TYPE-WRITER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 11, 1907.
T 66 w/tom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JEAN VoLkun, a subject of the German Emperor, and a resident of Ncu-Isenburg, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Relating to TypeJVr-iters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved arrangement which will enable the position of the carriage to be adjusted in a direction at right angles to the track so as to compensate for the thickness of variable numbers of copies to be typed and insure a uniformly straight blow of the type on the paper.
For the purpose of obtaining faultless typing and causing the type to strike the aper perfectly square and with a uniform blow, it is absolutely necessary with most t pewriting machines and-more particularly 0 those in which the t 'pe strikes from the front of the sheet lace over the roller, to provide for an invariable stroke of the type levers. However, most of the type lever mechanisms have a well defined stroke, so 5 that when an unusually thick layer of paper 11. e. a largenumber of copies are placed in the machine it will be necessary to shift the paper away for an appropriate distance. This rearward adjustment of the paper in 'ma'chines having a front action of the type- A levers is effected according to the invention by a receding motion of the carriage and paper-roller by the special means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a side elevation of the carriage of a typewriter fitted with means for adjusting the position of the carriage to suit the amount of paper on the roller. Fig. 2 shows a rear view of the carriage. Fig. 3 is a plan view of Fig. 2. The carriage h which holds the paper roller in the usual manner, runs on rails l andf respectively. The front rail Z has a straight top-surface upon which the carriage Wheel Ir runs. This rail is immovable and onlytho carriage wheelsaltcr their track along each rail at the forward, or rearward, :uljustment of the carriagein accordance withthe amount of paper on the roller. The adjustment of the carriage in the direction at right angles to the track is effected through the intervention of the rear railfwhich for this purpose is arried on pivoted arms 71 secured to each eudfiithe machine by bolts a or the like.
The arms I) are formed with a slot 0 for the reception of an eccentric stud (I mounted on the end of a crank lever c. A scale s is provided on the side of the machine from which the number of sheets and the corresponding position of the carriage can be ascertained.
The rail f is of U-shaped cross-section which allows the carriage wheels '5 to travel along the inner path thereof while horizontal wheelsm of appropriate diameter are provided to run between the sides of such rail and prevent the carriage from unintentional forward or rearward motion. To the rear end at the middle of the carriage is attached a depend- 'ir'ig arm having, a forwardly projecting portion 9 which takes beneath the rail 1 to prevent the tilting of the carriage as will be understood from Fig. 1. If desired, a similar device may be provided at the front of the carriage by adapting an arm to engage around I a convenient recess or the like in the machine- 7 5 frame.
Obviously the arrangement hereinbefore described permits of the ready adjustment of the carriage 7b to suit the amount of paper on the roller and thus insures the t es coming square upon the paper on the r0 ler as is indicated b the arrow 1). In-typewriters' having a dil ercnt lever motion the details of construction of the parts can be altered to suit each machine.
Having now fully described my said in vention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: v
1. In a typewriter the combination with the carriage and the platen of a fiat front rail adapted to receive the front wheel of the carriage and to allow of the latter running in parallel paths on it, of an U-shapedrear rail, of vertical wheels mounted on the carriage and adapted to run on the rear rail, of horizontal guide rollers mounted on vertical studs of the said carriage and adaptcd'to move in the channel of the said guide rail and means'for imparting and controlling forward or rearward adjustment of the canriage, substantially as'tand for the'purpose described.
2. In a typcwriter'thc combination with the carriage and the platen of a flat front rail adapted to receive ,the front wheel of the carriage and to allow of the latter running in parallel paths on it, of an U-shaped rear rail, of vertical wheels mounted on the carlOt riage and adapted to run on the rear rail, of horizontalguide rollers mounted on vertical studs of the -'said carriage and adapted to move in the channel of the said guide rail, of arms pivoted to the frame work of the machine and supporting the said guide rail and means for causing the said arms to swing on the frame work and for adjusting same substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a typewriter the combination with the carriage, the front rail and the rear guide rail of the latter, the swinging arms supporting the said guide rail, of a slot arranged in one of the said arms an eccentric stud working in the said. slot and a crank handle adapted to operate the said stud substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. In a typewriter the combination \.itn.
the carriage, the front rail and the rear guide rail of the latter, the swinging arms support ing the said guide rail, of aslot arranged in one of the said arms; an eccentric stud working in the said slot and a crank handle adapted to operate the said stud, of a scale mounted on the frame work of the machine under the said operating arm substantially as and for the purpose set forth. 7
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two Witnesses.
