CANE-LOADER.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J ULES B. GAUSSIRAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baldwin, in the parish of St. Mary and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in (Jane-Loaders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvement in cane loaders, and the object of my invention is to produce a simple and easily operated device of this character, primarily intended for use in loading cane into a cart, although it is applicable to other uses.
With this object in view my invention consists in the construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure l is a side view of my improved cane loader Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof with the grapple omitted; Fig. 3 is a rear view thereof with the grapple omitted; Fig. 4 is a plan view showing my improved loader attached to a cart; Fig. 5 is a side view of the grapple detached. Fig. 6 is an end view of said grapple. Fig. 7 is a side view, showing the detent brake.
0. represents the platform of the machine, which in front is provided with side extensions b, on each of which is a swiveled shaft 0, carrying a front or steering wheel d. These steering wheels are moved by hand by means of a lever f mounted on an extension of the shaft projecting up through the extension I). The operating levers for the two steering wheels are connected by means of a link g so that the movement of the lever f operates both steering wheels simultaneously. At the rear the platform is supported on right angled shafts h, which support the large wheels i.
The loader is intended to be drawn over a row of cane that has just been cut, and in front of one of the steering wheels d is a rake provided with teeth 7c. This rake is pivotally mounted on one of the extensions 6, on a pin m, the extensions n runningfrom the rake back to said pin. The rake may be raised or lowered by the operator by means of the handle 0 pivoted at p on the extension I), and pivoted at g to the rake. This lever may be held in any position desired by means of notches r (shown in dotted lines) on the post 8. The function of this rake is to prevent the cane getting entangled with the steering wheel, and also to pile it so that it may be easily seized by the grapple.
The loader ismoved from place to place by means of connections attached to extensions 1), or it may be directly attached to the front of the cart by the means best shown in Fig. 2, in which t represents a link adapted to be pivoted to the front of the cart, which link is pivotally mounted on one end of the swinging arm it which is mounted in a bearing '0 swiveled on one of the rear axles. The arm a swings within a rectangular frame w (see Fig. 3), which is provided with a series of perforations a, through which a pin 3 may be slipped, thus varying the position of the arm it. Obviously, by the means described a forward movement of the cart will move the cane loader also.
On the platform a is firmly mounted an upright rod .2, preferably of metal, and inclined braces 1 and 2 run from this rod to a corner and side of the platform firmly holding it in position. Pivotally mounted on the rod 2 is the swinging derrick arm 3, which is provided with a perforation at its lower end, through which said rod passes. 1 represents an arm connected to said derrick arm, pivotally mounted on the rod 2 by means of a perforated strap 5, which strap terminates in a lever 6, which, when moved by the operator, will, of course swing the derrick arm into any desired position.
A pulley 7 is mounted I on the derrick arm 3 near its outer end, and a rope or cord 8 is attached to the end of this arm and passes down over the pulleys on the grapple 9, and thence downward to a drum 10, the end of said rope being fastened to said drum. 11 represents a guide pulley for the said rope. Obviously, if the drum 10 is turned so as to wind up the rope 8, it will lift the grapple. The drum 10 is mounted on one end of a shaft 12, which shaft is carried in beams 13 attached to the upper face of the platform a. At the other end the shaft 12 is provided with a drum 14, to which the end of a rope 15 is attached, the free end of said rope being attached to a swingletree 16, to which a horse may be attached, although the rope 15 may be operated by hand, if desired. The
ropes 8 and 15, and the drums 10 and 14 are so arranged that the unwinding of one rope causes the winding up of the other and vice versa. The grapple, after is has taken a load of cane and been swung over the cart, is opened in the usual way by means of a rope (not shown), when it will assume the position shown in Fig. 1, when it is ready to be dropped and pick up another load of cane.
Two brakes are provided for shaft 12 one of them being an ordinary band-brake operated by lever 17 having a pawl adapted to engage the stationary rack 18, and the other being a detent brake consisting of a notched shaft wheel 19, mounted on the shaft 12, which wheel is adapted to be engaged by a pawl 20 pivotally mounted on the operating handle 21, a hand-grip 22 being provided to lift the pawl out of engagement with the toothed wheel 19, if desired. Both the brakes are pivoted on one of the beams 13, so thatthey may be swung out of operation whenever desired.
