j My invention relates to a controller provided with means for setting the same and mechanism for operating the controller when set, said means after setting the controller being rendered inoperative until the controller has completed its operation, so preventing interference by said setting means with the controller after it'has been set and during Its operation.

My invention as applied to a calling device for automatic telephone systems contemplates a circuit controller such as a circuitcontrolling ratchet adapted to be set by manually-op'era'ted means, with electromagnetic mechanism adapted to operate. said controller after the same is set. The manually-operated means, after setting the controller, are rendered inoperative to affect the controller until said controller has completed its operation.
A feature of the invention consists in the provision of switching mechanism, operated when the manually-operated means are restored to normalcondition, and controlling the operation of said electromagnetic mechanism. Said adapted to be operated by a pulsating or alternating current in a circuit containing a selector-controlling magnet, said mechanism and magnet operating insynchronism until the controller reaches its normal position, when it opens the said circuit. The control ler may be set to different positions according to the number of times it is desired to operate the selector magnet.

Like parts are designated by similar let-' ters of reference throughout the several views. The shaft 1, which is journaled in a post 2 at the rear of the device, and in the face plate 3, carries a circuit-controller or ratchet 4,
which is-loosely mounted on said shaft, being preferably mounted upon a collar or sleeve 5 surrounding the shaft and carrying an insulating pin 6 adapted when the ratchet is in its normal position. to engage a spring 7 and separate the same from itsanvil 8. The ratchet whenaway from normal position is adapted to be returnedby a spring 9 surrounding the shaft and connecting said hub or collar 5 with the post 2, the restoration of Said ratchet by said spring being under the control of an escapement 10 adapted to be operated by the armature 11 of an electromagnet 12.
Upon the outer surface of the face' plate 3 is provided a numbered dial 13, ozcr which. an indicator arm or lever 14, provided with a handle 15, is adapted to be manually moved. The lever 14 controls the means for setting the ratchet wheel to a position such that the escapement 10 must be operated by armature 11 a number of times corresponding to the number on the dial to which the indicator is advanced in setting the ratchet, in order to return the ratchet to normal position.
The arm- 14 is rigidly secured to the shaft 1, said shaft carrying a pivoted pawl 16 adapted to engage, w on the ratchetis in normal osition, a pin 17 carried thereby, said in iaving a recess 18 in which said pawl is a apted to lock against the tension -of a spring 19 tending to force the pawl against l mechanism after the same is set, and a de'- stop 20 upon said shaft. A spring 21 shown in Fig. 2 tends to restore the arm '14 to normal position. Thus normally the pawl 16 locks with the pin 17 of ratchet 4, and when the arm 14 is advanced, said pawl advances the ratchet 4, a number of teeth distant from normal position corresponding to the number to which said arm advances on the dial. The [O instant, however, the arm is released, the spring 19 throws the dog or pawl 16 against the stop 20, so that'in case the handle is manipulated before the ratchet is'restored to' normal position, such improper operation will be without effect upon the ratchet. As the lever approaches normal position, a curvedtail 22 upon the pawl 16 engages a finger 23 extending upwardly from the base of the structure, and forces the pawl 16 0 against'the tension of spring 19'into )osition to enga e the pin 17 when the rate et t is returner to normal position. a
I provide means whereby the escapement cannot be actuated by magnet 12 to-operate and restore the ratchet 4- until the crank arm or indicator arm 14 is restored to normal position. The shaft 1 carries an insulating disk 24 adapted when the arm 14 is away from normal position to separate a spring 25 from 5 ts anvi 26, said spring when the arm. 14 is at its initial position restin in a depression 27 in the periphery of sair? disk in engage.- ment with its anvil 26. Said contacts 25, 26 control the circuit of magnet 12.
Referring to Fig. 8 -which shows a-simplified circuitior the cal ing device, a conductor 28 leads from the free pole of a grounded puleating or alternating source of current 29, as the case may be, through a selector-con- 4 trolling magnet 30 to the calling device and thencethrough magnet 12, contacts 7, 8, and I 25, 26, in'series, to earth. Now assume the crank arm 14 is moved to number 6 upon the dial, the ratchet 4 will be set forward away trom normal position six teeth, the pin 6 bemg withdrawn from contacts 7, 8, permitting the same to close, contacts 25, 26, however, being separated by insulating disk 24. When the crank arm is released and restored to normal position, springs 25, 26 are brought into engagement and the circuit 28 completed, whereupon waves or impulses of current from generator 29 will traverse the magnet 12, vibrating the armatru'e 11 and operatmg the eseapement 10 to cause spring 9 to rotate ratchet 4 six steps back to normal position, whereupon the pin 6 will separate springs 7, 8, and open the circuit 28. The selector magnet 30 will also receive six impulses and operate synchronously with mag;
net 12 of the calling device.

