CONCRETE GUTTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 1 1, 1907.
Application filed September 17,1906. Serial No. 334,851.
T0 all whom/ may cmwern.-
Beit known that LIMAETIN F. HowLEY, 'a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Alle.- gheny and Statefof Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Concrete Gutters, of which the following is a specification, reference bei-ng had `therein to the accompanying drawing.
Thisinvention relates to concrete gutters, and its object is to provide a gutter especially adapted for draining country roads, to prevent, damage to ythe roads by the accumula tion of water thereon, and by heavy rains.
The yinvention comprises a concrete structure of suitablev form in cross section to provide a drain gutter, adapted'to be constructed in lengths or sections and placed end to end in position along the sides of roadways, to form a continuous gutter to carry ofl drainage and-thus protect the road surface.
The invention further consists of a concrete gutter of suitable cross-sectional contour provided with laterally extending flanges or projections adapted to be embedded in the soil alongside a roadway to firmly anchor the gutter and prevent its being loosened or washed away by heavy falls of rain.
The construction of the improvement will be fully described hereinafter, in connection with the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this specification, and its novel features will be defined in the appended claims.
In the drawing, Figure l is a transverse vertical section of a concrete gutter construeted in accordance with the invention and shown as embedded in the soil at the side of a road, Figs. 2 and 3 are similar views showing modified forms of the invention.
In Fig. l the body or trough portieri 1 of the gutter, is of semi-circular form in cross section, and its edges 2 are curved outward and vdownward to adapt them to be firmly embedded in the earth in such a manner as to prevent their being loosened or washed out by overflow.
The material of which the gutter' is constructed may be any of the well known concrete compositions consisting of sand, cement, gravel, etc., and the invention is not restricted to any particular composition.
In Fig. 2 a modification is shown in which the body or trough portion l of the gutter is of V-shape in cross section with its edges 2b deflected downward at opposite inclinations and embedded in the earth as shown.
In the form of the device shown in Fig. 3 the body or trough portion l is of semi-circu lar form in cross section, and its edges are curved downward and then extend outward in opposite directions to provide horizontal anchoring flanges 4.
[n each of the structures shown the.- body portion and the anchoring flanges are of equal thickness throughout the width ofthe gutter and the body-portion (that portion within which the drainings are adapted to flow) is free from any surface projections of sufficient magnitude to prevent a free withdrawal of the gutter from its bed whenthe flange has been freed for such removal. Hence, there is provided a structure whichscan be readily formed 'by molding or otherwise,I and which is free from weakened points such aswould be provided by the placing of flanges, etc., in position to project from the surface of .the body-portion intermediate the ends ofits sidewalls, while the freedom from the surface projections permits of the making of repairs with a minimum amount of labor, there being no requirement of the. removal of any earthvfroin any point beneath the body portion proper, while the preparationof the .bed and the positioningof the gutter therein requires no special skill nor any tamping below the surface of the gutter. Furthermore, by carrying the flanges below the top plane of the wall of the body-portion, the free ed es of the flanges being spaced from said wa ls, said flanges become anchoring and positioning flanges embedded within the earth; the flanges providing two portions each of which extend downwardly in a direction angular with respect to and lying without the plane of a line drawn vertically through the point of juncture of the flange and the side-wall of the gutter, the structure at the point Where the side-walls of the gutter merge into the flanges being such as to provide two portions extending in relatively reverse directions from the top plane of the gutter, the result being to provide each side of the gutter with a laterally extending-portion above which the earth or surrounding material may be placed to resist rising movement of the gutter. In addition, the fact that the point of juncture of the side-wall and the Aflanges is not an abrupt angle, but is in the form of a relatively extended and reinforced structure, liability of damage thereto is greatly eliminated.
The gutter will be constructed in lengths IOO IIO
or sections iitted to ether to provide a continuous gutter and t e utility and advantage of thus providing drainage for country roads Will be apparent.
An important characteristic oi" the inven- -tion is the provision of the oppositely projecting continuous anchoring flanges adapted to be so embedded in the earth as to prevent their being easily loosened or Washed out by heavy rains.
. It is obvious that the invention is not restricted to any particular cross-sectional contour of the gutter but includes all such forms thereof as may' fall Within the terms and scope of the following claims.
`What l claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A road drain comprising a concrete gutter, a cross section of Which is in the form of a depressed drainage-receiving body-portion terminating in oppositely-dispos'ed positioning and anchoring flanges of equal length With the body portion, the Walls of said bodyportion and said anchoring flanges extending in relatively reverse directions from the top plane of the gutter, each flange extending in a direction angular With respect to and lying Without the plane of a line draWn vertically through the point of juncture of the flange and the side-Wall of the gutter, the body-portion and flanges being of substantially equal thickness throughout vthe Width of the gutter.
2. A road drain comprising a concrete gutter, a cross section of Which is in the form of a depressed drainage-receiving body-portion terminating in oppositely-disposed positioning and anchoring flanges of equal length With the body portion7 the free edges of said iianges being beloW the top plane of the gutter and spaced from the Walls thereof, each flange extending in a direction angular With respect to and lying Without the plane of a line draWn vertically through the point of juncture ofthe flange and the side-Wall ofthe gutter, said body-portion and flanges being substantially free from surface projections and of equal thickness throughout the Width of the gutter.
3. In an open-top gutter composed of concrete and adapted to form a drain for road- W ays7 the herein-described gutter-section consisting of a body or trough portion provided With anchoring flanges extending from the side Walls of the trough portion and projecting beloW the top plane of said side Wall, each iiange extending in a direction angular With respect to and lying Without the plane of a line draWn vertically through the point of juncture of the flange and the side-Wall of the gutter, the free edges of the anchoring flanges being spaced from said side Walls, said anchoring flanges being continuous throughout the length of the section, and said bodyportion and anchoring flanges being of substantially equal thickness throughout the Width of the gutter and free from surface projections.
4. A concrete gutter adapted for use as a drain for road-Ways comprising a concavooonvex body portion, having its edges turned doWnWard and projected horizontally to provide anchoring iianges.
