Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ROBERT EDMONDSON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at South Bend, St. Joseph county, in the State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Molding Concrete Building-Blocks and Artificial Stone, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to machines for molding concrete building blocks and artificial stone.
An object of my invention is to construct a machine that one man can move and manipulate.
Another object is to provide manually operable means in the form of handles arranged at opposite ends of the mold box and connected to the end sides in such a manner as to cause the unlocking and opening and. the closing and locking of the latter.
A further object is to cause the opening of the top side through the opening of the end sides.
A still further object is to provide stops to limit the turning movement of the mold box.
Other and further objects will appear in the following description and will be more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
The sides of the mold will be distinguished from each other by reference to that portion of the mold which said sides form.
In the drawings z-Figure 1 is a front view of the frame showing the mold box in position to be filled. Fig. 2 is a side view with the mold box in the position shown in Fig. 1. S is a front view with the inner front side member removed and the other sides in open positions. Fig. 4 is a side view showing the mold box in position to be opened. Fig. 5 is a side view showing the completed block and the mold box open and moved away from the block.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 indicates the legs of a frame or sup port and 2 indicates the side bars or rails forming the top of the frame. Located at one end of the frame is the completed block receiver which comprises two transverse bars 4 resting at each end upon the upper ends of set screws 4 mounted in the side bars, and two bars 3 connecting the bars 4.
Mounted on the frame is the mold box which comprises a double front side, a top side 8 hinged along one edge by hinges 12 to the front side, end sides 9 hinged at 14 to the front side, and a removable side 1.0. i The front side is composed of a rigid outer member 5 and a removable inner member 6 which is detachably secured to the outer member by any suitable means. The means shown comprises a pair of rods 7 which pass through openings in the outer member 5 and in the inner member 6. This removable inner member 6 may be formed with any suitable design and by being removable permits the design to be changed. The front side member 5 is provided with spring extensions at each end and on these extensions are mounted bearings 24 to each of which is pivoted one end of a knuckle joint comprising two levers 25 and 26 pivoted end to end, the other end of the joint being pivoted to ears 19 on an end side 9. When the knuckle joints are extended they serve to hold theend sides 9 closed and locked, and when broken cause the opening of the end sides. As a means for breaking the knuckle joints and opening the end side I provide bell crank levers pivoted to bearings 24, formed with handles 18 at one end and having their other ends connected to the joints of the knuckle joints. To increase the pressure on the end sides transmitted by handles 18, the bearings 24 are adjustable toward the end sides. This is accomplished by providing slots 21. in the front side extensions, to permit the bolts 20 to be adjusted. To cause the top side 8 to be opened automatically when the end sides 9 are opened I provide the following means. The ends of the top side have extending therefrom curved or cam arms which are engaged by the adjacent edges of the end sides. The top side 8 is held to the end sides 9 by means of pivoted latches 13 which engage keepers 15 on the end sides. The removable lower side 10 is held in place by adjustable lugs 16 carried by the end sides 9 and by ad justable lug 17 carried by the front side member 5.
- As a means for preventing the mold box making too many turns on the frame and at the same time to permit it to slide away from the completed block receiver, 1 provide the following: Bolted at 23 to the front mold side and extending therefrom are two arms 27 which have two outwardly extending projections near their ends. These projections j engage the under side of the bars 2 when the mold box is in the positions shown in Figs. 4
and 5.
The operation is as follows :The mold box in the position shown in Figs. 1 and. 2 is filled and after being properly tamped the box is turned by a handle 22 until it reaches the position shown in Fig. 4. Handles 18 are now moved to open the mold box. As the mold box opens the side 10 is freed, and the side and the block rest upon the completed mold receiver bars 3. The mold box is then moved away from the block by sliding the box on rails 2. When the box is en tirely away from the block, the mold sides are closed and the mold moved to its original position. Another removable side 10 is fitted to the box and the mold is ready for the formation of another block.
The completed block receiver is vertically adjustable to permit it to be in proper position to receive the removable side 10.
It will of course be understood that with slight changes the mold. may be adapted for making blocks of various other shapes.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A mold box comprising a front side having a rigid outer member, and a removable inner block facing member; end sides hinged to the front side; a top side; and a removable side opposed to the top side.
2. A mold box comprising a front side having a rigid outer member, a removable inner member and rods securing the inner to the outer member; end sides hinged to the front side; a top side; and a removable side opposed to the top side.
3. The combination with a frame, of a mold box mounted to turn and toslide on the frame, and means carried by the mold box and limiting the turning movement.
7 4. The combination with the frame side bars, of a mold box adapted to turn and slide on the side bars, and arms extending from the mold box and carrying means to engage the under side of the side bars.
5. A mold box having hinged sides, knuckle joints holding the sides closed, and
bell crank levers pivoted to the mold box i and connected to the knuckle joints for open ing the hinged sides.
6. A mold box provided with spring exthe slots, hinged sides, knuckle joints connecting the bearings and the hinged sides, and operating handles secured to the bearings and to the knuckle joints.
9. A mold box having hinged sides, knuckle joints connected at one of their ends to the sides, adjustable bearings for the other ends of the knuckle joints, and handles for operating the joints, secured to the bearings.
10. A mold box having hinged end sides, a hinged top side, a removable side opposed to the hinged top side, means for opening the hinged end sides and connection between the hinged top side and the hinged end sides causing the opening of the top side when the end sides are opened.
11. A mold box having a front side, end
and top sides hinged to the front side, a re movable side opposed to the hinged-top side, and adjustable lugs on the end sides and the fIiOIlt side for securing the removable side in ace.
p 12. The combination with a frame, of a mold box mounted on the frame to turn thereon and having a removable side, and a completed block receiver vertically adjustable on the frame.
13. The combination with a frame, of a mold box mounted to turn and slide on the frame and provided with a removable side.
