To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WARREN SWEET, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Wayne, in the county of Allen and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanical Movements, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to means for converting continuous rotary motion into alternating rotary motion or alternating longitudinal motion, and is especially adapted for use in operating washing machines, churns, ice-cream freezers, windmills, pumps, and any other machine in which such motions are desired.
The object of my invention is to provide a mechanical movement of improved construction and operation and it consists in the combination and arrangement of parts herein set forth and claimed.
In the drawings which serve to illustrate my invention: Figure l is a perspective view showing my mechanical movement applied to .a washing machine. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view of the sleeve, partly in section. Fig. 3 is a cross section of Fig. 2 on the line x-x. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the frame and shaft. Fig. 5 is a side view showing the position of the mechanism when the lid is raised. Fig. 6 is a sectional view showing themechanism in the same position. Fig. 7 is a top view of the device. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the conical roller bearing. Fig. 9 is a perspective view showing a modification of my mechanical movement as applied to a washing machine. Fig. 10 is a view showing the position of the modified mechanism when the lid of the machine is raised or in open position.
The preferable construction of my improved mechanism which I have illustrated as especially adapted for use in washing machines, is substantially as follows: A sleeve 1 having a double-faced rack 2 and a flaring guide-way 3 arranged longitudinally thereof upon one side, and having upon its opposite side a single-faced rack 4 comprising a row of segmental cogs arr. nged transversely upon the circular surface of said sleeve, is rotatably and slidably mounted upon a horizontal shaft 5 which is mounted in supporting arms 6 and 7 respectively of frames 8 and 9 respectively secured to the casing 10 and lid 11 respectively by suitable bolts 12. Frame 8 is provided with a bearing 13 in which driving shaft 14 is mounted. Said driving shaft is provided on its outer end with a crank-wheel 15 and on its inner end with a driving pinion 16 and conical roller bearing 17 which engage the double faced rack 2 and flaring guide-way 3 respectively, of sleeve 1. As the driving pinion 16 is passing over and around the ends of double-faced rack 2, conical roller bearing 17 engages guide-way 3 to hold said pinion in engagement with said rack and to guide it around the ends thereof. It is also adapted to engage base 25 of said double-faced rack when the pinion is in engagement with the lower' side of said rack, as shown in Fig. 1. It also serves at all times to prevent the rack teeth from engaging said pinion except upon the sides of its cogs, thus producing a regular and even movement of the mechanism. Frame 9 is provided with a bearing 18 which is adapted to fit into lid 11, and receive and support operating shaft 19 and driven pinion 20 which is fixed upon said opera-ting shaft. Frame 9 is also provided with a journal 21 which is adapted to have rotatably mounted thereon an intermediate gear 22 which engages single-faced rack 4 and is actuated thereby and which engages driven pinion 20 and imparts alternating rotary movement thereto in either direction, as desired. A shoulder 23 is preferably formed upon sleeve l to form a stop to limit the upward movement of the lid and furnish a bearing for the intermediate gear whereby the lid is held in elevated or open position, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6.
I The shaft 5 serves the double purpose of securing frames 8 and 9 together to form a hinge which takes the place of the ordinary hinges to connect the lid to the easing, and also as a journal for sleeve 1, thereby greatly reducing the number of parts as well as the number of fastenings required to secure the mechanism to the machine. The construction and arrangement as above set forth greatly reduces the amount of metal required for the operating mechanism. It will be observed that the lid may be raised at any point of contact between the single-faced rack and the intermediate gear, the cogs of the intermediate gear sliding in the circular grooves of the single-faced rack until they engage shoulder 23. The segmental cogs of the single-faced rack are adapted to constantly engage the teeth of the intermediate gear or driven pinion, as the case may be, as the sleeve is being given its rotary and longitudinal movements by engagement of the driving pinion with the double-faced rack.
The operation of my device as above described is extremely simple and will be readily understood.
To operate the machine apply hand or other power to the crank-wheel causing it to revolve continuously in either direction. Motion will thereby be imparted to sleeve 1 through driving pinion 16 which in turn will oscillate the intermediate gear 22 and communicate rotary reciprocating motion to driven pinion 20 and 0 erating shaft 19.
