To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, BURTON W. SWEET, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Telephone Extension-Arm Appliances, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.

My invention relates to improvements in extensionarm telephones, and more particularly to the supporting means for the telephone at the end of such arm, present in a removable bracket-member for the telephone instrument.

In the many types of extension supports for telephones known to the prior art, the telephone is either rigidly fixed at the end of the arm, and may not be removed by the party for greater convenience in using the same; or else the telephone instrument is removably supported by means of a pivot, and, in consequence, is frequently displaced by accident, thereby subjecting the instrument to considerable liability of breakage or injury.

It has been my object to combine in my improved construction, the advantages of both of these types of telephone support, which I provide in a removable self-locking bracket-member and socket, respectively disposed upon the telephone instrument and at the end of the extension-arm.

My improvements will be more readily appreciated, together with the further features and advantages thereof, by making reference to the accompanying sheet of drawings, illustrating embodiments of my invention, wherein;

Figure I, is a side view of a portion of the pivoted extension-arm, and its supported telephone. Fig. II, is a top view of the end of said arm and the telephone. Figs. III and IV, are details showing respectively the telephone bracket and extension-arm socket. Fig. V, is a detail partially in section, showing the manner of releasing the telephone bracket from its receivingsocket; and, Fig. VI, illustrates the use of a plurality of such sockets, whereby the telephone may be angularly positioned with respect to the supporting extensionarm.

Throughout each of the sev'eral figures of the drawings, I have employed the same character of reference to indicate similar parts.

Referring first to Fig. I, it will be understood that a a are two pivoted members of an extension-arm,

the former of which may either be pivoted or rigidly sheet metal bracket-member d, comprising the two ears or lugs d screwed to either side of the telephone casing, and the spacing members a? rearwardly embraced between said ears. A slot (2 is provided, which is adapted to engage the pin b of the socket, while an exterior notch or recess (1 thereon similarly accommodates the pin b.

In Figs. I and II, the instrument is shown as supported from the receiving-socket, in position to be removed by the user after the manner indicated in Fig. V, which is accomplished merely by tilting the telephone instrument backward from its normal position of support, in order to disengage the recess d from its associated pin b whereupon the instrument is free to be removedfrom the extension-arm for the purposes of use, and may be readily replaced upon the socketed extension-arm when the conversation is completed.

Reference to the normal relation of the bracket and socket parts as indicated in Fig. I, will show that the weight of the telephone tends to lock it in place upon the extension-arm by reason of its over-weighted positioning, whereby the recess 03 engages the pin b and securely the mounts the instrument upon the extension-arm.

Under some circumstances, it is more convenient to use the extension-arm telephone without removing it from its socket, and accordingly, I may employ a plurality of such sockets angularly mounted at the end of said arm, whereby the telephone may be best disposed for the convenience of the user under these circumstances. One of these constructions is indicated in Fig. VI, which improvement combines all the advantages of the pivoted telephone instrument, and one securely held upon the extension-arm against displacement, since the telephone instrument may be disposed at the desired angle upon the extensionarm, and at the same time is not liable to be accidentally knocked or jarred from its support.

Having now described embodiments of my improvements, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, the following, together with the reversal of the socket and bracket members or their equivalents, as set forth with respect to the telephone and its supporting-arm 1. The combination with a telephone instrument and an extension-arm therefor, of a removable mounting appliance for the telephone, comprising separable co-acting bracket and socket members adapted to be secured rigidly to said telephone and to the extension-arm, and means associated therewith for normally locking said members together, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination with an extension-arm, of a telephone mounted thereon, and interposed bracket and socket members respectively associated with said parts; said members comprising slotted or recessed engaging parts in association with retaining pins or detents, whereby the telephone and extension-arm are normally secured together against accidental displacement of the former, substantially as set forth.

3. The combination with an extension-arm, of a sheetmetal socket secured at the end thereof, transverse pins or detents provided therein, a telephone instrument, and a slotted or recessed bracket secured thereto; the latter be ing adapted to engage the pins or detents within the socket and normally mount the telephone instrument against accidental displacement from the extension-arm, substantially as set forth.

4. The combination with a telephone instrument, of an extension-arm therefor, and mounting-members rigidly secured to each, comprising :1 sheet metal socket containing two displaced detents and a sheet metal bracket slotted and recessed respectively to engage said (letents, whereby the telephone instrument is normally secured :1 dental displacement from its supporting extension-arm, substantially as set forth.