In Fig. 4 is shown the loader attached to a cart, the link t having its curved end passing through a hole in a projection 23 on the side of the cart 24 near its front, the cart being of the ordinary construction.
The grapple is shown in detail in Figs. 5 and 6. It consists of curved jaws arranged in pairs 25 and- 26 pivoted on a long pin 27. Each of these pins is provided with two projecting arms joined by a brace rod 28, and each pair of jaws is provided with a V- shaped frame 29, which comes together at their upper ends, and are fastened by a pin 30 on which is mounted a pulley 31 for the passage of the rope 8. These pairs of jaws are symmetrical with respect to each other, but oppositely located. Each pair of jaws is connected at its upper part by the cross piece 32, and each of the upwardly projecting parts 29 provided with a hook 33, adapted when the grip is closed to fall down over the top of the corresponding part 32. Upon each of the connections 32 is pivoted by means of a frame 34 a tripping device 35, of which there are two, one for each hook, and these tripping devices are operated by hand by means of the cord 36 which runs back to an eye or pulley on the brace 1.
The operation is as follows :Assuming the derrick arm 3 to be over the row of out cane and that the grapple has taken its load of cane, the rope 15 is pulled, unwinding the drum 14 and winding up the drum 10, thus lifting the grapple to the desired height. The operator, who is standing on the platform a, then throws the detent levers into engagement with the toothed-wheel on theshaft 12 stopping the rotation of said shaft. The derrick arm 3 is then swung around until the grapple is over the cart, when the grapple releasing rope is pulled and the load discharged into the cart, the grapple then assuming the position shown in Fig. 1. The derrick arm is then swung back until the grapple is again .over the cane row when the detent brake is released and the weight of the grapple brings it down to get another load of cane, the operator then applying the band-brake to prevent the grapple from falling too rapidly.
The grapple then takes another load of cane and the operation is repeated indefinitely.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is .1. A cane loader comprising a platform, supporting wheels for said platform, a swinging derrick mounted upon said platform adapted to deliver the load to one side of the apparatus, a grapple supported by said derrick, means for operating said derrick and said grapple, and a raking device and a draft device connected to said platform, substan tially as described.
2. A cane loader comprising a platform, supporting wheels for said platform, a swinging derrick mounted on said platform adapted to deliver the load to one side of the apparatus, a grapple supported by said derrick, means for operating said derrick and said grapple separately, brake devices controlling the operation of said grapple, and raking devices and draft devices connected to said v platform, substantially as described.
3. A cane loader comprising a platform, supporting and steering wheels upon which said platform is mounted, a swinging derrick mounted on said platform adapted to deliver the load to one side of the apparatus, a lever for moving said derrick, a grapple carried by said derrick, means for operating said grapple, a detent brake and a friction brake for controlling the operation of said grapple, and raking deviecs and draft devices connected to said platform, substantially as described.
4. In a cane loader, the combination of a platform, a derrick arm mounted so as to swing on said platform and adapted to deliver the load to one side of the apparatus, a lever for moving said derrick arm, ashaft provided with two drums mounted on said platform, a rope fastened to each of said drums, said drums and ropes being so arranged that when one is being wound up the other is being unwound, and a grapple carried by one of said ropes, and raking and draft devices carried ,by said platform substantially as described.
5. In a cane loader, the combination of a platform, wheels supporting said platform, a shaft revolubly mounted uponsaid platform and provided with a drum near each end, a rope attached to each drum, said ropes and drums being so arranged that the winding up of the one causes the unwinding of the other, a swinging derrick arm mounted on said platform adapted to deliver the load to one side of the apparatus, means for swinging said arm, and a grapple, the rope from one of said drums being operatively connected to said grapple, and raking and draft devices carried by said platform substantially as described.
. 6. In a cane loader, the combination of a cart, a loader provided with a movable derrick and adjustable means for fastening said cart to said loader, consisting of a pivoted arm and a guide for said arm, a link adapted to connect said arm With a perforated portion of the cart, and a pin for holding said arm in I0 one of several possible adjustments, substantially as described.
