets and a uniform distribution thereof are secured.
The invention will be more fully explained hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which, for purposes of illustration of the nature of the invention, it is illustrated as embodied in a convenient and practical form.
In the drawingsFigure 1 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in longitudinal section of so much of a bucket conveyer with the improved filling apparatus applied thereto as is necessary to enable the invention to be understood. Fig. 2 is a top view of the chute, trough and buckets with the helical band in horizontal section. Fig. 3 is a view partly in end elevation as seen from the right hand in Fig. l'and partly in transverse section. Fig. 4 is a view in end elevation as seen from the left hand in Fig. 1.
The conveyer is shown as of ordinary construction, comprising buckets a, transverse shafts b, carrying wheels 0 and links d by which the buckets, shafts and carrying wheels are united in an endless chain.
Parallel with the rails c, at the point where the buckets are to be filled, are rails 6 upon which is mounted, through carrying wheels e, a movable frame f which supports the filling trough, chute and helical guard band as hereinafter described. The frame f is also provided with an arm or arms f extended to positions near the rails e and provided with a suitable locking device, such as a pin shown at f cooperating with the rail 0, for the purpose of retaining the movable frame in adj usted position.
Supported by the frame f is a filling trough g, preferably substantially semi-cylindrical and provided in its bottom with a longitudinal opening 9 which is preferably somewhat narrower than the buckets. The chute or hopper h, provided, if desired, with an adjustable gate it, may be arranged to deliver the material into the trough g, being also mounted on the movable frame f. Mounted in suitable bearings in the frame f, concentric with the trough g, is a shaft t' which, by means of arms 11, supports a helical band of sheet metal k which fits freely within the trough g, the pitch of the helix corresponding to the distance between centers of the successive buckets a and the width of the band being sufficient to cover the space between successive buckets, so that as the buckets travel beneath the trough and the helical guard is at the same time rotated upon its axis at a corresponding speed, the spaces between the buckets which at the time are passing beneath the trough are covered by the band. The helix has preferably a little more than two complete turns and the leading end of the band is preferably disposed beyond the transverse plane of the extended end of the chute or hopper h.
Any convenient means may be employed for rotating the helical guard in synchronism with the movement of the buckets. As shown in the drawings there is mounted in the frame f a transverse shaft Z which carries notched disks Z adapted to be engaged and rotated by the carrier wheels 0 of the conveyer chain, as the conveyer moves. Gears Z on the shaft Z mesh with gears m on a counter shaft m which also carries a bevel gear m in mesh with a bevel gear t on the shaft i of the helical band. By these means, the gears being properly proportioned, the helical guard receives the proper speed of rotation so that the spaces between the buckets which are passing beneath the filling trough are constantly covered by the guard.
If it is desired to shift the position of the filling trough and its appurtenances, the crank 71 can be applied to the shaft 41 to rotate'the same so that through the described gears and notched disks Z and the engagement of the latter with the then stationary conveyor chain, the frame f and all the parts carried by it can be shifted along the rails e to any point desired.
In the operation of the improved apparatus it will be observed not only that the spaces between the buckets which are passing beneath the filling trough are at all times covered by the helical guard band, but such guard band imparts to the material in the trough a rolling movement which progresses with the buckets thereby facilitating and making more uniform the filling of the buckets. Should large pieces of material be delivered into the filling trough they will be lifted by the arms 1" as they rotate and then dropped, being thereby broken up, and even if such large pieces escape being lifted or broken they will be carried off readily through the open end of the trough and discharged upon a bucket. There can be no jamming of pieces of material for all material which is not discharged into the buckets at the outsot will pass freely over the tail end of the helical guard. The flow of material into the trough g is preferably regulated by the gate h so that it shall all be disposed in the buckets by the helical guard Without accumulating at the end of the trough,
It will be understood that various changes in details of construction and arrangement can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim as my invention:
1. The combination with a conveyor and a delivery chute, of a helical guard band rotating upon a longitudinal axis parallel with the direction of movement of the conveyor and distributing to the conveyor the material delivcrcd by the chute.
2. The combination with a conveyor consisting of an endless chain of buckets and a delivery chute, of a helical guard band rotating upon a longitudinal axis and distributing to the conveyor the material delivered by the chute, the, pitch of the helix corresponding to the distance between centers of the buckets and the speed of rotation of 1 the helix corresponding to the speed of movement of the conveyor, whereby the helical guard band covers the spaces between successive buckets of the conveyor.
3. The combination with a conveyor, of a filling trough having a longitudinal opening in its bottom and a helical guard band rotating within the delivery trough and dis tributing to the conveyor the material in the trough.
4. The combination with a conveyor comprising an endless chain of buckets, of a filling trough having a longitudinal opening in its bottom and a helical guard band rotating in said trough, the pitch of the helix corresponding to the distance between centers of the buckets and the speed of rotation of the helix corresponding to the speed of movement of the conveyor.
5. The combination with a bucket conveyor, of a doliv-e cry trough having a longitudinal opening in its bottom, a helical guard band rotating in said trough, the pitch of the helix corresponding to the distance between centers of the buckets, and gearing between the conveyor and the helical guard band to rotate the latter.
6. The combination with a bucket conveyor, ot a filling trough having a longitudinal opening in its bottom, a helical guard hand rotating in said trough, the pitch of the helix corresponding to the distance between centers of the buckets, notched disks engaging the conveyor and trans mitting gearing between said disks and the helical guard band.
7. The combination with a bucket conveyor, of a frame mounted over the conveyor, a filling trough supported by the frame and having a longitudinal opening in its bottom, a helical guard band mounted to rotate in said frame within said trough, rails upon which said frame is movably mounted and transmitting gearing between the con veyer and the helical guard band.
8. The combination with a bucket conveyor, of a frame mounted over the conveyor, a filling trough supported by the frame and having a longitudinal opening in its bottom, a helical guard band mounted in hearings in the frame to rotate within said trough, a delivery chute supported by the frame, rails upon which said frame is mounted movably, transmitting gearing between the conveyor and the helical guard band, and means to lock the frame against movement.
