To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. LEBER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Printing and Embossing Press, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a'new and useful improvement in printing press or the like and consists in providing a guard for the press so that when the two plates thereof are brought together for the purpose of forming the impression, the said plates will be sufliciently separated to prevent injury to the fingers and hands of the operator therebetween.

Figure 1 represents a perspective view of one of the plates of a press showing the separator or guard in proper position thereon. Fig. 2 represents a horizontal sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 represents a vertical sectional view of the two plates of a press showing the same in position for making the impression.

Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.

Referring to the drawings. In printing presess now in use upon the market, an impression or printing plate is mounted or connected with a plate of the press in such a manner that the face thereof is substantially in the same plane as the inner face of the said plate upon which it is supported, so that when the two plates of the press are brought together for the purpose of making the impression, there is substantially no space formed between the said plates. This is objectionable for the reason that the fingers and hands of the operators of the press are often caught between the plates and mashed, and my invention is designed to overcome this defect. In addition, I have shown a novel means for supporting the impression or printing plate,

whereby the same can be quickly and easily removed from the plate and placed in position and firmly held. While I have shown a construction for carrying out this invention, other arrangements may be made and other instrumentalities employed which will accomplish the same result and I do not therefore desire to be limited in every instance to the exact construction herein shown and described.

1 and 2 designate the plates of a press one of which, for example, 1 is adapted to carry the impression or printing plate. I have omitted for the sake of clearness the necessary operating parts of a press, as the same form no part of my invention, but it will be un-' derstood that I desire to employ any suitable means or devices for forming an operative device. Upon the inner face of the plate 1 are the lugs 3 forming guides for the separator. In the drawings they are shown as integral with the plate, although it will be evident that they may be connected therewith in any desired manner. It will be noted more especially from Fig. 3 that the inner face of these lugs are inclined as at 4.

5 designates the separator or guard which is suitably attached to the plate 1, in the present instance, by means of screws 6 for which suitable openings in the plate 1 are provided. v

7 designates inclined faces on the separator or guard 5 which are adapted to seat between the lugs 4 and the plate 1, in order that the guard will be properly situated I with respect to the plate 1 and the screw openings provided in the said guard will be situated in alinement with the screw openings in the plate 1. In the drawings, I have shown the faces 7 as being situated upon feet 8 on the guard 5 but the latter may be made of, any desired shape. At a desired point in the guard 5 I provide the screw openings 9 with the enlargements 10 for receiving the heads 11 of screws 12 which are adapted to pass from the rear face of the guards and engagewith the impression or printing plate 13, the latter being provided, in the present instance, with suitable openings in its rear face for the reception of these screws 12. It will be seen in this way that the impression or printing plate 13 can be quickly and easily removed and different sized plates may be connected with the guard 5 and that by reason of the screws or equivalents the impression or printing plates are firmly and securely held in position on the guard 5.

From the above it will be seen that when the plates 1 and 2 are brought together to make the impression they will assume the position seen in Fig. 3, that is, with a considerable space formed between the said plates 1 and 2, thus preventing the hand of the operator from being injured as so often occurs. At the same time .the impression is properly made and the impression or printing plate, as before stated, is not only firmly held but also can be removed and replaced as desired.

From the above it will be understood that the separator or guard serves as a mount or support for the impression plate and it will be noted that it projects beyond the plane of the inner wall of the plate so that the impression or printing plate is suitably situated with respect to the coacting plate of the press to form a proper impression.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

support for the printing plate projecting beyond the plane of the inner face of one of the plates to provide a space therebetween and means. for securing the printing plate therebetween.

3. In a printing and embossing press plates therefor, a separator suitably mounted upon one of said plates to provide a space therebetween, a printing plate, and means for connecting the said printing plate with said separator and engaging said printing plate from the rear.

4. In a printing and embossing press, plates therefor, a support for the printing plate projecting beyond the plane of the inner face of one of the plates to provide a space therebetween, means for securing the printing plate therebetween, and guides for said support.

5. In a printing and embossing press, plates therefor, a

support for the printing plate, projecting beyond the plane of the inner face of one of the plates to provide a space therehetween, means for securing the printing plate thereon, guides for said support and lugs on said plate serving as guides for said support.

6. In a printing and embossing press, plates therefor, a separator removably connected with one of said plates to provide a space therebetween, a printing plate and screws adapted to secure said printing plate to said separator, and passing from the rear of said separator tlieretlirmlgh.
