COAL-FILING APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 30, 1907.
tain Improvements in Coal-Piling Apparatus,
of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements in conveying apparatus of the type used in storing materials in piles.
My invention is particularly adapted to a type of conveyer in which a metallic ribbon is used as the bottom of the carrying portion of the conveying apparatus, the ribbon being longitudinally adjustable to shift the point of discharge, as set forth and claimed in the patent granted to James M. Dodge on Feb. 17th, 1891,.No.i l6,l36.
The object of my invention is to dispense with the usual drum for carrying that portion of the ribbon not in use and to provide means by which the ribbon can be more easily handled.
Referring to the accompanying drawings: Figure 1, is a side view of an elevating conveyer, known as a trimmer, illustrating my invention; Fig. 2, is an enlarged sectional view on the line 2*? Fig. 1; Fig. 3,is aperspective view of the ribbon and its operating cable, and Figs. A and 5 are enlarged views of portions of Fig. 2.
B is a truss structure adapted to travel on rails a-a. This truss structure is mounted on a truck I) at the lower end and its upper end is supported by a frame I) carrying traction wheels. The rail a is supported at intervals by standards A made in any desirable i orm. The wheels at the lower end of the truss structure, as well as at the upper end, in the present instance, are driven by suitable mechanism so that the truss structure may be traversed across the piling floor.
The truss structure carries a conveyor 1), in the present instance, consisting of a chain (1 having a series of 'llights d. This conveyor passes around a foot wheel (1 at the lower end of the truss structure and around a head wheel (Z at the upper end or' the truss structure and it is driven in the direction indicated by the arrow, Fig. 1, by any suitable mechanism. The lower run is the convey ing run and the upper run is the return run of the conveyer. The conveyer is supported by the usual means on both runs and the material is carried from the receiving point at the base of the structure to the point of discharge over a ribbon or metallic band E. This ribbon is made of sheet metal and has been usually wound upon a drum at the base of the truss structure as shown in the above mentioned patent and is adjustably mounted in guides.
By my invention I dispense with the drum at the base of the truss structure and provide guides ee at each side to support that portion of the ribbon which forms the bottom of the trough, plates f-fiorm the sides of the trough as illustrated in Fig. 4. There are guides e on the upper portion of the truss structure, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, for that portion of the apron not in use. The apron, in the present instance, passes over a series of rollers c at the base of the structure, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, but a wheel may be used if desired.
F is a cable attached to the forward end a of the apron and this cable passes around a sheave f at the upper end of the truss structure and then by preference around another sheavef to a driven drum or drums to the rear end 6" of the apron to which it is attached so that the apron E and the cable F form, in fact, an endless structure.
It will be understood that the driving mechanism of the structure may be a single drum, upon which the cable F may be wound one or more times, or it may be formed of two cables both attached to a drum, or to independent drums, as desired; the main. feature of the invention being to so construct the apparatus that that portion 01" the ribbon not in use is carried in a comparatively flat condition by guides on the truss portion of the structure. By this means I dispense with the drum upon which the ribbon is usually coiled at the base of the structure and I also dispense with the operating mechanism at the base of the structure.
The operation in the present instance is as lollows:The coal is first discharged at a point near the piling lloor forming an initial pile and when the apex of the pile reaches the discharge point c of the ribbon then the ribbon is moved longitudinally, shifting the discharge point so that coal will be discharged at a higher elevation and at a point beyond the apex previously formed, and this horizontally as in some types of conveyers.
I claim I 1. The combination in a conveying apparatus, of a frame, an endless belt conveyer carried by said frame, a movable ribbon forming the bottom of the trough of the said conveyer over which the conveyer travels, guides for that portion of the ribbon not in use, and a cable connected to both ends of the ribbon, with means for engaging the cable for longitudinally shifting the ribbon, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a truss structure arranged at an inclination, an endless belt conveyer mounted on said truss structure, wheels at each end of the structure around which the conveyer passes, guides on the structure below the lower run of the conveyer, and guides on the structure above the upper run of the conveyer, a ribbon arranged to travel in said guides, a cable connected to each end of the said ribbon, and means engaging the cable for moving the ribbon longitudinally in its guides, substantially as described.
8. The combination of an elevating conveyer, a truss structure arranged at an inclination, an endless flight conveyer mounted on the said structure, wheels at each end of the structure around which the said conveyer passes, means for driving the conveyer, a trough mounted on the under side of the conveyer, said trough having an open center and guides at each side of the trough, guides on the structure above the return run of the conveyer, and guides at the lower end of the structure, with a flexible ribbon adapted to the said guides, a cable attached to each end of the apron, sheaves at the upper end of the structure around which the cable passes, and means engaging the cable for longitudinally moving the ribbon, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses. i
I CHARLES PIEZ.
