GEORGE NICHOLAS BYL AND JOSEPH KOEHLER, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
LABEL-FASTER.
Specification of Letters'Patent.
Patented April 30, 1907.
Application filed October 15, 1906. Serial No. 838,946.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, GEORGE NICHOLAS BYL and JosEPn KOEI-LLER, citizens of the United States, and residents of JerseyCity, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Label- Paster, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The purpose of the invention is to provide a very simple, durable and economic device for applying labels in quantities to an adhesive surface and so distribute the labels on said surface that while the labels lie close to each other one will be independent of the other, and further to accomplish the work systematically and with despatch.
Another purpose of the invention is to so construct the device that it may be adapted to receive and apply labels of different widths and lengths arranged in bundles or piles sep arated from each other.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompany ing drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the device, a portion of the upper structure being broken away; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section taken practically on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken substantially on the line 33 of Fig. 2 and Fig. 4 is a transverse section taken practically on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2.
The body A of the device is of box formation and is usually made rectangular as shown, although other shapes may be employed; and said body A is open at the top. At the upper portion of said body A an inwardly-extending marginal flange 10 is produced, and at each end of said body near its upper edge an nwardly-extending enlargement 11 is formed, producing a shoulder 12 at the end walls of said body as is shown in Figs. 3 and 4, for a purpose to be hereinafter described.
At each side of the center of the body A a vertical partition 13 is located, which partitions extend from end to end of the body, each partition being provided at a central 'ter corresponding nuts.
lower portion with a vertical slot 14 as is best shown in Fig. 3. Said partitions 13 divide the body A into two side compartments B and B and a central smaller compartment D. At the central portion of the central compartment D a longitudinal partition 15 is located, which also extends from end to end of the body but terminates short of the upper edge of said body, as is particularly shown in Fig. 3. Said central partition 15 is provided with a vertical slot 16 at its center, corresponding to the slots 14 in the divisional partitions 13, as is also shown in Fig. 3. A number of blocks 17 are located in the central compartment D, extending from one divisional partition 13 to the other and up as high as the central partition 15. These blocks 17 serve to strengthen the structure at its center.
The top portion of the body A is provided with two covers C and C, the cover 0 being located over the compartment B and the cover C over the compartment B, the central compartment D being left open at the top as clearly shown in Fig. 1. Preferably these two covers C and C are connected at their ends by a suitable strip 18. The marginal portions of the covers and their connecting strips 18 rest upon the flanges 1.0 at the top of the body.
Each compartment B and B contains a retaining bar 19 that extends from end to end of the compartment in which it is placed and is capable of vertical movement therein, its upward movement being limited by reason of its end portions engaging with the aforesaid shoulders 12, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. Normally the said retaining bars are held in engagement with said shoulders 12 by means of springs 20, which have bearing against the under face of said bars, and said springs, which are preferably bow springs, extend from one end of the body to the other. A nut 21 is located in each retaining bar 19 at its central portion, the thread of one nut being a right-hand nut and the threadof the opposing nut a left-hand thread. An adjusting screw E is passed through the aforesaid nuts 21, said screw being provided atone side of its center with a right-hand thread and at the other side of its center with a lefthand thread, and corresponding threads en- The outer end portion of the screw is smooth and reduced and ICC under portion of its ends with blocks 27,
passes out through the side of the body through a slot 22; and the outer end of said screw E terminates in a suitable knob 22 The central portion of the screw E is reduced in diameter and smooth, and this portion is received in the slot 16 of the central part1- tion 15, whereby the screw is prevented from having end movement and yet is free to turn. Said screw in turning will draw the retaining bars in direction of each other according to the direction in which the screw is revolved.
Each retaining bar 19 is provided with a series of rods or fingers 24 that extend verti-' cally upward and normally out through transverse slots 25 made in the covers 0 and. C as is clearly shown in the drawings. These fingers24 receive between them the end portions of the labels that are placed upon the covers C and C to be applied to the adhesive surface.
A carrying plate 26 extends from end to end of the central compartment D, and this carrying plate is preferably provided at the which in the lowest position of the carrying plate rest upon the end spacing or strengthening plates or blocks 17 as is shown in Fig. 4. The said carrying plate 26 is provided at its upper central portion with a T-rail 28 that extends from end to end thereof. Spacing the spacing plates being provided with recesses in their lower edges conforming to the contour of and adapted to receive the aforesaid T-rail 28, as is shown in Figs. 3 and 4, so that the spacing plates 29 may be readily slid along the carrying plate to make suitable divisions between the packages of labels. In order that said spacing plates shall be steady when adjusted and remain in proper position when set, each of said plates is provided with a flange 30 at its lower edge on each side, each flange bearing upon the upper face of the carrying plate 26 as shown in Fig. 1. The carrying plate 26 is guided in its vertical movement by securing sleeves 31 to its under face, which. sleeves receive pins 32 extending up from the bottom of the body A, as is illustrated in Fig. 4.
The carrying plate 26 is provided at each of its ends with a pin 33 that extends out through slots 34 in the end portions of the body A, and the ends of a bail 35 receive the pins 33 as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, said bail being pivoted between the ends of its side members to the outer face of the end portions of the body A by suitable pivot pins 36, as also shown in Figs. 3 and 4. Keepers 37 are provided for the bail 35 for the purpose of holding it down in its lower position shown in Fig. 3 when the carrying plate is to be moved upward to bring the spacing plates thereon in position to define the spaces between the bundles of labels; and when said labels are to i be applied to an adhesive surface the bail 35 l is released from its keeper, whereupon the carrying plate 26 will drop by gravity to the position shown in Fig. 4, bringing the upper edges of the spacing plates 29 about level with the upper faces of the covers C and C.
Yokes 33 are secured to the under portions of the body at its outer face, and in each yoke a wheel 39 is mounted, whichwheels are preferably peripherally grooved so that they may be made to travel on suitable tracks; and at one end of a cover for the body an upwardly inclined mirror 40 is located, so that the under face of a board 41 upon which the labels are to be placed, will be rendered visible, thus enabling the operator to see whether the labels have properly adhered to the under face of said board 41, which face is covered with an adhesive material of any description. The board 41 is suitably supported, and the device is moved beneath the said board, the board being carried down so as to engage with the uppermost labels of the packages; or the device may be moved up to meet the board. As the depth of the packages decreases, the board engaging with the fingers 24 from the retaining bar forces said fingers down against the resistance of the springs 20. In this manner the uppermost label of each package on the device is always in position to engage with the surface of the board 41 when said board is brought into proper position rela tively to the device.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
