Speccation of Letters Patent. i
.i Y Patented `lliay28, 19.07.,;
Application filed March 27,1907. Serial No, 364,809- ll vTo a/ZZwh/om it may concern.
` Be it known that we, WILLIAM T MoNABB, residing at Ben Avon, in the county of Allegheny, and FRANK ENDEns, residing at Kittanning, inthe county of Armstron State oi Pennsylvania, citizens oftheUnited States of America, haveI invented certainl 'new and useful Improvements in .Ice-Tongs, of which the following is a speciiicatiomreference bep ing had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to ice tongs, and the invention has for its bbject toprovide novel .means for closing a pair of tongsand .automatically opening thefsame. f
Another object ofthis invention is to im- -prove the construction .of ice tongs `by in- .creasing their `strength,"dura bili ty and effi-- ciency. 1
A further object of this inventionl is to .provide ice tongs that can be readily manipuv .lated With one hand, thus leavin the other .hand of an operatorfreeto manipulate another 'similar devicer orperform other work.
With the above and other objects in view,
which will more readily appear as the inven- .tlon is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of partsto be hereinafter more fully described andv then specifically pointedl out in the appended claims. Y
Referring to the drawing forming art of. this specification, like numerals of re erence designato corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which:
'i Figure l-isa front elevationoi ourimproved ice tongs partly in section, Fig. 2 is-a.
side elevationof thejsame, Fig. 3 is a fra mentary elevationillustrating a Aslightly modgifiedforrnoiconstruction.
vTo put our invention into practice, .we emloy two metallic plates Leach oiwhich is ormed with a central` raised. portionl prof viding a sleeve or guide way when said plates are secured together by rivets 3. i
Secured to the outer sides'ofthe plateslL by rivets 4 are the bifurcated ends 5 of a" handle 6, said handle bein substantially of a rectangular form adapte to accommodate i the handlev 7 of an actuating rod 8, said rod lbeing movably mounted inthe sleeve 2.
Suitablysecured to the handle 7 is a leaf `spr'in 9, said sprin bearing against theun-l dersi e of the hand e6 andnorm'allyholding the handle-7 in alowered position.
j lThe lower end of the actuatinrg rod 9 is provided with a cross head 10. an pivotalljyT connected to said cross head, as at 11, are. two `hook-shaped members or tines 12, these members or tines being suitably shaped ac.4
cording to the use of our improved tongs.
The members or tines 12. are further con-l nected by links 14 to the plates 1. y By referring to Fig. '1 of the drawings,.it
will" be observed that the handle 67is conl structed of a strap, while the handle 7 is constructed fom the upper end of the actuating..
.this construction reducing the expense of manufacturing the tongs.
In operatiomit will be observed that it 'is only necessary to, grip the' handles 6, and 7 and compress the spring 9 to elevate the vactuating vrod 8 and 4close the hook-shaped members or tines 12 upon the object to be elevated or lifted by the tongs.
Our improved tongs. areconstructed of strong and durable metal and we desire it to be understood that such changes in the size,
proportion and'minor details of construction,
as 'are permissible -by the appended claims,- may be resorted tov Without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.. l
What we lclaim and desire to secure by -Letters Patent, is
1. A pair of ice tongs consisting of con- .nected plates, a sleeve formed by said plates, a handle connected to said plates, an actuating' rodl mo v ably mounted in said 'sleeve and terminating in a handle within the rst mentioned handle, a spring located between said handlesfor holding said actuating rod in a lowered position, ahead'carried by the lower endof said rod, hook-shaped members orv tines pivotally cnnected to. said head, and links connecting' said membersor tines with said plates, substantially as described.
.2..A pair of tongsconsisting of a sleeve, a
vhandle located above said sleeve, an actuat. Iing rod slidably mounted in .said sleeve and IOO "-- sald rod 3.'A .pair of tongs'embodying plates providing a handle, a rod slidably mounted between said plates and terminating in a handle Within thevfirst mentioned handle, hookshaped members connecting with the lower end of said rod,` links connecting said members and said plates, andmeans interposed between said handles lor maintainingsaid rod in a lowered position.' 15 In testimony whereof we aHix our signam.- tures in the presence of two witnesses?
