By reason oi the V-shaped or angular contact produced by causing the wedge shaped roller to run or revolve in a corresponding wedge shaped groove, I obtain all the advantages of the ilat roller, namely, good wearing qualities, freedom from uneven and excessive side strains, as Well as a large amount of contact surface. By means of the wedging action of the roller, I climinate the tendency ol' the roller to jump, in case either of the rings or the roller itself should become roughe'ned.
As the angle of the beveled laces is such that there is at all times a certain amount of slippage at the points of contact, the device has all the advantages o tht wipe contact system, namely a tendency to continually keep the contact surfaces clean whereby the best results are produced. The pressureobtained at the points of contactwill be `greatly in excess of the pressure applied to the contactI roller by means of the spring provided for that purpose, hence I obtain a irmer, stronger, thrust; or pressure directly at the points of contact with less strain, and consequently, less wear on the balance of the device than it is Otherwise possible to obtain.
The essential features ot my device are-(l) an angular contact between the roller and V-shaped groove or furrow, the roller having a continuous rolling 4movement; vand (2) an angular contact between the roller and V-shaped groove or channel in combination with the ground connection, allowing the current to pass from a contact point .or segment through the roller" and thence into ground ring and from there into the `ground wire, avoiding much loss of current from passing the same through numerous greasy joints, bearings, etc.
With my idea of a direct circulation and'ground connection the electric current is passed directly from the wire to the insulated contact point, then onto the roller or other contact. point, and trom thereon. to the ground ring, block, or other device, as the case maybe,
'and thence on to the ground wire attached thereto.
This makes it possible to have everyi joint clean and with the exception of the points of contact, soldered, if so desired.
By means of this system it ispossible to attain the maximum results with a minimum amount oi current (electric), while in a case where batteries arc used, it is feasible to use the electric current alter a. much lower voltage is reached, than would be possible under any other circumstamfcs. f
