Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 1a, 1907.
Application filed April 2,1906. Serial No. 309,403.
gan, have invented a new and useful Vehicle- Wheel, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to vehicle wheels, and has for its object to provide for cushion- I :0 ing the same in a new and novel manner without employi cushioned tir ie s.
It is also proposed to embody the invention in the nature of an attachment which may be readily applied b01311 ordinary wheel without making any material alteration therein, and which when applied, efiectually cushions the wheel at the hub so as to take up sudden shocks or jars.
With these and other objects in view, the 4 present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details may be made, within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the .ad-
vantages of the invention.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wheel equipped with the cushioning means ofthe present invention. Fig. 2 is a diametric sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary'perspective view of the cushioning attachment. v
Like characters of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawings.
The present attachment includes a broad rim 1, from the inner face ofwhich project radial hangers 2 which are slotted longitudinally and are preferably in the nature of U- shaped clips or loops. A helical sprin 3 has one terminal hooked to the adjacent anger and its other end hooked into a screw-eye 4 which completes the attachment.
The resent attachment may be applied to any ord' pneumatic or other forms of inary Wheel, such as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and including a hub 5 formed by a metallic disk having a concentric opening 6. Spokes 7 radiate from the hub and are set the s okes carr afe'll 8.
ln assemblin g ihe a tachment and the wheel, the hangers 2 are placed astraddle of the felly 8 and then brazed or otherwise rigidly connected to the rim 1 of the attachment. The screw-eyes 4 are then fitted into the threaded radial sockets 9 in the outer peripheral edge of the hub, after which the springs are hooked into thehangers and the screw-eyes, whereby the wheel proper will be concentrically hung within the rim 1, and the weight of the vehicle is hung from the upperset of springs in such a manner as to take up all shocks or jars to which the rim of the wheel may be subjected.
By preference, a tubular open ended hub box 10 is fitted in the hub opening 6 and proj ects at opposite sides of the hub so as to obtain an extended bearing on the axle, there being an annular flange or face plate 11 carried by an intermediate portion of the box and of a diameter to entirely cover the adjacent side of the hub. Another face plate 12 having a central opening 13 for the rece tion of the hub' box is fitted against t e other side of the hub, and the two plates are connected by means of bolts or other fastenings 14 which pierce the plates and thehub. These plates serve not onlyto hold the hub box in place, but also prevent edgewise displacement of the spokes from the hub and form a finish for the latter.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
1. A wheel comprising a hub, s okes, .a felly, a concentric rim spaced from t e felly, spaced loops carried by the rim and embracing the felly, and springs extending between the closed ends of the loops and the hub.
2. A wheel comprising a hub, afelly, a rim spaced from the felly, rigid spokes secured to the eripheral edge of the hub between the si e faces of the latter and connected with the felly, radially disposed loops secured to the rim between the rigid spokes into radial sockets therein, the outer ends of and embracing the telly, and springs ex- IOO eral edge of the hub between the side faces tween its side'faces, and s rings connecting and alternating with the spokes, afelly, arim the eyes and the closed en 5 of the adjacent spaced from the felly, slotted hangers earloops.
ried by the rim and embracing the telly, and 1n testimonythat I claim the foregoing as I 5 5 helical springs hooked into the eyes and conmy own, I have hereto aflixed my signature nectei with hihe hangers. hm f h 1 in-the presence of two Witnesses.
