- To all whom it may concern.-

Loudres, in the said city, have invented certam new and useful Improvements in Fare.v
Indicators, of which the following is a speci fication. Y
' This invention has for its object to provide in fare indicators for vehicles and'especially for motor cars, a device indicating the time during which the vehicle is kept at a standstill due to'breakdown, or accident, or other cause which occupies time which should not be charged for (which I will refer to as breakdown) and to suspend for such time the operation of the-fare indicator. whereas the toothed wheel 1 and pinion 3 are in gear only while the vehicle is running under normal working conditions, but are adapted to be thrown out of gear with each other by shifting the lever 5. A spring 7 tends to keep the lever normally in such position that the pinions 3 and 1 will gear with each other.
A lever 8 is capable of turning on an arbor 9 to which a pinion 10 is secured, the said lever 8 carries the arbor ll-for a piniony12, which is'constantly in gear with the pinion 10 and capable of being, by theoperation of the lever 8 thrown into gear with the toothed wheel 1 of theclock mechanisnuor disengaged therefrom. A spring 13 tends to return the lever 8 to the position in which the pinion 12 and toothed wheel 1 are in gear.
The pinion 10 is provided with a pin 14 which, at each revolution of the said pinion strikes against, and raises, the lever 15 operating the totalizing device 16, the indications of which can be read through the opening 17. A spring 18 returns the lever 15 to its normal position. 1

cam 20 which acts on a projection 21 of a le I ver 22. The latter is pivotally connected to a bracket 23 secured to a fixed part of the apparatus, by way of example, to the casing 24 of the clock mechanism. -On each revolution of the cam 20 the lever 22.is oscillated, then returned to its normalposition through the medium of a spring 25, which has one end connected to the lever 22 and its other end to the casing 24. To prevent the projection 21 striking against the cam 20 a stop 26 is provided which limits the return motion of the lever 22. Carried on the end of the lever 22 is a pivotally mounted pawl 27 to which is at tached one end of aspring 28, the other end of said spring 28 being attached to the lever 22. A guide 29 is provided for the pawl 27. The awl 27 is adapted toact on the ratchet whee -30 of the fare indicator 31, the indications being read through an aperture 32 formed in the wall 33 of the casing of the apparatus. 7
On the shaft 3 1 of the totalizing device 16 for breakdowns is keyed a ratchet wheel 35' against'which acts a pawl 36, the latter being capable of turning round its pivot in one direct-ion, but this movement-is arrested in the opposite direction through a pin 37 carried by the lever 15. A spring 38 connects the pawl 36 to the lever 15. From such c011 struotion it is evident that every time the pin le strikcs the lever 15 the pawl 36 shifts the ratchet wheel which imparts a corresponding movement to the totalizing device 16.
On the end of the lever 8 a link 39 is pivotally connected, and to the said link a crank The crank 40 is drum 4-1 is actuated and the word breakdown appears 1n the aperture 42 formed in the wall 33 of the casing of the apparatus.
Under normal working conditions, the cam 19 is in the position shown in the diagram, the wheel 1 and pinion 3 being in gear and the wheel 1 and pinion 12, being out of gear. The operation or" the device is as follows:
'When a breakdown occurs, the cam 19 is turned so that the lever 8 is no longer held in position by the said cam, and the said lever 8 is lowered by the action of the spring 13 so that the pinion 12 engages with the wheel 1 and the device 16 indicates the duration of the breakdown. At the same time the cam 19 pushes'back the lever 5 and disengages the pinion 3 from the wheel 1, and the fare indicator is thrown out of action, although the clock mechanism and other gear still remains in action.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the natureof my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed I declare that what I claim is:
1. in time and distance fare indicating apparatus, the combination with a clock mechanism of a pair of levers means carried by one of said levers and engaging with the clock mechanism for operating the fare indicator, means carried by the other lever and operated from the clock mechanism for actuating a device ion totalizing the duration of breakdowns, and means for shifting said le vers in opposite directions, causing thereby the'discontinuance of the operation of the fare indicator and the operation of the totalizing device for breakdowns.
2. The combination with a fare indicator and a totalizing device for breakdowns, of a clock mechanism, shiftable motion-transmitting mechanism ;For conveying motion from the clock mechanism to the fare indicator, shiftable motion-transmitting mechanism for conveying motion from the clock mechanism to the totalizing device, and'means for alternately throwing said motion transmittingmechanisms out of operative connection with the clock mechanism.
3. T he combination with a fare indicator and a totalizing device for breakdowns, oi a clock mechanism, a shiftable lever and pinion mechanism for conveying motion from the clock mechanism to' the fare indicator, a shiftable lever 'and pinion mechanism for conveying motion from the clock mechanism to the totalizing device, and a cam adapted to engage with the lever and pinion mechanisms for shifting them alternately out of op erative engagement with said clock mechanlsm.
4. In an apparatus of the character described, the combination with a flag stafi', of a clock mechanism, a fare indicator operated from the clock mechanism, a totalizing device for breakdowns operated from the clock mechanism, and means actuated by the flag staff for discontinuing the operation of the fare indicator by the clock mechanism and throwing into operation the totalizing device.
