Specification of LettersPatent.
l Patented May 7, 1907.
Application filed February 13,1907. Serial No. 357,218.
To @ZZ whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY ANTONY MEIKRANTZ, residing at Laurel Run, Olivers Mills, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and ImprovedLock-Shoe, of which the following 1s a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in that type of lock shoes or brakes adapted for application to vehicle wheels, bob sleds, etc., for locking them while moving or sliding down inclines or over slippery places, and which are especially provided for preventing vehicles from sliding too fast, forward or sidewise, on lateral inclines'or ice covered road ways, and by means of which the vehicle wheels can be locked or released, as desired.
My invention, in its generic nature, comprehends an improved construction of appliance, of the character stated, in the nature of a goose neck rough lockH having means for interchangeably holding the different drag sho es or plates designed for winter or summer use, and in which the several parts have such designs and correlation whereby the entire appliance can be economically and conveniently made'up in an ordinarily equipped blacksmith shop, and which can be quickly applied lfor, use and effectively serve for its intended purposes.
ln its more specific nature my invention consists in certain details of construction that will hereinafter be fully explained and speciiically pointed out in the claims, as well as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:-
Figure 1, is a side elevation of a wagon, showing my invention as applied for use with the summer equipment. Fig. 2, is a longitudinal section of the shoe end of the appliance and illustrates its application to the wheel, the parts having the engagement shown in Fig. l. Fig. 3, is a similar view showing the winter equipment vention. Fig. 4, is a transverse section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5, is a similar view on the line 5-5 on Fig. 3. Fig. 6, is a perspective view of the entire appliance with the summer shoe equipment. Fig. 7, is a longitudinal section of the shoe carrying end of the appliance and illustrates the manner in which the several parts are adjusted to' provide for the removal of the winter equipped calks. Fig. 8, is a detail view of the summer brake shoe. Y
of my in- In carrying out my invention, l provide a .drag frame', composed of two parallel side members a-a having in side view a goose neckf'lshape, the upper ends thereof being joined by a cross piece which may be, and preferably is formed integral with the side members a-a and which has a transverse slot b in which plays a draft ring, c.
The bottom portion of the members a-a are longitudinally extended to form shoe portions CLL-a. which are lalined with and are integral with a main drag plate or shoe d the front end of which curves upwardly as at d and the said shoe portions a-a near the front end have apertures 2d-2d, as clearly shown in Fig. 4, by reference to which it will be seen that the said apertures 2d-2d are adapted to receive a pivot key 'e removably held in the said portions a/-'-a/ by the keeper eC f designates a supplemental shoe or drag plate provided with an apertured and transy versely disposed sleeve f for engaging with the pivot key e and the front end of the said plate f is suitably curved so that the body thereof can be readily fitted over the bottom of the main drag plate when the engaging members or calks of the said plates, presently referred to, are removed.
The main drag plate has a transverse slot l() near its rear end and a longitudinal slot 11 near its front end, the upper ends of both slots being countersunk as at 10a-1la to receive the inclined iianges l2a of the front and rear engaging members or calks 12-#12 that are removably, held in the said slots and are secured in position by a cap plate 13, the forward end of which has apertured ears 13a to engage with the front pivot pin or key e whereby, by swinging the said cap plate upwardly to the position shown in Fig. 7, the engaging members or calks will be exposed so that they can main drag plate, the said cap plate 13 being firmly held locked against the top of the main plate when desired, by a keeper pin 14 that passes through the rear ends of the opposite shoe portions a#0/- of the members a-d From the foregoing, taken in connection with the drawings, the complete construction and the manner in which my lock shoe operates, together with its advantages, willy be readily understood. It will be apparent that by removing the supplemental' shoe and applying thel engaging members or calks l be readily removed from thel at the forward end, f l

provide an effective lock shoe for Winter use, since by placing the slice beneath the Wheel that it is to lock, and attaching the draft ring to some forward portion of the vehicle,
calks Will prevent such movement by removably connecting such calks and providing for detachably securing the smooth faced supplemental drag shoe, the latter, When attached, closes the slots in the main shoe or l plate and acts as a smooth shod shoe for use in the summer or on places Where ice or very steep inclines are not encountered.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 1. A lock shoe comprising a main drag plate, a plurality of engaging members separably connected With the plate, and a means common to all the engaging members for securing them in place in combination With a supplemental drag plate adapted to be tted over the main drag plate When its engaging members are removed.
2. A lock shoe comprising a drag frame, and a main drag plate that forms a iiXed part of the said drag frame, a supplemental drag plate and means for detachably connecting said supplemental drag plate so it can be fitted over the drag face of the other or main plate, for the purposes described..
3. A lock shoe comprising a drag frame, a main drag plate iiXedly connected thereto and engaging members that project from the faces of the said plate, the said members being removably connected to the plate; in combination with a supplemental drafr plate and a means for detachably securing the said supplemental drag plate to the drag frame to lit over the faces of the main drag plate When its engaging members are removed. l
4. A lock shoe Which'eomprises a goose neck shaped drag frame constructed to straddle the Wheel rim, a main drag plate Which forms a iiXed part of the drag frame, an engaging member projected from the faces of the main drag plate and removably held upon the said plate, means for holding said engaging member in place on the main drag plate, said means engaging the pivot cap plate, a supplemental drag plate and the single means for pivotally sustaining the-supplemental drag plate and the cap plate on the drag frame, substantially as shown and described. K
5. The combination With .the side inembers a-a, the main drag plate and theV engaging members or calks removably mounted on the main drag plate; of the supplemental drag plate, the calk securing cap plate, the said supplemental drag plate and the cap plate having alined apertured ends, a key pin Jfor detachably engaging said apertured ends and the side members a', and the lock pin detachably engaging said side members and adapted to lock the cap plate down against the main drag plate for holding the calks on the said plate, as set forth.
