Be. it known that l, GEORGE W. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rockford, in the county of ll'innebzigoand l State of Illinois, have invented certain new l and useful Improvements in Face -.\Iill Grinders, of which the following is aspecitication.
The object of this invention is to construct ainachine for grinding the knives of a inilling-machine, and in which the knives are ground from their cutting edge toward the heel.

The base'l has a cylindrical column 2 which is hollow thereby forming a space 3. The upper end ot the column is closed with the exception of the central opening 4. A rotary water pump 5 is supported by the base, and is driven in any suitable manner. The slide 26 supports a grinding wheel carriage consisting of a base 30 and two ears 31 and 32 each of which is provided with a curved slot 33. This Grinding wheel carriage is pivotally connecte( with the slide 26 by the screw 34 and the upper face'oflthe slide is provided with a T shaped groove 35. Two T headed bolts 36 have their heads located in the groove 35 and their shanks extending upward through the grinding-wheel carriage and receiving nuts on their pro]ect1ng By this connection of the grindingv ends. wheel carriage with the slide 26, the carriage. can be turned on its pivotal center, and
clamped in its adjusted position. A bearing for the grinding wheel is composed of the two bearing surfaces 37 and 3S connected by a branch 39. This branch has a central opening through which a stud 4() passes, thereby connecting it in a pivotal manner with the grinding u heel carriage. Bolts 41 pass through the branch 39 and the two curved slots 33 of the grinding wheel carriage which clamp the grinding wheel bearing in connection with the grinding wheel carriage in an f A shaft 42 is supported adjustable manner. in the two bearings 37 and 38, and a pulley 43 has a connection with the shaft, and is located between the bearings. A grinding wheel 44 has a connection with one end ot' the shaft 42 and a grinding wheel 45 has a connection with the other end of the shaft.
To the upper end of the column 2 is secured a bracket 46 which is provided with a guide-way 47. A slide 4S is supported by the bracket and a screw 4S) engages the slide and is rotated b v the hand wheel 50. The slide 4S supports a swivel-base 5l which is moved by a screw operated by the handwheel 52. This swivel-base 51 supports ay swivel 53 on the center 54. The upper face of the swivel-base is provided with a T shaped circular groove A bolt 56 has its head located in the groove 55 and its shank portion passes through an opening in the swivel, and by means of the nut 57 the swivel can be clam ed in connection with the Swivel-base, a ter the swivel has been properly adjusted. The swivel 53 has its upper portion cylindrical and-is provided with a. vertical lengthwise central opening 58. Around the cylindrical portion of thcswivel is located a cutter-head sleeve 59 which has a vertical slot, and by means of the bolts 6l) passing through the flanges 6l the sleeve can be clamped around the swivel. A screw 62 has a screw-thread connection with the sleeve 59, its lower end resting on a ledge 63 extending from the lower portion of the swivel. The upper end of this screw is in crank handle form. By means of this screw 62 the cutter-head sleeve can he raised and lowered in its connection with the cylindrical portion of the swivel. lThe cutter-head sleeve has a cut-away portion on opposite faces, corresponding with the vertical opening of the swivel. From the cutter-head sleeve extend two perforated ears 64 and 65. Two screws 66 and 67 are supported by the cutter-head sleeve. A support 68 for the cutter spindle has a pivotal connection with the ears 69 b v stud-bolts supported by the ears. The other end of this cutter spindle support is located between the screws 66 and 67 by means of which it may be rocked on its pivotal connection with the cutter-head sleeve. This cutter-spindle support has a central lengthwise opening.
' A cutter-spindle 7() has one end provided with an enlargement 7.1 and its other end 72 is externally screw-threaded. This spindle has a section 73 externally screw-threaded. On the cutter-spindle is located a loose friction element 74 which support a series of spacing disks 75 by the bolts 76 passing through the disks and entering the head of the loose friction element.

A cutter-head 79 supportinga series of knives Si) is connected to a shank Hl which is forced into the lengthwise opening S2 in the cutter-spindle.
From the cutter-spindle support 66 extends an arm S3, to which is pivoted a spacing disk dog S4 intermediate its ends. o one section of this dog is slidably connected a linger having a pointed end adapted to enter the notches of the spacing disks. A handle S6 is provided for this end of the dog. A spring S7 is located between one end of the dog vand the arm SS. This spring serves to hold the Yfinger in some one of the notches of the spacing disls in a yielding manner.
The various spacing-disks are dill'crently spaced with peripheral notches so that some one disk will have the same number of notches as the cutter-head h as knives and by placing the finger alternately in the notches of ay given disk, the various knives of the cutter-head will be presented to the grinding wheel. The linger in its engagement with the spacing disks will hold the cutter-head stationary while a' given knife lis being ground. By means of the screw the cutter-head can be raised and lowered bodily soa-s to presentl the knife properly to the grinding wheel. The grinding wheels 44' and 45 can be turned axially on the center 40 in order to present them at any desired angle to the knives. 1. 1n a face mill grinder} the combination ol' a hase having a cylindrical column, a. bracket having a free swivel engagement with the column, an arm extending from the base, two stops adjustably supported by the bracket toward and from "the arm, a grinding wheel supported by .the bracket, and a IIO cutter-head supportconnected with the column.

In a face mill `grinder, the combination of a hase having a vertical column, a. bracket supported by the column, a `Support having a swivel connection with the bracket, a cutter-head sleeve capable of beingr clamped around the swiveled support, means or Vertically adjusting the cutter-head Sleeve, and a cutter-spindle support pivotally connected with the cutter-head sleeve.
5. In a face mill grinder, the combination a swivel connection with the bracket andprovided with a vertical slot, a cutter-head sleeve capable of being clamped around the swiveled support and provided with a vcrtical slot coinciding with the slot of the swiveled support, a cutter pindle supportlocated within the slots of the Swiveled Support and cutter-head sleeve, and havingr a pivotal connection with the cutter-head sleeve, means for rocking the. cutter-head sleeve and holding' it when adjusted, and means for vertically adjusting the cutter-head sleeve.
