Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 30, 1907.
Application filed May 22,1905. Serial No. 261.495.
T0 aZZ whmn it ntag concern:
Be it known that we, SAMUEL E. KEENER and WiLLIAM A. MUNsoN, both citizens of the United States, residing at Clay Center, in the county of Clay and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in 'indmills, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to the operating mechanism of vertical windmills and the objects are to simplify and strengthen the construction and steady the running of the wind mill.
That our improvements may be the more readily understood and for a more detailed description thereof reference is had herein to the accompanying drawings, in which,-
Figure 1 is a perspective view of awindmill showing our improved mechanism, Fig. 2 is a plan in section showing the relative location of the respective parts of our device, Fig. 3, a vertical section of the same and lfig. 4, a perspective view in detail showing the guideand reciprocating-rods in their respective relation to the slotted cross-head in connection with which our device operates as hereinafter set forth.
Similar figures of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views.
The windmill may be of the ordinary well known construction of the vertical class.
In the windmill shown,1 refers to the blades or sails of the wind-wheel, 2 tothe reciprocating-rod connecting with and. operating the pump or other machinery, to the shaft of thewind-wheel, l to the spur-pinions secured to said shaft- 3, one on either side of said reciprocating-rod and meshing with gear-wheels 6 6 similarly located and connected with each other by eccentric-pin 7 passing through the horizontal slot 26 in the jointed cross-head 24. The journals 5 5 of said gear-wheels 6 6 have their hearings in opposite sides of the frame-work 10 and guide rod 8 passes through bushing 9 in the l 1 l l l l l head of said frame-work. Attached to said frame-work at its base 12 is the casing 11 through which extends the reciprocating-rod 2 and, generally, the usual cable or cord by which the fan or vane 16 is thrown out of or into the wind.
'0 preferably construct our windmill with the guide-rod S midway of the cross-head 24, as shown in l ig. 4; but it may be placed vertically opposite the reciprocating red, as shown in big. 3.
e are aware of the use of the doublecrank with the gear-wheel secured to one shaft, the wrist passing through the slot in the cross-hcad and. the other shaft j ournalcd in the opposite side of the frame-work and it is particularly upon that type of windmill we claim to have improved by the substitu tion for said crank of duplicate pinions and gear-wheels and connecting the latter with the eccentric-pin, as herein shown and described; thus securing a uniform and steady motion and. materially strengthening the construction of the operating mechanism.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is In a windmill, the combination with a supporting frame, of a shaft journalcd therein and carrying a pair oi pinions, a pair of alined stud snal'ts journaled in the frame carrying gears which mesh with said pinions, a crank rod connecting said gears, said rod consisting of a straight bar having its ends connected to the gears, and a reciprocating rod having a slotted cross head in which said crank rod travels, and guides for said reciprocating rod.
In testimony whereof we have allixed our signatures hereto in the presence of two Witnesses.
SAMUEL E. KEENER. l VILIJAM A. MUNSON. \Vitnesses HY XV. STACKPOLE, E. F. STACKPOLE.
