provided with openings F through which the draft rods G extend, as shown in Fig. 5, said draft'rods also extending through a diagonally disposed swinging spacing bar H loose at both ends and. extending below the main beam D and perforated at vll for the draft rods G, see Figs. 4 and These bars F and H operate to maintain the draft rods preferablyspaced apart in the operation of the machine.
The main frame is-supported by the furrow wheel I and the land side wheels J whose forked arms I and J are provided with upwardly extending shafts I and J journaled in bearings mounted on the main frame. The wheel I runs in a furrow and may be adjusted up and downand held at any desired height by means of the lever I arranged as best shown in Fig. 2.
The beam 1) is channeled in its rear and Be it known that we, RICHARD J. VICKERY and JOHN J. DINsMoRE, citizens of the United States, and residents of Clark, in the county of Clark and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plows, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention is an improvement in plows, and particularly in plows arranged in gangs; and the invention consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a top plan view partly broken away in section and parts being removed of an implement embodying-our invention. Fig. 2 is a side view thereof the plows proper and their beams and adjusting devices being removed. Fig.3 is a front ele-' vation of the framing of the plow and its supporting means. Fig. 4 is a perspective view ofthe frame and its supporting beams. Fig. 5 is a detail sectional elevation illustrating cure seat in which we fasten by bolts or rivets the step shaped bar L having the lateral wings L and the longitudinal wings L the latter bracing'the outer ends of the lateral wings L, as shown in Figs. 1, and 4 and the plate L being secured to the beam D of the main frame at the juncture of its said wings L and L as shown. I
,By the described construction we provide at intervals along'the diagonal main beam laterally'projecting plates or bars to whichare pivoted the swinging braces M which connect with and operate to steady the rear ends of the plow beams in'the use of the invention. These swinging braces M are formed as best shown in Figs. 1 and 6 with a shaft M journaled in eyes M 2 on the plates or bars L and with the side bars M which extend from the ends of the shaft M and converge toward their rear ends where they are'pivoted at M to a post N mounted onthe plow beam N near its rear end. By this construction the swinging brace steadies the rear end of the plow b time does not interfere with the raising and loweringof said beam in the operation of the implement.
The plow beam diately connected therewith, and Fig. 6 is a sectional elevation onabout line 66 of Fig. 5, and Fig. 7 is a detail plan view showing a the swinging braces and a portion of the step-' shape plate.
In carrying out our invention we provide a frame as shown in Figs; 3 and 4 and comprising a front beam A, side beams B and C, the beamB extending to a considerable distance in rear of the'beamC, and a diagonal main beam D secured at its rear end upon the side beam B near the rear end thereof and at its front end upon the side beam C near the front end of said side beam 0 and directly in rear of the beam A, which beam A extends transversely across the frame atthe front end thereof "and is secured at its opposite ends upon the beams B and C, as shown in Fi s. 3 The beams A, C and D-are of structural metal and theupper faces of the beams A and D are in the same lane and form a base upon which a platorm E is secured. This platform extends substantially over the entire frame and is N has atits front end the preferably made of 2x2 timbers, set slightly clevis N? which is connected by the link .or apart, as shownin Fig. 3.. The operator may clevis N with the draft rod G. The gage wheel 0, colter P and nected with the beam.

The plow earns are each suspended by the front and rear hangers R and S, referably in the form ofchains from the bel crank levers R and S which latter are connected by the rods R and S with the hand lever T, the connection with the front and rear bell crank levers R and S bein effected on opposite sides of and respectivelvbelow and above the pivot T of the operating lever,
: and the latter having a detent'T engag in a rack T whereby the beam' may be entire therewith may be elevated, but the front end of the beam will be raised allowing the plow to run out of the ground gradually. 2O
a site side beams, the upper faces of the diago-j In operation the im lement may be connected with any suitab e form of traction engine to which end we secure to the front side of the draft bar F a triangular wooden draft frame U connected at U to the said draft bar and having a central draw bar U 2 of iron extending across the frame U at the middle thereof and provided at its front projecting end with an eye U which may be coupled in any desired manner with the traction englue or other suitable draft apparatus.
We claim 1. The combination substantially as here- -in described with the main frame havin the opposite side beams, the transverse ont beam secured upon the side beams and the diagonal main-beam secured upon the opponal main beam and the front beam being in the sanie plane, the latform secured upon. said beams, the whee s journaled to the side beams and adapted to support the main frame, a transverse draft bar at the front of; the main frame and below the front beam and provided with perforations for the draft rods, the diagonal spacing bar arranged in. rear of the front draft bar and perforated in alinement with the perforations in said front bar to receive draft rods, draft rods in the said perforations of the front draft beam and spacing bar, the plow beamsconnected at their front ends to the rear ends of the draft -,rods, the step shaped plate secured to the rear side of the diagonal beam .and having the lateral wings and the lon itudinal wings extending from the outer en s of the lateral wings to the diagonal beam, the swinging braces pivoted at t eir upper frontends to the: respective lateral wings of the step shaped plate, connections between the rear ends of :thd-swinging braces and the plow beams, '60
hangers in connection with the front and rear ends of the plow beams, bell crank levers levers connected with'the bell crank levers to operate the same, substantiallyas set fortln connected with said hangers, and operating nally disposed main beam and provided there-' on withlateral plates or bars arranged in stephke form, swinging braces pivoted at their upper forward ends to their respective lateral plates-or bars, plovi'rj beams connected with the rear swingingx ends of the respective swmging braces, :means for elevating the plow beams, and draft devices in connection with the said beams, substantially as set forth;
3. The combination of a main frame having a diagonal main beam, and a series of lateral beams or plates arranged in step form, a series of plows corresponding to said lateral plates or beams, swinging braces connecting the said plows with their'respective lateral beams or plates, and means supported on the main frame for raising and lowering the several 'plows independently, substantially as 'set forth, 7
4. The combination with the main frame havin draft ar at t e front of the main frame, and
a diagonal main beamfa transverse a diagonal laterally swinging spacing bar in rear of said front bar and provided with perforations for draft rods,,a series of plow beams in rear of said diagonal s acin bar, a series of draft rods extendin t oug the spacing bar and connected wit the front draft .bar,
and connections between the rear ends of the several draft ro'dsand. their respective plow beams, substantially asset forth,
5-. The combination of the main frame having. a front draft bar, a diagonal spacing bar in rear thereof and perforated for draft rods,
and a; diagonal main beam provided with lat-- eral bars or plates in ste form, low beams below the several lateral ars or p ates, swing; ing braces between the plow beams and said lateral bars or plates, meanson the main frame for raising and "lowering .the several plow. beams, draft rods extending throughthe spacing bar and, connected with'the front" draft bar, and connections between the'said' 1 draft rods and their resfivectiveplow beams substantially as set fort RICHARD J. vroKERYQ,
