A Specification of Letters Patent.

To 1J/Z whom it may con/cern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT J. NEVILLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nashville, in the county of Davidson and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Doors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to freight car doors, and more particularly to grain doors for freight cars, and its object is to provide a door construction which is particularly sirnview of one end of the door and the side of the car adjacent to the door opening with the operating mechanism for manipulating the door. f
In the exemplification of my invention disclosed in the accompanying drawings, a fragment of the side wall of the car is indicated by 1, the door opening in the side wall by 2, and the door for closing the opening by 3. Y
The door 3, vwhen in closed position, is intended to fit snugly within the opening 2, and is designed tobe slid to one side of the door opening for exposing the latter, and it is so mounted that in its initial opening movement it will be lshifted into a vertical plane outward and away from of the side of the car, so that in the final opening movement, in
which movement it is shifted laterally, in respect to the first named movement it does not contact with the side of the car. To obtain this action the door is supported in a frame 4 shiftable toward and from the side of the car by means to be hereinafter described.
The frame 4 preferably includes upper and lower horizontally-disposed bars 5, 6, constituting tracks along which the door 3 is movable, and end bars 7, 8, connecting the tracks 5, 6, and forming with the latter arectangular frame, which is secured to the side of the car by parallel links 9, 10, pivotally connected at their ends to said bars 7, 8, and the side of the car, respectively.
The means herein illustrated for shifting the frame 4 includes crank members 11, 12, coacting with the frame adjacent the corners thereof, an operating lever 13, and connections interposed between the latter and said members. The members 11, in the present exemplication of my invention, as double cranks, having one of' their crank arms slidably connected to the frame, and their other cranks connected to an operating rod or link. The cranks 12, which coact with the lower portion of the frame 4, constitute part of a shaft 14, suitably ournaled to the side of the car. The operating lever 13 is suitably journaled upon the side of the car, and its horizontal or pivotal portion is provided with two diametrically-opposed cranks 15, 16. The crank 16 is coupled by a link 17 to the adjacent crank 12, while the crank'15 is coupled by the link or rod hereinbefore referred to to the adjacent crank member 11. The other crank member 11 is connected to the other crank 12 by a rod or link 18, so that the two parts are coupled to move in unison.
The door 3 is arranged on the inner side of the frame 4, and is provided on its outer face with suitable brackets in which rollers 19 are journaled, which are designed to run upon the tracks 5, 6.
From the foregoing, it will be understood that upon shifting the lever 13 in one direction, the frame 4 will be shifted away from the side of the car, and in this movement the door 3 Will be moved out of the door opening 2 and into a vertical plane slightly in advance of the side of the car. The door may now be shifted laterally to uncover the door opening, andin this movement it does not come into contact with the side ofthe car. To close the opening 2 the door is brought .back into register with the door opening and the lever 18 given a reverse movement, which, through the mechanism described, will shift the frame 4 against the side of the car, and move the door into the opening 2.
'For the purpose of securely locking the door in closed position, a plurality of sliding bolts is provided, and means for simultaneously shifting the same from a common operating` lever. As shown herein, the bolts 2O are arranged in pairs, the members of which are located adjacent the opposite edges of the door, and are intended to be projected past said edges to engage registering parts arranged adjacent the e ges of the opening 2. shaft being provided with suitabie cranks connected to the bolts by links 23.
An opening 24 is preferably provided in the upper part of an elevator spout in loading the car with bulk grain. This openin T is intended to be closed by a slide 25 movable in channelways 26 secured to the door adjacent the upper and lower edges of the opening An opening 27 is provided in the door adj acent its lower edge through which the grain may be discharged ironi the car. This opening is closed by a gate 28 arranged on the inner side of the door 2 and connected by a link 29 to an operating handle 3() also located upon the inner side ot the door and to which access maybe had through the opening 24.
Means may be located upon the inside of the car for additionally retaining the door in place if desired, and in the present exemplification oi niy invention such rneans are shown as eyes 3l on the door 3 and hooks 32 pivotally mounted. at the side edges oi the opening 2 which are designed to engage said eyes.

The combination with the wall of a container as a car having a door opening and a door for closing the latter, of a rectangular frame carrying the door, links interposed between the same and the wall of the container, a crank shaft extending parallel with the lower bar of the iranie and provided adjacent to opposite ends with cranks enact-ing with opposite ends of' the fraine, a double crank journaled on the car adjacent to each of the upper ends of the frame, each having one of its cranks coacting with the iraine, a lever having rev ersely-arranged cranks, a link interposed between one of thelatterand a crank oi said crank shaft, a second link interposed between the other ot said reversely-arranged cranks and the second crank oi the adjacent double crank, and a link interposed between the second crank of the other double crank and the adjacent crank of said crank shaft.
