To all w/tmn it may concern.-
Be it known that I, VVILLIAM P. \VIEMANN, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, a citizen of the United States, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in I/Vztter-Purifying Devices for Steam-Boilers, of which improvements the following is a specification.
The invention described herein relates to certain further or additional improvements in that class or kind of apparatus for purifying Water in boilers described and claimed in Letters Patent No. 826,811, granted to me July 24th, 1906, and has for its object among other improvements, the maintenance of acotinnuous uniform pressure on the filtering material, thereby rendering the same more efficient.
The invention is hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of my improved purifying apparatus, Fig. 2 is a similar view on a plane at right angles to the plane of section of Fig. 1 and Fig. 3 is an end view of a battery of boilers showing my improved purifying apparatus connected thereto.
In the practice of my invention, I employ a suitable shell 1 in which the filtering mate rial is arranged, being supported on a perforated diaphragm 2. This diaphragm is preferably supported a short distance from the lower head 3 being clamped between the head and the body of the shell. The lower or exit end of the shell is connected to the boiler or boilers by a pipe 4, while its upper end is connected to the mechanism employed for'effecting the circulating movement of the Water by a port or opening 5 in the head 6, said port or opening being covered with wire netting 7 to prevent the filtering material escaping when it is being cleaned as hereinafter described. It is preferred that the circulating mechanism should be arranged in box or case 8 formed on or secured to the head 6 and having a removable side wall 9. W'hile not limiting myself as regards the terms of the broad claims hereinafter made, to any particular form or construction of mechanism for causing the circulation of the water, I have found a centrifugal pump well adapted to that purpose. The hub 10 carrying the blades 11 is secured to a shaft 12 passing through a stuffing box 13 preferably on the removable wall 9, thus permitting of the removal of the moving parts of the pump with such wall. A ground oint is preferably formed between the end of the hub and the wall 9 said parts being held in contact by pressure against the opposite end of thehub. A suitable motor such as a steam turbine or an electric motor, adapted to impart a uniform rate of rotation, is connected. to the shaft 12. The inlet port or opening 14 is formed in the side wall of the box so that water from the boiler will enter the box in line with the center of rotation of the blades, which are cut away adjacent to said port as shown in Fig. 2. The port 14 is connected by a pipe 15 to the boiler, and to this pipe is also connected a blov-off pipe 16, said pipes being provided with suitable valves 17 and 18. l/Vithin the blow-off pipe is arranged a glass tube 19 to permit of an inspection of the blov-ofl' so as to ascertain when the filter is clean, thus avoiding a waste of heated water. It has been found that air or noncondensable vapors contained in water will separate from the latter and collect around the axis of rotation of a centrifugal pump. By gradual accretions the .volume of air or vapor will increase and proportionately reduce the effective areas of the blades. In order to prevent such detrimental accumulation of air or vapor I provide a drainage pipe 20, me tending to apoint adjacent to the hub as shown and provided with a controlling valve 21. By opening this valve from time to time or leaving it slightly open at all times, any air or vapor which may collect is permitted to escape, permitting the full area of the blades to be effective.
It has been found that a filter consisting of granular material as sand, carborundum, etc, can be more readily and effectively cleaned by a reversal of the flow through the filter, than filters having a fibrous material as mineral wool, and while for the reason stated it is preferred to use a granular filter, the inven tion claimed herein is not limited in that regard. It has been found that when using means such as a reciprocating pump that the filtering material is subjected to varying ICO pressures and that between maximum and minimum pressures the filtering material seems to open up by reason of certain inherent resiliency. By reason of this working a spring-like movement of the filtering material, particles caught from the water will gradually work their way through the filter and again enter the boiler. If however the filtering material is constantly subjected to a uniform pressure, no working or movement of the filtering material will occur, and any particle which has found lodgment will remain stationary thereby decreasing the porosity of the filter and increasing its efliciency. varies a particle which may have been arrested when the water has a certain speed, will be dislodged when the rate of flow fluctuates. This uniformity of pressure is readily attained by a centrifugal pump which is also desirable as no valves are required. By reason of the absence of valves, the flow ofwater 1 through the filter and pump can be reversed, with stopping the pump or while the pump is at rest. the valves in the inlet and outlet pipes are closed, the operation of the centrifugal pump will not have any injurious effect. And further it is characteristic of my improvement that even if the fiow of water through the filter is checked or retarded, as by the choking up of the filter, there will not be any inju rious or material increase of pressure on the filtering material, in other words, with a fixed speed, changes in the rate of fiow on the discharge side of the pump due to choking up of the filter, will not change materially or rapidly the pressure on the filtering material.
I claim herein as my invention:
1. In a water purifying apparatus for boilers the combination of a boiler, a filter connected to the boiler and means connected to the filter and to the boiler for imparting a uniform circulating pressure to the water.

6. In a water purifying apparatus for boilers, the combination of a boiler, a filter con nected to the boiler, a centrifugal pump connected to the boiler and the filter and means for removing air or vapor from the pump.
7. In a water purifying apparatus for boilers, the combination of a boiler and filter con nected to the boiler in such manner as to permit the movement of boiler water through the filter and means arranged in the line of connection of the filter to the boiler for imparting a uniform circulating pressure to the water in its movement through the filter.
8. In a Water purifying apparatus for boil? ers the combination of the boiler, a filter con nected to the boiler and a centrifugal pump arranged in the line of connection of the filter to the boiler.
