SWITCH-CLIP.

Specication of Letters Patent.

To all whom it Imay concern: l
Be it known that I, GILBERT WRIGHT, a citizen o the United States, residing at Pittsiield, in the county of Berkshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful improvementsA in Switch- Clips, oi' wh ich the following is a specification.
This invention relates to electric switches and has for its objectthe provision of s device of this character which is cheap and simple but at the same time` is thoroughly reliable, safejand durable.
My invention has to do more particularly with that part of the sivitchiamili rly known, especially in connection with lever switches, as the switch clip and iti\is the further object of my invention, therefore, to
' reduce a switcl'r-cli of such im roved structure thatl the number or" operations required in its construction are reduced to a .ininixnurm the operations requiring no complicated machinery and but a very small amount of hand labor in their performance.
The further objects of my invention and the advantages thereof will be made to appear in the course of the following specification, while the invention itself and the scope thereof will be set forth in the claims annexed to and forming a part of this application.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved switch-clip showing the switch-blade in section; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the sanne; Fig. 3 is a section through the clip taken on line 3 3 oi Fig. l; Fig. 4 shows a modified form of my invention; Fig. 5 is a sectional View taken on line 5 5 Vof Fig. 4; and Fig.
i G is a sectional view taken on line 6 6 of Fig. 5.
Referring to Figs. l to 3, the clip consists or' two siniilar opposed members l l and a foot piece 2 which holds.
the members together. Each member .l is stamped from sheet copper into the'shape shown, having an offset portion 3 and a tlanged end 4. The abutting face of the member `also has a depression 3 stamped therein and providedv with a thread 1i which is formed during the stamping or pressing' operation by means of a threaded studinserted in The die. The base 2 is a separate stamping, having lugs 5 6 turnedup from the dotted position, shown, to retain the fasteningfor the lend wire or fuse. The hub 7 is punched 'down Aduring the operation and is afterwards tapped for a 'binding screw. in asscmbling'this clip, the lugsor projections S are turned up over the iianges 4 and when the screw, which is to secure the clip to the base, is inserted through-the base and into the threaded hole in the clip, the two members and the base are securely locked and the downward pull of the screw will draw the two clips together. I
This form oi clip can be made with a very slight amount of waste stock, the clip members being formed of strip copper with no waste 'whatevem whiie the amount of stock cut out from the base is very slight. With the exception of the one hole tapped for the lead screw all the operations on the parts are performed in the press and are, therefore, very economical from the labor standpoint.
In Figs. 4 to 6, l have shown a modified forro.y In this construction the clip 'members are formed inline same way with offset portions with screw-threaded te pression and flanged ends. rihe foot piece 9, however, is integral with the clip members which'are held together by means of rivets l@ and the retaining.,T collar 11, which is placed in the die before punching' and the metal forced into it to form the hub l2 for a terminal screw. The collar serves to hold the two halves oi the entended'oot together and prevents spreading when the screw is inserted. The hole in this hub is tapped after punching. A buffer or stop llfor the blade 1.4 is
made of a piece of iron, as shown, with the end reduced to Vform a shoulder which abuts against the shoulder of the clip members. The hole 'rler this stop is formed in each member during the first operation. Y What I claim new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the nited States, is,
- l. A swltchazlip comprising nbntting'ilates havingotset portions und provided with a threaded opening, a portion of which is formed ln euch plate.
2. A switch-clip composed of abutting plates havin.;- oflset nortions and flanged mses'zlnd provided with a threaded opening, a portion of which is formed in each plate.
.'S. A switch-clip composed of two similar opposing rncrn hers each formell from a single plato and havin;r ,an offset portion. and an abutting,Y ,face provided with a screwthreaded depression.
4. A switcli-clip haring.a'thrcaded opening for :i con tact screw, said clip' comprising abutting plates having offset portions and hanged bases, andia retainingr member ong'ngingsaid bases to holdthem together.l n yportion' or said threaded opcninghclng formed ineach plate.
5. A switch-clip comprisingnlnz-tting an offset portion and a hanged end, and a terminal sunportlng foot piece having portions engaging said flanged ends and bcnt to hold snld plates together.'
l. A srvltclrclip having an opening for a contact termnah' said clip comprising simili'r nbutting plates encli having n hanged brise and a depresslon in the abutting face to forni said opening, and n footvpiece engaging snld flanged ends to hold them together.l
a T. A switchclipcomprising two similar abuttingmernbers, each formed from'a single plate and having an oliset` .portiera u-tlanged end und n screw-thrcznled depressionin the alnitting,- face, and. a' foot piece having portions en- I gag-lng said flanged ends to hold them together.
In witness whereof, Ihave 'hereunto set my hand this'v 14th day ol .lu-ne, 1905.
