To all 'whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE L. CARTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Yellow Springs, in the county of Greene and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wire-Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wire clamps for insulators and the like, the object of the invention being to provide a simple device for securely clamping and holding wires upon insulators, whereby valuable time. is saved in fastening and unfastening telegraph, telephone and electric Wires.
With the above and other objects in view, the nature of which will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of an insulator with the wire clamp ap plied thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation thereof taken 'at right angles to Fig. 2. Fig, 4 is a plan view of the same with the clamp members omitted.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the body of the insulator shown provided with the usual threaded socket 2 adapting the same to be secured to the crossarm of a pole or any other suitable support.
In carrying out the present invention, the body of the insulator is provided around its outer side with an annular groove 3 in which is received a collar 4 which is split at one side, as shown at 5, and provided with parallel ears 6 through which passes a clamping device 7 in the form of a bolt or screw or its equivalent, whereby the split collar as a whole is clamped securely around the body of the insulator. Under the pro ferrcd embodiment of this invention, the depth of the groove 3 is equal to the thickness of the collar 4 so that saidcollar lies flush with the outer surface of the insulator, as clearly indicated in Figs. 1 and 3.
The body of the insulator is also rabbeted or recessed, as shown at 8, from the groove 3 upward to receive lugs 9 extending upward from the split collar 4, which lugs are provided with notches 1.0 of several sizes to receive wires of corresponding variation in size, such wires being shown at 11 in Fig. 2 as being of different sizes. The top of the insulator body is also provided with a diametrical recess 12 through which the wire or wires extend and the opposite Walls of said recess are notched, as shown at 13 and 14, and for a purpose which will hereinafter appear. The
split collar 4, together with the notched lugs 9 thereof, constitutes the stationary member of the clamp.
The movable clamp member embodies a head or open center frame 15 having an elbow extension 16 at one side thereof which is pivotally connected at 17 to a lug 18 on the collar 4, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Extending from the opposite side of the head or frame 15 is alever arm 19 provided with notches 20-to be engaged by a latch 21 which is pivotally connected to the split collar 4 at the point 22. Extending downward from the bottom of the head 15 are lugs 23 provided with notches 24 of different sizes to engage the wire or wires seated in the notches 10 of the split collar. When the movable clamp member is in its clamped position, as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the opposite side edges of the lugs 23 are received in the notches 13 and 14 at the top of the insulator and at opposite sides of the recess 12, thus preventing lateral movement of the movable clamp member when in its clamping position, and thereby removing strain from the pivot 17 by which the movable clamp member is connected to the stationary clamp member and to the insulator body. It will also be observed that the lugs 23 are located at a considerable distance from and between the lugs. 9 so as to partially crimp the wire or wires engaged between and held by the clamp members, thus reducing the liability of the wire or wires to slip between the clamp members. The lever arm 19 enables the required pressure to be brought to bear on the wire or wires to partially crimp the same and when said lever has been brought to the desired position, it is securely held by means of the latch 21 which engages with any one of the notches 20 in said lever arm. 1
It will be understood that the wire or wires are first passed through between the clamp members and stretched to the required degree before the latch 21 is engaged with the notches 20 in the lever arm 19.
I claim:
1. The combination with an insulator, of a wire clamp mounted thereon and embodying a stationary member in the form of a split collar embracing the insulator and a movable member connected to the stationary member and embodying a lever arm, means for fastening said lever arm, and overlapping notched lugs on the stationary and movable members of the clamp which are adapted to eu gage and crimp the wire, substantially as described.
2. The combination with an insulator, of a wire clamp mounted thereon and embodying a stationary member in the form of a split collar embracing the insulator, and a movable member pivotally connected to the stationary member and provided with a lever arm, a fastening device for engaging and holding the lever arm, the clamp members being each provided with oppositely arranged lugs having notches to receive the wire, said lugs being located at a distance from each other to provide for crimping the wire, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. The combination with an insulator having a wirereeeiving recess therein and provided with notches at one or both sides of said recess, of a wire clamp embodying a stationary member secured to the insulator, a. movable member mounted on the stationary member, means for securing the members together, and lugs on the movable member receivable in said notches in the insulator, substantially as and for the purpose described.