2. The combination with a circuit controller, of manually-operated means adapted to set 'the same, mechanism for operating said controller after the same is set, and means for rendering said manually-operated setting means inoperative until the operation of said controller is completed.
3. The combination with circuit controlling mechanism, of manually-operated means adapted to set the same, electromagnetic mechanism for operating said controlling mechanism after thesame is set, and means, operated as said manually-operated means is withdrawn from said circuit controlling mechanism, for rendering said controlling mechanism inaccessible to said manually-operated means until after the operation of said mechanism.
4. The combination withra circuit controller, of manually-operated means adapted to'set the same, electromagnetic.mechanism for operating said controller after the same is set, and switching mechanism, operated when said nianual means is restored, for renoperative said electromagnetic mechanism. a

In an automatic calling devicethe combination with a circuit controlling ratchet, of a lever and means controlled thereby for setting the ratchet, means actuated after the ratchet is set, to render said lever inetlective to further manipulate the ratchetuntil the same is restored to its initial position, and means for operating said ratchet and restoring the same to normal position.

In an automatic call device, the combination-with a circuit-controlling ratchet, of a lever and means controlled thereby .for' setting the ratchet, means actuated after the ratchet is set, to render said ieverinefl'ective to further manipulate the ratchet until the same is restored to initial position, electromagnetic mechanism for operating said ratchet, and restoring the same to normal position, means for restoring said lever to normal position, and switching mechanism controlling said electromagnetic mechanism, operated by said lever when it reaches normal position.
7. In an automatic calling device, the co1nbination with a circuit-controlling ratchet, of a lever, apawl operated thereby to set said ratchet, means for withdrawing said pawl from the ratchet after the same is set,
means for operating the ratchet, and means for restoring the operative relation of said pawl to the ratchet when said lever and ratchet are restored to initial position.
8. In an automatic calling device, the combination with a circuit-controlling ratchet, of a lever, a pawl operated thereby, a pin on said pawl into position toengage said pinwhen the ratchet reaches normal position. i
9. In an automatic calling device, the combination with a circuit-controlling ratchet,

In an autoniatic'calling device, the combination with a circuit controlling :ratche't, of a lever, a pawl operated thereby to set saidratchet, means tor withdrawing said pawl after the ratchet is set, a spring for restoring said lever, an electromagnet and a circuit therefor controlling the operation of said ratchet, a switch controlling said circuit, an insulating wheel operated by said lever and adapted while the lever is away from normal position to open said switch -and to close the same when the lever 18 restored, and means for restoring the operative relation .of said pawl to the ratchet when I the lever and ratchet-are restored to initial position.
11. The combination with aratchet wheel,
of alever for setting said ratchet, a spring for restoring said lever, a spring for restoring the ratchet, an escapement for said ratchet, an electromagnet and its armature for operating said escapement, a circuit for said magnet, a source of current in said circuit adapted to vibrate the armature of said magnet, and a pair of switches controlling said circuit, one switch-being closed when the lever reaches normal pos tion, and the other switch being opened when the ratchet reaches normal osition.
12.
