HOLLOW STONE STRUCTURE.
APPLICATION EILED IEB. 1, 1901.
A TTUHNE YS NITEI) STATE-S PATENT OFFICE.
lla
ANDREW ANGELORO, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
HOLLOW STONE STRUCTURE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 2, 1907.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW ANGELono, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, (borough of the Bronx,) in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and us'eful 1mprovement in Hollow Stone Structures, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The purpose of the invention is to construct a rustic v stone structure in the form of a vase, urn or other hollow vessel, which vessel will have a facing of what is generally known as natural or Cobble stones, and to provide a means whereby the said cobble or natural stones Ayvill will be durably held in place no matter what design or pattern may be employed in the construction of the article.
Another purpose of the invention is to provide means for conducting gas or currents of electricity through the structure when needed, and to provide a durable, artistic receptacle which may contain earth and plants when desired.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts as will be hereinafter fully set forth and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a partof this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is an elevation partly in section of an urn constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of that member which constitutes the main portion oi the framework of the structure; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the framework; and Fig. 4 is a section taken practically on the line 4-4 of Fig. l, the handles being omitted.
A hollow column is employed as a central support for the structure. This column is provided with a series o leaves l0 produced by longitudinally slitting said column, as is shown at 10u in Fig. 2, the slits extending from the upper end to a predetermined point near the lower end, and these leaves 10 are carried outward from the column proper and arer given any desired formation, the formation of the leaves determining practically the general outline of the body of the strncture, since the leaves 10'are adapted as the main supports for the said body. l
The base 11 of the column A is preferably uncut or is plain, as is shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Horizontal wires 12 are strung along the shaped leaves 10, as is shown in Figs. 1 and 3, and these horizontal wires 12 are crossed by vertical wires 1,3.A As'stated, the outer face of the structure is made up of natural or Cobble stones 14, and these stones are forced through the meshes produced by the crossed wires 12 and 13 and are secured in position by a bed of cement 15, or other adhesive material.
In the construction of the article, the stones are preferably supported in a great measure by the crossed wires l2 and 13, which will yield to the inequalities of the stones 14 and will admit of different sizes being employed, in fact the wires l2 and 13 may be so strung as to accommodate any size of stone.
If handles are employed in the construction of the article, the foundation of the said handles consists of strips 16 of dat metal bent to the desired shape and anchored in the cement bed 15, or the said strips 16 may be attached to the bent leaves 10. Smaller stones 17 are laid along the strips 1G, being secured thereto by suitable beds of cement 18.
Ordinarily in the construction of an article of the character described, it is built up in a form from which it is not removed until the cement or other adhesive material has been properly dried. A tube 19 is carried up through the central portion ol the article and the said tube may be adapted as a conductor of gas, and a second tube 20 may be also provided and adapted as a conductor for electric wires. The body portion of the device is provided with a chamber 21 through` which th e tubes 19 and 20 pass, the said chamber being adapt ed to receive earth so that the urn or vase may be used as a receptacle for growing plants.
1t will be understood that the interstices between the stones at the outside are provided with a suitable filling 22 that may be of any desired character, and that I do not confine myself to any particular shape or any particular arrangement of the stones in the formation of the article.
In the smaller forms of vases, the wire may be omitted or a substitute may be employed, as may be found desirable.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent,-
1. A structure consisting of an urn, vase, or the like, having a central column provided with leaves extending therefrom, a cement bed laid upon the said leaves and stones supported partially by the leaves and by the said cement bed.
2. A v ase, urn or the like comprising a frame consisting of a central column slit to form a series of leaves, said leaves being carried from the said column and shaped, a
`reticulated material supported by the said leaves, stones partially supported by the said reticulated material, and a cement bed supported by said material and partially supporting the said stones.
3. A vase, urn or the like provided with a framework consisting of a central column having longitudinal slits therein forming a series of leaves,- which leaves are bent outward from the said column and are given any desired shapes, longitudinal and vertical wires supported by the said leaves, a bed of cement likewise supported by the said column and the said leaves, and stones located at the outside ot the structure, lying one in engagement with the other, partially supported by the said wire network and partially supported by the said bed of cement.
structure, a cement bed luid upon the said frmne, :1nd :1 10 plurality of individual objects exterior-ly supported by the frame and the cement bed.
In testimony whereof I have signed my nume lo this specification in the presence of two subscribing witness t,
ANDREW ANGELORO.
