To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK Earn, a citizen oi the United States, and a resident of Binghanuon, county of Broome, State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Resetting Mechanism lor Indicating-Wheels, of which the iollowing is a specification.
My invention relates to resetting mechanism for in dicating wheels. In the accompanying drawings it is shown as embodied-in an adding machine. While my invention is particularly applicable to such machines its use is not limited to them but is applicable to any machine in which it becomes necessary to reset wheels at a normal position after they have been moved therefrom. I
The object of my invention is to provide simple and easily operated means for resetting wheels at their normal position, means that will be accurate and certain in operation and that cannot be easily deranged. In
my improved devices the resetting medhan' mally not in engagement with the devices it i at the proper time it is moved into the path i'OiLlbiilll of such parts or connections thereof and moved concentrically alon said path.
in the drawings accompanying this specili ation and forming a part hereof I have shown the preferred form or embodiment of my invention it is there shown in connection with 'the adding wheels of an adding ma chine. It is, however, not restricted to use in such 130 machines but may be used in connection with any wheel or Wheels that have to be reset to a normal or original position.
Referring to the specific form shown in the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of an adding machine c n- 3 taining my invention, a part of the side casing being broken away to show the handle and connections; Fig 2 is a View of the same machine from the opposite side with a part of the casing similarly broken away; Figs. 3, 4 and 5 are diagrammatic views showing the reset {1'0 mechanism in three different positions, and Fig. (l is a rear view of the reset mechanism.
1 represents the case of an adding machine embodying my invention of which 2, 2 are the keys arranged lIL the ordinary manner. The machine shown is adapted to print upon any suitable recording surface the number represented by the keys depressed and also to add that number upon suitable adding wheels.
3 represents a type segment bearing type L. The machinc is equipped with one type segment for each series in the bank of keys although only one type segment and series of keys are shown in the drawings.
5, 5 are total adding wheels upon which the numbers represented by the keys depressed are added. The mechanism by which the keys operate the type rents to bring the proper numbers upon the printing line iorni no part of this invention and are, there iorc, not shown and dose 'ibed. Any suitable connecting mechanism may be employed for the purpose. The type segments 3 communicate their movement through segmental goe s G forming part of segment 3 meshing with illiCi'IllOilllLiE) adding Wheels 7 loosely mounted on shalt 8 and meshing with gear wheels 9 which are secured to total adding wheels 5. The total adding wheels 5 and their gears 9 are loosely mounted on shaft 10. In the iorni of machine shown in the drawings the type segments (5 are loosely inounted on a shaft 31 movably supported by two rocking arms 2, only one of which is shown in the drawings. These arms are inst upon rock shalt-13. After the keys 2 have been depressed the operator pulls forward the operating handle 14 which is then returned to place by any suitable means. The movement of this handle 14 operates the different parts of the machine causing the movement oi the type segments in pro orlion to the value of their respective keys that have been depressed and performing the other acts required in the operation oi the machine. As these form no part of the present invention none of them are shown and described. Among the said operations resulting from the moveinhnt of the operating handle 34 is the rocking oi rockshait 13 to the right as viewed in Fig. 2, bringing the gear 6 into mesh with the teeth of the adding wheels '1'. This is arranged to take place on the very beginning oi the operation of the machine and "oeicre the type segments 3 begin their retrograde or adding movement. The means for reckin shaft 13 iuliii no port 01' the invention and are not shown in detail and will not be further described. The movement of the type segments 3 accordingly moves the adding wheels 7 in proportion to the value of the keys that have been depressed and this movement is trans mittcd to -'the total adding wheels 5. The different numbers thus representedby the different keys depressed in siv-ctssive operations of the machine will be added during those operations upon the adding wheels 6, the number standing upon the reading or p'rinti l line of these wheels at any time representing the total l allot the additions i pto that point. My improvement relates to the resetting of such adding Wheels or Him' 3 devices at their original or zero positions. My resetting device is arranged-t0 be normally out oi the path of the adding wheel or other wheel and upon the commencement of the resetting operation it is first moved into such path and then ircuin ere Hilly along the path.
