OPEN-SIDE PLANER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 30, 1907.
Application filed July 21,1904. Serial No. 217,495.
To MM w/wm/ [It 'III/I/I/KI/ 0011200770.-
Be it known that I, AUGUST JOHNSTON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Open-Side Planers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to open side planers, and consists of a bed with a reciprocating table, a tool post column with a iixed cross-rail, extending from the bed, a tool post bracket journaled to the bed at the open side of the planer, and means to connect the said crossrail and bracket.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 shows an end view of the planer, Fig. 2 represents a side View of Fig. l with a partial section.
The planing machine comprises the bed A, which supports the tool post column B. From the latter extends at right angles thereto the cross rail 0 which forms a unit therewith. A table D reciproeates on the bed A, the truncated V shaped guides (Z sliding in corresponding grooves in the bed.
A tool holder E is actuated on the slide I), by means of the screw E and the hand wheel E with their appurtenances, not shown, be-
ing similar to the mechanism to actuate toolholder J.
A tool holder F is actuated on the slide C of the cross rail O, by means of the screw C and hand wheels O, C".
On the open side of the planer, a hub to on the bed A, holds a pin G, on which is carried The 1 the hub H of the tool post bracket 1. said bracket is clamped in position to the cross-rail O with the bolt 'i, and to the bed A with the bolts 2'.
On the tool post bracket there is shown the 1' tool holder J, which is moved on the slide J, i by means of the screw J bevel gears J and.
hand wheel J".
All the tool holders can be operated independently of each other.
At onesidc of the planer, in the foundation for the same is a pit K, into which the tool post bracket can be swung as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2.
\Vhen the invention is used as an open side planer, the tool post bracket I is swung down into the pit K, first disengaging the said bracket from the cross rail O by removing the bolt i, and also removing the bolts 'i. The work on the table D can then over-hang therefrom, and a wide piece of material can be planed by using the tool holders E and F. When the tool holder J is also to be used, the bracket I is swung in position as shown in full lines on the drawings the bolts 1' and i clamping it in place.
l'laving described my invention I claim:
In an open side planer, a bed a tool post column connected to and extending from the bed, a cross rail extending at right angles from the column forming a unit therewith, a
swinging tool post bracket journaled to the bed on the open side of the planer, a bolt connecting one end of said bracket and the cross rail, tool holders on the column, cross rail and bracket arranged to operate independently of each other.
Signed at the borough oi" Manhattan. in the county of New York and State of New York this 20th day of July A. 1). 190-1.
