Description

. PATENTED DEC. 9, 1851. E. RIPLEY & E. L. BRUND-AGE,
CAR SEAT.
UNITED STATES PATENT oEEIoE.
EZRA RIPLEY AND E. L. BRUNDAGE, OF TROY, NEW? YORK.
CAR-SEAT.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 8,588, dated December 9, 1851.
T 0 all whom it may concern 'Be it known that we, EZRA RIrLEr and EDWIN L. BRUNDAGE, of Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the ode of Reversing High- Back (or Night) Car-Seats; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure l is a perspective view of the seat, Fig. 2 an end view of the same, the back being in a horizontal position as in the act of reversing, and Fig. 8 is an end view, the back being in its position for use; in order to represent the fixtures beyond it, the arm is represented in out-line in red lines; the same letters having reference to like parts in all the figures.
The nature of our invention consists in the arrangement of the levers or arms on which the back is hung by a pivot to the back, which descends on the arms when reversing, and the back rests or catches upon the arms of the seat at the ends in a manner which shall secure a proper position and firmness to the back when placed either side of the seat which is given a rolling motion in the operation of reversing; the levers are made to descend through a revolving pivot roller or slot, which shall allow the back to fall upon said roller; and the lever shall draw up and hold the back in its proper position when either side of the seat; the effect being that both ends of the back will move alike and together, and
shall not raise and swing over in a circle in the usual manner of low backs.
The construction is as follows: The levers or the arms A A. are pivoted to the back at a, a, and are secured to the seat arms 13 B by pivot rollers C C through which but shall retain said bearings until the back shall be inclined forward so as that it shall fall upon the rollers at its center and resume its proper position in being raised to either side of the seat.
Having thus described the nature of our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement of the reversing arms A A pivoted midway the height (of and to the back), so as that they shall descend and slide through the pivot rollers so as that any required height of back may be reversed from one side of the seat to the other, in the manner and for the purpose substantially the same as described.