To open the machine simply raise the lid until intermediate gear 22 rests against shoulder 23 which supports and holds the lid in open position.
It will be apparent that my invention is capable of considerable modification n ithout material departure from the scope or spirit thereof, as for instance, the intermediate gear. and journal may be omitted and the ski Yen pinion brought into direct engagement with the single-faced rack as shown in Fig. 9 which illustrates a modified construction. When made in this way the frame in which the operating mechanism is mounted may be made of one part and the usual hinges 24 are used. The intermediate gear may be formed in the shape of a wheel instead of a segmental gear as shown. When it is desired to obtain alternating longitudinal movements the sleeve may be fixed to the shaft and the shaft slidably mounted; and alternating rotary movements may also if desired be obtained by fixing the sleeve to the shaft slidably mounted. For these reasons, I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise construction and arrangement as set forth, but
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patcut is:
1. A mechanical movement comprising a shaft suitably mounted, a rotatable sliding sleeve on said shaft having a doublefaced rack and guide-way upon one side to receive movement and a single-faced rack on its opposite side to impart movement.
2. A mechanical movement comprising a shaft, fixed bearings and movable hearings in which said shaft is mounted, a sleeve slidably and rotatably mounted on said shaft, means to impart movements to said sleeve, and means to communicate movement from said sleeve, substantially as set forth.
3. In a mechanical movement, a fixed frame, a movable frame, a shaft pivoted in said frames, a sleeve slidably and rotatably mounted on said shaft, means to impart movement to said sleeve, and means to communicate movement from said sleeve to an operating shaft.
4. In a mechanical movement, a fixed frame, a movable frame, a shaft pivoted in said frames, a sleeve slidably and rotatably mounted on said shaft, a double-faced rack on said sleeve, :1 driving pinion adapted to engage said rack, means to hold said pinion and rack in mesh to engage lirst one face of said rack and then the opposite face to produce alternating longitudinal movements of said sleeve.
5. In a mechanical movement, a fixed frame, a movable frame, a shaft pivoted in said frames, a sleeve slidably and rotatably mounted on said shaft, a double faced rack on said sleeve, a guideavay adjacent said rack on said sleeve, a driving shaft suitably mounted, a pinion on said driving shaft adapted to engage said double-faced rack, and a roller bearing on said driving shaft adapted to engage said guide-way to hold said rack and pinion in mesh.
(3. ln a mechanical movement, a fixed frame, a movable frame, a shaft pivoted in said frames, a sleeve slidably and rotatably mounted on said shaft, :1 double-faced rack on said sleeve, a flaring guide-way on said sleeve-extending around said rack, a driving shaft suitably mounted, a pinion on said driving shaft adapted to engage both faces of said double-faced rack, and a conical bearing on said shaft, adapted to engage said flaring guide-way and hold said pinion and rack in mesh.
7. In a mechanical movement, a fixed frame, a movable frame, a shaft pivoted in said frames, a sleeve slidably and rotatably mounted on said shaft, 3. double-faced rack arranged longitudinally on said sleeve, :1 guide-way on said sleeve extending around said rack, a driving shaft, a driving pinion on said driving shaft adapted to engage said rack, a bearing adapted to traverse said guide-way and hold said pinion and rack in mesh, 11 single-faced rack on the side opposite said double-faced rack, and a pinion in engagement therewith whereby reciprocating rotary movement is imparted thereto.

In a mechanical movement, a frame, a shaft mounted therein, a sleeve mounted on said shaft, :1 double-faced rack arranged longitudinally on said sleeve, a pinion adapted to engage said rack. and move said sleeve, a driven pinion and a single-faccd rack adapted to engage and move said driven pinion.

In a mechanical movement, a sleeve having a double-faced rack on one side, a guide-way formed around said rack and a single-faced rack on the opposite side comprising a row of segmental cogs arranged transversely upon the cylindrical surface of said sleeve, substantially as for the purposes set forth.
12. In a mechanical movement, a sleeve having a double-faced rack on one side, a guide-way formed around said rack. a single-faced rack on the opposite side comprising a row of segmental cogs arranged transversely upon the cylindrical surface of said sleeve and a shoulder adjacent the end of said cogs, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
13.
