UNITED nn, unicor To will whom it may concern: 5 .B'eitiknownithat l, lVlLLIAM -'"acitizenot,:t'hellnijtcd States, residing St. IuOUlSfMlE SO UIl, have invented a ce tain new and. useful ln'lprovement in Bindingdh :O'iiflfllitllTt-lih following is a full, clear, and e);- 'actldescription}such as will enable oth skilled: in =theartitowhich it apnine to .makeland-use' the same, reference being h to the-acooni iianying drawings. forming o'lthisspecification, in which Figure .1 is a vertical sectional showing in v improved device mounted in a sup- 7 or-t'; Fig. 2 is an elevation of the device with all the parts thereofassembled; Fl 3 is a de tail perspective'view ol' the nieti 1 member which receives the binding screw; Fig. is a detail view of the metallic sleeve wl'iich. sure rounds the block olinsulating material; l 5 is a vertical sectional view ol modified form of my invention in which the metallic member is provided with screw threa ed shank on which. a binding post is moun d; and Fig. 6 is a detail view of the nietalic member.
This invention relates to terminal studs for electrical apparatus, and consists, broadly stated, of a metallic member adapted to receive a binding screw, or having threaded shank formed integral there. receive a binding post, and being embedded. in a block of insulating material which is permanently secured to an externally screwthreaded metallic sleeve.
The main. object of my invention t prd 'vide a device in which none of the parts can Work loose and which is notliable to turn or work out of the support to which it. is connected.
Another object of my invention. is to provide a device that presents a neat and orna mental appearance and. which is oi simple construction so that it can be manufactured at a small cost.
Referring to'Figs. 1 to l oi the dr which represent the preferred iornt ol K vention, 1 designates a non-circi-ilar metallic member'preferably of hexagon. l shape provided with an internally screw eaded btnc that receives the binding screw h r end of said member having a tubuu extension 3 into which one of the ccnnu ting wires 4 extends and is soldered. Application filed January 9, 1907. Serial No. 361,527.
her l embedded in a block 5 of insulating material, pre 'erably hard rubber, and said block is arranged inside of an externally screw-threaded metallic sleeve 6 to which it p is permancnelv connected preferably by l? olding the insulating material inside of the eve and around the metallic member 1, the sleeve 6 heing preferably provided with notches 6" in its upper edge so as to connect it more securely to the block 5.
The block is provided at its upper end with ahead or enlarged portion 7 having a milled or corrugated periphery which enables the de -rice to be screwed into the support 8 to whic i it is connected the underneath side of the head contacting with the upper face of the support, as shown in Fig. 1. The memher 1 is provided at its upper end with a ciriace cl said block so that a very neat and or' nil-mental cimstruction is produced.
it is impossible for'the metallic member to turn in the block 5 on account of its noncircular shape, and the screw threads on the exterior of the sleeve 6 to prevent the device i'rom turning in die support in which it is mounted, the opening. in. the support into which the device is screwed being preferably coated with ceneu "or some adhesive.
. Consequently, none of the parts of the device can work loose and the device itself cannot appearance and as it is of very simple construction it can be n'ianufactured at a small cost.
Having thus described my invention, what 2. A device of the character describedcomprising a central metallic member adapted to receive a binding device. and provided at its lower end with a reduced tubularshaped portion and at its upper end with a collar, and a block of insulating material in which said member is embedded, the top face of said block being flush with the shoulder prodncedby forming the collar on the upper end of said member and the tubular-shaped portion at the lower end of said member projecting beyond the bottom face of said block; substantially as described.
3; A device of the character described comprising a central metallic member proat its lower end to receive a conducting wire,
a block of insulating material surrounding said member and provided at its upper end with an enlarged portion, and an externally screw threaded sleeve surrounding the lower portion of said block; substantially as described. Y
4. A device of the character described comprising a non-circular member adapted to receive a binding screw,. a block of insulating material surrounding said member and provided with an enlarged head, a tubularsha-ped portion on the lower end of said member which projects beyond the bottom face of said-block and is adapted to receive a conducting wire, a circular collar on'the upper end of" said member projecting beyond the top face of the block, a washer surrounding said collar, and an externally screw-threaded sleeve surrounding the lower portion of said block; substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses, this fifth day of January 1907.
WILLIAM. G. WINTER.
