A Be it known that I, WILLIAM RANDAL TUT- TLE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Asotin, in the county of Asotin and State of Washington, have invented a new and Improved Hydraulic Motor of which the following is a full, clear, and eXact description.
This invention relates to hydraulic motors, and it consists substantially in the details of construction and combination of parts hereinafter more particularly described and pointed out in the claims.
The invention has reference more especially to hydraulic motors of the kind actuated by the force of the current of a body or stream of water, upon the surface of which, the motor is locate when anchored in position for effective operation.
body or stream thereof on which the motor may be placed, either for mining or. irrigating purposes, and while I have erein represented my improvements in a certain preferred embodiment, it will be understood that I am not limited thereto in precise detail, since immaterial changes therein may be made, coming within the scope of my invention.
Reference being had to the drawing by the designating characters thereon, 1-1 and 1":-1n represent parallel side and end beams of the supporting frame of my improved motor, the same being disposed a suitable distance apart, and having secured to the lower edges thereof, any suitable number of boards 2, to constitute a boat or iioat. To the upper edges of the beams are secured boards'j furnishing a platform or closure for the boat.

A further object is to provide a hydraulic motor of the kind referred to, which is simple in construction and comparatively inex ensive to manufacture, besides being t oroughly effective and reliable for its purposes, and possessing the capacity for long and repeated service.
The above and additional objects are attained by means substantially such as are illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of a hydraulic Fig. 2 1s a section on the line 2`2 of Fig. l; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional detail of one of the paddles.
Before proceeding with a more detailed description, it may be stated that in the form of my im rovements herein shown, I employ a special y constructed supporting frame for the operating elements of my improved motor, said elements comprising a series of paddles of s ecial construction and organization, by whic to derive continuously, the maximum of surface for impingement thereagainst of the Water, by the force of the current of which the motor is actuated, thereby securing a motor having the maximum of efficiency, as will presently be explained.

The members 5 are braced to the frame by upwardly converging members 6`6 meeting above the platform. Each of the members 1 is slotted at its forward end and has a bracket 6a, supporting a block 7, having a screw threaded shank 8, eX- tending through a threaded opening therefor in the branch 9 of the bracket, and provided with an adjusting nut 10, said block supporting in an opening'therein, the spindle 11 having a sheave or pulley 12 at each end. At the opposite ends of the members 1-1 is supported the spindle 15 of sheaves or pulleys 16. At the meeting points of the members 5 and 6 are journaled the spindles 17 and 18 of sheaves or pulleys 19 and 20, respectively.' The shaft 16 has driving connection 21 with a pump 22, for instance, which is mounted at or near the center of the platform and is driven or motor.
Carried by each set of sheaves or pulleys 12, 16, 19 and 20, is an endless traveling chain 23, provided at the desired intervals thereof, With special links 24, integral With each of which is a clamp, comprising two plates 25, separated from each other by a space, and receiving therebetween, a ortion of a paddle 26, it being understood t at the said links 24 and integral clamps at the two sides of the motor, are disposed in sets, those of each set being directly op osite to each other, and each paddle 26 as associated operated by the operating pumps to draw water from the IOO IIO
-j acent surface therewith, one of the links 24, and clamps of each chain 23, which organization brings the paddles in parallelism, as will be apparent. The addles are secured between the plates- 25 ofp the clamps, by means of headed bolts 27, having fastening nuts 28 thereon, and in order to derive the maximum oi strength and resistance to the force of the current of water on which the motor may be placed, I employ braces for each paddle, near the ends thereof, said braces each comprising a rod 29 bent at the central portion thereof, to form a loop 30 for engaging with one of the links oi the chain, with which the brace is associated, the parallel members of said rod extending. rearwardly and downwardly of the motor, and having the terminal portions 3l4 thereof bent and entering grooves therefor in the adortions of the corresponding paddles 26, anld one of the lates 25 of the corresponding clamp referre to.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that in virtue of the downward and rearward inclination of the members 5, the paddles 26 are caused to pass beneath the surface of the water indicated by the broken lines 33, at successively increasing depths, thus continuously presenting portions of all the paddles beneath the surface of the water to the force of the current of the water, it being mentioned that in the present instance, the said force of the current of wateris in the di rection of the arrow a, or down-stream* wardly. The structure is exceedingly strong, besides being easily constructed and readily repaired when any of the parts thereof become broken.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
l. A hydraulic motor comprising endless traveling chains, links of which are provided with clamps, paddles carried 'by the clamps,
braces for the paddles having engagement with both. the clamps and the chains, and means whereby the paddles are caused to move at gradually increasing depths.
2. A hydraulic motor comprising endless traveling chains, links of which are provided. with clamps, paddles carried by the clamps, braces for the paddles having engagement with both the clamps and the chains, said braces being constructed of integral parallel members, and means whereby the paddles are caused to move at gradually increasing depths.
3. A hydraulic motor comprising endless traveling chains, links of which are provided with clamps, said clamps comprising parallel members, paddles received between the parallel members of the clamps, means for securing the clamps to the paddles, and braces for the addles, saidv braces com rising a member liaving one end inserted etween one of the parallel members of the clamp and the` paddle, and the other end connected with the chain.
4. A hydraulic motor, comprising endless traveling chains, links of which are provided with clamps, paddles carried by the clamps, and braces for the paddles having engagement with both the clamps and the chains.
5. A hydraulic motor, comprising endless traveling chains, links of which are provided with clamps, paddles carried by the clamps, and braces for the paddles having engagement with both the clamps and the chains, said braces being constructed of integral parallel members.
