SEWING-MACHINE HEIVIIVIER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May '7, 1907.
Application filed January 31, 1907- $erial No. 355,146.
lb all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THERESE S. ZAOHAIRA, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, Astoria, borough of Queens, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Sewing-Machine Hemmer, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to hemmers designed to be attached to sewing machines, and has for its object to provide means simple in construction, effective in operation, and adapted to readily form a hem of any desired width. Such objects I accomplish by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which drawings like characters of reference indicate like parts throughout the views, and in which Figure 1 is a plan of a hemmer embodying my invention attached to a supporting arm adapted to be mounted on a sewing machine; Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section taken on the line,2-2 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a front elevation of a gage plate and supporting bar detached.
As illustrated in the drawings, an arm 1 is provided on one end'with a hub 1 which is secured to a stud 2 preferably by means of a threaded engagement. The opposite end of said arm is attached to a guide frame having an upper plate 3, base plate 4, and anintermediate guide plate 5 spaced from the upper plate 3 and base plate 4. The forward edge 3 of the upper plate 3 is inclined diagonally backward from its juncture with the base plate 4 to aid in folding the material operated on, and the end of "the upper plate is turned under forming the guide plate 5, indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1. The guide plate is provided with an up-turned tongue 5 that projects forward of the diagonal edge 3 of the upper plate 3, the forward edge of the tongue 5 being preferably parallel with the forward dia onal folding edge 3 of the upper plate. T e junction between the upper plate 3 and guide plate 5 forms a guide 5 for the inner edge of the hem, as shown in Fig. 2, and the forward end of said guide plate is provided with a notch 5 arranged between said tongue and the edge guide 5. A supporting arm 6 is provided with a longitudinal slot 6 adapted to engage thumb screws 7 which are mounted upon blocks 3 on the upper plate 3 by means of which the thumb screws may be securely attached to the upper plate 3 and hold the supporting arm 6 in its adjusted position. A gage plate 6 is carried by the arm 6, preferably formed integral therewith, and provided with a lateral folding edge 6 and a diagonally extending forward edge 6 parallel with the forward edge 3 of the upper plate 3. The juncture 6 of the lateral edge 6 with the forward edge 6 of the gage plate is rounded, and may be slightly up-turned, as shown in Fig. 3, and
the gage plate may be cut away centrally if desired, as shown in Fig. 1.
The device is preferably attached to the presser foot of a sewing machine and disposed in front of and adjacent to the stitch forming mechanism. By means of the stud 2 the device may be so attached as to permit a slight vertical movement of the guide plate and enable the guide frame to be raised from the work plate of the machine when desired. The fabric to be hemmed is inserted between the base plate 4 and the gage plate 6 the fold thereof doubled over the lateral folding edge 6 of the gage plate, and the edge of the hem brought to bear against the inner edge guide 5. The guide 5 is arranged slightly to the side of the edge turning tongue 5 so that the inner edge of the hem will be turned in by the notch 5 and tongue 5, and the edge of the hem so turned is guided over the late 5 and along the inner edge guide 5 in a line parallel with the lateral folding edge 6 of the gage plate 6. By moving the gage plate 6 transversely of the guide frame the distance between the folding edge 6 and the edge guide 5 may be adjusted to form a hem of any desired width. A pointer 3 on the upper plate 3 is adapted to register with the divisions of a scale 6 formed on the supporting arm 6 to indicate the position of the folding edge of the gage plate 6 relative to the edge guide 5. v
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A hemmer comprising a base plate, an upper folding plate having a diagonal forward edge, an intermediate guide plate forming by its juncture with the upper plate a guide for the inner edge of a hem, and provided with a tongue extending forward of said diagonal edge, and a notch adjacent thereto, and a gage plate arranged between the base plate and top plate, and provided with a diagonal front edge parallel with the forward edge of the upper folding plate, and
IIO
a lateral turning edge adjustable in operative relation with said inner edge guide.
2. A hemmer com rising a base plate, an upper folding plate fiaving a diagonal forward edge, an intermediate guide plate forming by its junction with the upper plate a guide for the inner edge of a hem, a tongue formed on said intermediate guide plate and provided with a diagonal forward edge extending beyond the diagonal edge of the upper plate, and a lateral adjustable gage plate provided with adiagonally extending forward edge parallel with the diagonal forward edge of the upper folding plate and a lateral edge adjustable in operative relation with said inner edge guide.
3. A hemmer comprising a base plate, an vupper forming plate having a diagonal forward edge, an intermediate guide plate forming by its junction with the upper plate a guide for the inner edge of a hem, and provided with a tongue extending forward of said diagonal edge, and a notch adjacent thereto, and a laterally adjustable gage plate provided with a diagonally extending forward edge parallel with the diagonal forward edge of the upper folding late, a lateral edge extending in operative re ation with said in ner edge guide, and a rounded juncture be tween said lateral and forward edges.
4. A hemmer comprising a base plate, an upper folding plate having a diagonal folding edge and a gage point, an intermediate guide' I plate forming by its junction with the upper plate a guide for the inner edge of a hem, and
provided with a tongue extending forward of
