SUPPORTING ATTACHMENT FOR WINDOWS- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 30, 1907.
Application filed January 2,1907. Serial No 350,456.
- citizens of the United States of America, and
residents, respectively, of Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, W insted, in the county of Litchlield, State of Connecticut, and Burlington, in the county of Hartford, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful .lm-
provemeuts in Supporting .-\ttachments for Windows, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a bracket or scaffold adapted to be supported outside a window; and the object is to provide a device. of this character which will possess a high degree of solidity and security when in use.
The invention may be said to consist in certain features of construction to be more particularly pointed out. in the appended claim. In the drawings: Figure 1 1s a perspective view of the scaffold as applied to the base of a window; Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 12-12, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line 3 3, Fig. 1.
Referring now to these views, A indicates the base of a window frame, and B is the sill outside thereof, this sill here being shown as downward inclined.
C is the latform.
One of t 1e objects of the invention being to render the scaffold adjustable to different widths of window, or for other purposes, the platform is constructed to be extensible parallel to the window, and, to this ent formed in two sections 1), these sections, as shown, being slotted from their inner ends 7 parallel to the. window so as to form a plurality of tongues and slots E and F, respectively. The tongues of one sections fit within the slotsof the other; and a keeper G, in the form of a flat loop secured transversely of each set of tongues near the ends thereof,
affords cllicicnt means for maintaining the two sections in the same horizontal plane. It will be seen that these keepers are disposed parallel to each other and embrace both sections of the platform.
H, H are two supporting brackets of metal which extend outward from the window and preferably overlie the platform at the opposite sides thereof. Outward adjustment of the platform is advantageously provided for by serrating the under surfaces of these brackets, as at a, providing the underlying portions of the platform with serrations b,
and passing clam wing bolts 0 upward through the platform and longitudinal slots d in the brackets for reception at their upper ends of wing nuts e. in its movement relative to the brackets, studs F may be extended upward from the platform at some little distance from the bolts c and in position to stand within the slots (I. it is to.,be noted that serrations a face inward, while serrations I) face outward.
In order to provide for sustaining the platform upon the sill B, each section D is shown as being provided beneath with'an outward extending cleat II, this cleat being preferably located toward the outer end of the section or the side of the platform. For an inclined sill, the lower surfaces of these cleats are correspondingl inclined, as shown, in order that the atform may be level. The inner ends of the cleats are drawn solidly against the front of the base of the window frame by means of screw clamps K carried by the inner ends oftl1e brackets H, said ends being extended downward within the window frame and apertured for the passage of the horizontal threaded stems 7c of said clamps. The inner ends of these stems are furnished with hearing plates m,
To better guide the platform in'which the stems are swiveled and which j may be rovided with a yielding facing a.
It wil be seen that the platform is united with the brackets H with great solidity, precluding any likelihood of separation while in use; Bolts 0 and thumb-nuts e 0 crate to clam the serrated portions of. tffej platform and n'ackcts directly together; and the screw clamps l\, drawing rearward upon the brackets, serve to hold the vertical faces I of the bracket serrations solidly against the opposed vertical faces of the platform serrations, thus materially lessening the strain upon bolts c and nuts-c.
The outer end of the platform 1s advantageously fitted with an upstanding guard L;'
and this guard is very conveniently hinged to the platform so as to fold downward thereon as indicated in Fig. 3. For this purpose, upstanding hinge lugs 0 'may be, disposed at the outer corners of the platform sections D and between the members of each pair of lugs be pivoted the hinge member M secured to the inner face of -the 'uarch The hinge lugs 0 (preferably horned on metal plates M exten ing along the upper surfaces of the sections D at the outer ends thereof; and these plates serve at once to bear these lugs and the serrations I) already referred to and to furnish an efiicient brace for the platform sections.
uard L is prevented from tilting outward i rom the vertical by reason of the fact that the lower ends of the hinge members M are provided with hearing shoulders, which, as
shown in Fig. 3, bear against the ends of the plates M.
' the front of the other.
The guard L being carried at its ends by the relatively movable platform sections D is constructed so to the window as to be extensible parallel simultaneously with the platform, for this pnr .ose being constructed n two sections 0. baid sections are conveniently formed of upright end pieces P, from each of which extend toward the other endpiece two or more rails R, these rails overlapping with the back of one against Insertedbetiveen the ends of each set of rails S; and secured to each block and the ends O l the corresponding set of rails is a loop or The there maybe a block strap keeper T, these keepersbeing parallel and embracing both sections 0;
What is claimed as new is:
In a window scaflolithe combination of a platform adapted to project outward from the base of a window, being constructed to rest thereon} and to bear rearward thereagainst, a plate secured ri idty along each side of the top of the plat? orm, being pro-f vided with a longitudinal series of up-' standing serrations having their forward lel to and overlying said plates, being vertically and longitudinally slottedand rovided with a-longitudinal series oi depending serrations having their rearward faces substantially vertical, said brackets being further provided with rear downturned ends, bolts passing vertically through the platform, plates and slots, clamp nuts threaded on the ends of said bolts, and horizonta screw-clamps threaded through thedown turned ends of the brackets and adapted to} faces substantially vertical, brackets paral-' bear against the inner side of the window base,
