INDICATOR.
Specification of Letters Yatent.
, Patented May 7, 1907.
Application filed October 19, 1905. Serial No. 283,462.
' To all] whom it may concern:
Be it known that L'THoMAs B. RICE, Jr.,'a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Indicator, of which the following is a specification. I
My invention consists of a new and useful device for indicating at what hour and how long a blow off in a boiler has occurred, whereby I am enabled to accurately indicate and note the same. v
It further consists of novel details of construction, all as will be hereinafter set forth.
Figure 1 represents a partial sectional view of a device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a diagraminatical view of the indicator and wires leading therefrom. Figs. 3, 4 and represent perspective views of portions of the device in detached position. Fig. 6 represents a perspective view of a portion of the indicator showing the different forms employed.-
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
eferring to the drawings. 1 designates'a 1pipe leading from a boiler, not shown, same aving a coupling 2 suitably attached thereto, in the (present instance by means of threads, sai
coupling being also connected with a pipe 3 which leads to a suitable point of exhaust, it being noted that the coupling forms a continuation of the pipes 1 and 3 an the said coupling is provided with a suitable opening or passage 4 through one side thereof. 5 deslgnates a cap' which is providedwitha flange 6 which is adapted to rest upon the coupling 2 and between the same is a pacliin g 7,, said cap 5 being secured to the coupling in any desired manner as by screws 8, it being noted that said cap is situated over theopening 4. Depending from the cap 5 are lugs 9, secured in which and extending between thesame is a pin 10, said pin serving as a support for-the plate 11 whichis bent to form an eye 12 which surrounds the said pin and has an arm 13 extending therefrom, a suitable brace 14 being connected with the lower por-' tion of the plate 11 and the outer end of the arm 13 in order to stiffen and support both parts. A l
15 designates a rod which is connected with the arm 13 and-which passes upwardly through a stufling box 16 which is connected nected with a rod 15.
which and the said nut 19 is secured, one end of the conductor or wire 21, the parts being suitably held in position b a nut .22 con- In t e plate 20 is an opening 23 through which passes a rod 24,
said rod being mounted in the insulated block 25 carried by the cap 5, said rod serving as a ide for the plate in its movement. The p ate 20 is provided'with a downwardly extending-portion 26 which is adapted to contact at the roper time with the contact late 27 which is likewise secured to the insuating' block 25 and said plate 27 has one end of a suitable conductor or, wire 28 in proper electrical connection.
29 designates a casing which surrounds the operative parts of the device and which is hinged or otherwise secured to. the lugs 30 on the coupling 2, said casing beihgprovided with lugs 31 having a suitable opening therethrough adapted to receive the shank of the lock 32 or other suitable fastening means- As will be seen from Fig. 2, the wires or conductors 21 and 28 lead to anindicator 33, said indicator being of any desired form and construction and will be adapted to operate when t that a suitable battery 34 is included in the circuit and it will be understoodthat the pointer 35 is suitably connected with the operatin mechanism of the indicator 33 in order to e actuated thereby.
36 designates a dial upon the face of the indicator which indicates the time in con :junction with the movement of'the pointer 35, it being noted that the indicator is provided with a suitable locking device 37 for evident purposes.
The operation will be'readily understood. It is of importance to know and indicate the time that the boiler is blown off and how long it takes for the operation and in the device just described this can be readily accomplished. The'water from the boiler,'und'er pressure, passes through the pipe 1 and in its passage strikes the plate 11 which is rotated upon the pin 10, it being understood that all the parts are in the position seen in circuit is closed, it being noted Fig. 1 before this takes place. As the plate Having thus described my invention, what 55 1 1 is rotated in the direction indicated by the arrow in said figure, the arm 13 is lowered which carries with it the rod 15 and overinits movement carries down the contact the pointer which will continue to move by clock work, for example, until the water has ceased to flow or has been stopped, whereupon the spring 18 returns the platell to its normal position and breaks the contact between the portion 26 and the plate 27, at which time the pointer 35 is arrested in its movement and will indicate the time taken in;
the blow oii.
dial and pointer which can be used in place of the one shownin Fig. 2. In this construction, I have shown an arm 38 provided with a suitable marker 39, the same being in contact with the dial 40, it being seen that in this construction the arm 38 and marker 39 are stationary while the dial 40 is connected with i the operative mechanism of the'indicator so that as the dial40 rotates the marker will indicate, as shown in said figure, the time and duration of the blow off.
In the construction seen in Fig. 1, attention is called to the fact that in addition to serving as a guide or casing for the spring, the tubeor pipe 17 also serves as a stop for the nut 19, 'whiclrsame strikes the upper edge of the said tube when the parts are lowered, thus preventing breaking or, jarring of the contact or of the pieces.
While I have shown and described the plate 11 as being bent toiform an eye, it will be evident that any suitable construction of I plate or device may be employed which ex- I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the character described, a pipe, a plate pivotally mounted and extend.- ing thereinto of less width than the diameter of said pipe and extending less thanone-half the distance to the bottom of said pipe, Wherebyclogging of said pipe is prevented.
2. In a device of thecharacter described, a pipe, a plate pivotally mounted and extending thereinto of less Width than the diameter of saidpipe and extending less than one-hall the distance to the bottom of said pipe,
whereby clogging of said pipe is prevented, and contact pieces adapted to be actuated by 1 the movement of said plate. 3; In a device of the character described, a
f vpipe, a plate pivotally mounted and. extend- In Fig. 6 I have shown a construction of a mg theremto of less width than the diameter of said pipe and extending approximately one half the distance to the bottom of said pipe and being adapted to be moved sufiiciently to provide for substantiallygan unobstructed pipe so as'to prevent clogging, an indicator, conductors leading therefrom and contact pieces controlled by'said plate for actuating said indicator.
4. In a device of the character described, a pipe coupling, a detachable cap'therefor, a
plate pivotally mounted on said cap and contact pieces also carried by said ca whereby when said cap is removed all sai parts are carried with it.
5. Ina device of the character described, a pipe coupling, a detachable cap therefor, a plate pivotally mounted on said cap and contact pieces also carried by said cap whereby when said cap is removed all said parts are carried with it, and a cover for said parts carried by said coupling.
6. In a device of the character described, a pipe coupling, a detachable cap therefor, a plate pivotally mounted on said cap, a stationary contact piece on said cap, a movable contact iece of said cap, means for connect ing sai plate and said movable contact piece and said parts being carried with said cap when it is removed.
