Description

No. 857,093. PATENTED JUNE 18, 1907. H. B. MYERS. RAILROAD CATTLE GUARD.
APPLICATION FILED FEB. 28, 1907.

RAILROAD CATTLE-GUARD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 18, 1907.
Application filed February 28, 1907. Serial No- 359,803.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY B. MYERs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marshfield, in the county of WVebster and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railroad Cattle-Guards, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in railroad cattle guards.
The object of my invention is to provide a railroad cattle guard which is economical in its construction and which is ellicient and durable.
The novel features of my invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings illustrative of my inventionFigure 1 is a vertical cross section taken on the dotted line (ib of Fig. 3. Fig. 2 is a top view of the cattle guard. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view taken on the dotted line cd of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view of one of the cattle guard members and a portion of one of the ties, taken on the dotted line ef of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4, taken, however, on the dotted line g7i of Fig. 3.
Similar numerals of reference denote similar parts.
1 and 2 denote respectively the rails and ties. Mounted on the upper side of the ties 2, and preferably at both sides of each rail 1, are a plurality of horizontal parallel substantially V shaped metal plates 3, the upper edges of each of which are provided with serrations 4. The ends of each plate 3 are ilattened so as to firmly support the plate. Intermediate and opposite portions of each plate have downwardly turned projections 5 adapted to rest upon the upper side of the tie, and which furnish lateral supports to prevent side tipping of the plate. Each plate is pro vided in its bottom portion adjacent its ends and in its middle portion with longitudinal slots 6, in which are mounted securing devices, such as the ordinary spikes 7, which are driven into the ties 2. By providing the longitudinal slots 6 the plates 3 may be adj usted transversely on the ties 2, to positions in which the spikes passing through the slots will enter the ties, even where the ties are not disposed at regular distances apart.
The plates 3 are preferably of galvanized sheet steel.
My invention may be modified in different ways within the scope of the appended claims without departing from its spirit.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A cattle guard, comprising a plurality of substantially V shaped parallel metal plates, adapted to be secured transversely to the railroad ties, and having serrated upper edges, the ends of each of said plates being flattened and opposite intermediate portions of each plate being dmvnwardly turned, thus serving as lateral supports.
2. In a cattle guard, the combination with the railroad ties, of a plurality of parallel substantially V shaped plates mounted upon said ties and having serrated upper edges, each of said plates being longitudinally adjustable on said ties.
3. A cattle guard member, comprising a substantially V shaped plate having flattened ends and opposite intermediate portions being downwardly turned so as to furnish lateral supports for said plate.
4. A cattle guard member comprising a substantially V shaped plate having flattened. ends, the upper edges of the V shaped portion being serrated and the plate being adjustable lengthwise on the railroad ties.
5. In a railroad cattle guard, the combination with the railroad ties, of a plurality of parallel, substantially V shaped plates having flattened ends and intermediate opposite portions downwardly turned to serve as lateral supports, the upper edges of the V shaped portion of each plate being serrated, and each plate having a plurality of longitudinal slots, and securing devices extending through said slots and into said ties.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in presence of two subscribing w tnesses.
HENRY B. MYERS.
