PLANING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 16, 1907.
Application filed January 25, 1907. Serial No. 354,109.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILHELM HOLTHAUS, a subject of the German Emperor, and a resident of Miilheim-on-the- Ruhr, Germany, have invented new and useful Improvements in Planing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in planing machines and more particularly in such machines in which the lips fixed to the inner adjacent ends of the beds of the machine are provided with notches for decreasing the buzzing noise caused by the machine when in work.
The improvements consist in that into some of these notches ledges are inserted in such a manner that they do not prevent the two beds with the lips from being approached to or removed from one another. The object of these ledges is to provide a support for the material to be worked especially in such cases when the two beds are very far drawn out and small pieces are to be worked. By this support not only hitherto occurring damages to persons attending to the machine are avoidinserted in the notches of the lips; and Fig. 3 is a section on the line 11-1) of Fig. 2.
Into some of the notches of the lips l and 2 ledges 3 connecting these lips, are slidably inserted so as to be with their top level with the top of the lips. The edges of the notches in which the ledges 3 are inserted, are oblique. The slidable ledges 3 are held by means of screws 4 which are passed through lashes or washers 5 catching below the ledges 3, so that the latter do not prevent the lips 1 and 2 from being approached to or removed from one another when necessary.
Having fully described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A planing machine, comprising in combination the beds, lips (1, 2) fixed on the adjacent inner ends of said beds and provided with notches having oblique e( ges and designed to decrease the buzzing noise of the machine, ledges (3) slidably inserted in some of said notches and designed to serve as support especially for small pieces of material to be worked when the lips are very far drawn out, screws (-l) passed through said ledges, and washers (5) disposed below said lodges and designed to allow said screws to hold said ledges slidably in said notches, substantially as described and shown.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
\VILHELM IIOLTIIAUS.
