SAFETY GUARD OR FENDER FOR TRAIVIWAY-CARS AND THE LIKE- Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I, GUSTAV HAUFF, a subject of the King of Norway, and residing at 7 Second avenue, Kenilworth, Kimberley, in Cape Colony, have invented a certain Improvement in Safety Guards or Fenders for Tramway-Cars and the Like, of which the following is a specification.
The subject of my invention is a device in-. tended to be fitted under or in front of the body of a tramcar or similar vehicle, with the object of preventing accidents to pedestrians or others who may chance to collide with or fall in front of such vehicle or car. It has been found hitherto with apparatus of this description, that, owing to the oscillation of the car and other causes, a person falling in the road in front of a car in motion is severely injured owing to some portion of the body or clothing of such person being caught by or passing under the front bar of the guard or fender, thereby preventing the said person being lifted on to and carried by such guard. My invention is intended to remedy this defect, and to attain this object, I provide the front portion of such guard or fender with a hinged shelf or extension which shall, immediately upon coming in contact with the body of the person who has been knocked down, fold upward thereby tending to lift the said person up into a net or other support attached to the guard or fender and carried thereon.
In order that my invention may be more readily understood, reference is made'to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, wherein I have illustrated a portion of a tramcar having my device applied thereto.
Like letters indicate similar parts in both of the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the bogie of a tramcar showing my invention applied to a guard carried by the framing of the bogie. Fig. 2 shows in diagram the successive positions assumed by the respective parts after coming in contact with an object lying upon the track.
The guard consists of a metal frame work A which is hinged at a to the front of the bogie frame B. b is an adjusting spring and c are stops for limiting the upward movement of the framework A. To the front of the framework A is attached one or a series of plates 0 which are hinged to each other and to the framework in such a manner that 1 they can only fold upward. To the outerv edge of the plate or plates C is attached one side of a second framework D the side rails of which slide upon and are supported by the said framework A. The back of the frame D is turned upward and the frame is covered with a net or other receptacle E jadapted to support and carry any object picked up by the guard, clear of the ground.
The action of the device is as followsImmediately the front edge of the plates C comes in contact with the body of a person or other object lying upon the ground, the front part of the frame A is depressed against the track upon which it slides due to the forward motion; at the same time the plates 0 begin to fold upward and in so doing tend to lift the said body or object, while at the same time the forward movement of the car further raises it and causes the plates to fold backward thereby lifting the body or object into the net or other receptacle. The action will be readily understood by reference 7 to Fig. 2. v
By the adoption of my device it will thus be found impossible for any object to pass under the guard or be jammed under the front rail.
I wish it to be understood, that I do not confine my invention to a guard of the pattern illustrated, as the same may be applied to guards or fenders of other descriptions without departing from the spirit thereof and the constructional details of the device may be modified according to requirements.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with a vehicle of a guard attached to and projecting forwardly from the vehicle and a forwardly projecting extension hinged or pivoted to the forward end of such guard and so disposed as to be turned upward and backward relatively thereto by contact with an obstacle.
2. The combination with a vehicle of a guard attached to and projecting forwardly from the vehicle, a forwardly projecting extension hinged or pivoted to the forward end of such guard and so disposed as to turn up ward and backward relatively thereto when an obstacle is encountered and a frame pivotally connected to the extension and adapted to slide upon the guard.
3. The combination with a vehicle of a guard attached to and projecting forwardly from the vehicle, a forwardly projecting ex- TOG tension hinged or pivoted to the forward end of said guard and so disposed as to turn upward and backward relatively thereto when an obstacle is encountered, a frame pivotally connected to the extension and adapted to slide upon the guard, and a net upon said fran. e.
4. The combination with a vehicle of a guard pivoted to and projecting forwardly from the vehicle, a spring tending to keep the front portion of the guard slightly above the rail level, stops to limit the movement of the guard, a forwardly projecting extension hinged or pivoted to the forward end of the guard and s0 disposed as to fold upward and backward when an obstacle is encountered.
