BANJO-SUPPORT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 11, 1907.
Application filed February 2, 1907. Serial No. 355,477.
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK BAMBER PIPER, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Redbourn, St. 'Albans, Herts, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Banjo-Supports; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable othersskilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to banjos, and provides means for enabling the instrument to be rotated on end, say on the stage of a theater while being played upon by the artist, the object in view being to entertain the audience by the exhibition of difiicult and expert performance.
In describing my invention, I will refer to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an illustration of a banjo of the usual form and construction furnished with means for rotating the instrument on its end, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section through the pedal and foot.
In Fig. 1 a is the ordinary casing or drum with the skin removed, and b the extension of the handle to which is attached by screws the plates 0 having flanged ends 0 a plate d is also attached by screws to the inside of the casing a, and e is the rotary device shown in the form of an ordinary ball bearing pedal of a cycle, fixed in between the plates 0, c and (Z. The spindle of this rotary device is fixed into the flange or disk f, which by its size and weight is capable of serving as a pedestal to the banjo which is supported and rotated in the vertical position on the spindle fixed into the said pedestal, the rotation being applied and continued at will by the hand of the artist.
Having thus described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. The combination of a stringed instrument provided with a neck and a rim and a support having a flat base in which said in strument is rotatably supported, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a stringed instrument provided with a neck and a rim and a support on which said instrument is rotatably mounted, said support having a Hat base, and anti-friction devices between said instrument and said support, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK BAMBER PIPER.
Witnesses DQMENICO MANFRED, JENNIE GREENE.
