To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, WVILLIAM JAMES HANDs, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Toronto, county of York, in the :Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clutches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
-My invention relates to clutches; the ob ject of my invention is to provide a clutch adapted :to transmit a rotary movement in two directions from a driving shaft to a driven shaft, and to provide means for adjusting the clutch to permit movement of the driving shaft without moving the driven shaft; and, my invention consists of the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as herein illustrated, described and claimed.
In the accom anying drawings, forming partof this app ication, I have illustrated one form of embodiment of my invention, in

Referring. to the drawings, 1 designates a two-part casing, adapted to contain the mechanism hereinafter described.
A suitably supported driving shaft 2 has its free end projecting into the casing 1, and the driven shaft 3 has its free end projecting into the casing adjacent the end of the driving. shaft 2. A suitable sleeve of bearing metal .4 is dis osed between the casing 1 and the driving s aft2.
Secured to the driving shaft 2, within the casing :1, isa hub 5, provided with a flange 6 inclined toward the free end of the shaft 2, and continued outward from the shaft into a vertical flange 7, having on one of its faces a lug 8. The vertical flange 7 is continued into a horizontal flange 9,'which is stiffened by an annular web 10. The horizontal flange 9 has projecting therefrom a vertical flange 11, for a purpose hereinafter described.
An annulus 12 is secured to the vertical flange 7, as by means of the screws 13, having its edge abutting against the lug 8. The annular member 12 is provided with a flange 14, projecting therefrom at an angle to the axis of the driving shaft 2. i
tended into a vertical portion 18 provided with a lug 1.9 thereon. Disposed on the ver tical portion 18 of the flange 17 is an annulus 20, abutting against the lug 19, and maintained in position as by means of the screw21.
- The annulus 20 is provided with a flange 22, disposed at an angle to the axis of the driving shaft 2, and at an opposite angle to the flange 14, so that when the flanges 14 and 22 are brought together they exactly coincide. The flanges 14 and 22 being in engagement, and the shaft 2 being rotated in the direction indicated. by the arrow 23, the driven shaft 3 will be caused to rotate in the direction indicated by the arrow 24.
The hub 5 is provided with an interior shoulder 25, and the hub 15 is provided with a shoulder 26. Disposed on these hubs intermediate of the shoulders 25 and 26, is a sleeve 27, adapted to bridge the space between the hubs and between the shafts 2 and 3. The shoulder 25 is adapted to receive the contact of the end of the sleeve 27 and to limit the movement of the hub 15 when it is slidably adjusted on the shaft 3, as hereinafter described. Disposed around the adj acent ends of the shafts 2 and 3, and adapted to ride on the sleeve 27, is a helical spring 28, the thrust of which normally maintains the flanges 14 and 22 in contact, so that the driven shaft 3 will rotate as described. A bearing ring 29 is slidably disposed on the sleeve 27, adjacent one end of and adapted to receive the thrust of the spring 28. Disposed adjacent the bearing ring 29 are balls 30, and adjacent the balls 30 is a second bearing ring 31, held on the shoulder 26 of the hub 15. The plate 29 is adapted to receive the thrust of the spring 28, so that the hub 15 will rotate without rotating the spring.
slidably disposed on the shaft 3, and hearing against the outer end of the hub 15, is a bearing ring 32, adjacent which are disposed balls 33, and adapted to bear on the balls and slidably disposed on the shaft 23 is a second bearing ring 34. Slidably disposed on the shaft 3 is a sleeve 35, the end of which bears against the bearing ring 34 and forms a bearing for the casing 1, corresponding to the bearing 4 on the opposite side of the casing.
A lever 36 is pivoted as at 37 to an arm 38,
which may be secured adjacent thereto in any suitable manner. The lever is secured to the sleeve 35 as by the pin 38, so that when the lever is in the full line position, the flanges 14 and 22 are in engagement, and the shaft 3 will rotate in the same direction as the shaft 2. By adjusting the lever to the vertical dotted line position, the sleeve 35 is moved on the shaft 3, thereby sliding the hub 15, and partly compressing the spring 28, until the flanges 14 and 22 are thrown out of engagement, and the shaft 2 will rotate without rotating the shaft 3. The vertical flange 18 of the hub 15 is provided with a horizontal flange 39, which is stiffened by the web 39, and carries a vertical flange 40.
The upper portion of the casing 1 is provided with a thickened portion 41, through which is projected a non-rotatable stud 42, maintained in position by means of the nut 43. Disposed on the stud 42 adjacent the thickened portion 41, is a bearing plate 44, adapted to receive the upward thrust of the upper bearing cone 45, there being a corresponding lower bearing cone 45 adjacent the lower end of the stud. Upper and lower bearing rings 46 are disposed adjacent the cones, and are adapted to maintain in position the balls 46*, so that the bearing rings 46 may be freely rotated around the stud 42. Secured to or formed integral with the bearing rings 46, are angle iron annular members 47, which carry the annular member 48, which is maintained in position as by means of the screws 49. This annular bearing 48 is engaged by a vertical flange 11 of the hub 5, when the lever 36 is moved to the inclined dotted line position, thus imparting a rotary motion to the member 48. hen the lever 36 is in this position, the shoulder 52 of the sleeve 35 contacts with the casing 1, which is mounted on theshafts 2 and 3 to permit a slight longitudinal movement, so as to make the contact between the flange 11 and annulus 48.
When the lever 36 is thrown to the inclined dotted line position, the flange 40 of the hub 15 contacts with the annular member 48, and causes rotation of the shaft 3 in the direction indicated by the arrow 50, which is reverse to the rotation of the driving shaft 2.
A suitable oil-tight cover or plate 51 is secured to the angle members 47, and is adapted to maintain a lubricant on the bearing parts adjacent thereto.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. 3. In a clutch, the combination comprising a driving shaft, a driven shaft, a hub fixed on the driving shaft and provided with an inclined flange, a hub slidably disposed to rotate with the driven shaft and provided with an inclined flange adapted to contact with the flange of the other hub, a coil spring disposed around the hubs, means for separating the slidable hub from the fixed hub to sepa rate said flanges, and means for connecting a part of the fixed hub with a part of the slidable hub for reverse movement of the latter.
4. In a clutch, the combination comprising a driving shaft, a driven shaft, a hub fixed on the driving shaft and provided with an inclined flange, a hub slidably disposed to rotate with the driven shaft and provided with an inclined flange adapted to contact with the flange of the other hub, means adapted to normally maintain the flanges in engagement, means for separating the slidable hub from the fixed hub to separate said flanges, means for bridging the space between the hubs and limiting the movement of the slidable hub in one direction, and means for con necting a part of the fixed hub with a part of the slidable hub for reverse movement of the latter.
5. In a clutch, the combination comprising a driving shaft, a driven shaft, a hub fixed on the driving shaft and provided with an inclined flange and provided with a shoulder, a hub slidably disposed on and fixed to rotate with the driven shaft and provided with an inclined flange adapted to contact with the inclined flange of the other hub, and provided with a shoulder, means adapted to normally maintain the inclined flanges in engagement, means for separating the slidable hub from the fixed hub to separate the in clined flanges, a sleeve disposed around the hub between said shoulders, and means for connecting a part of the fixed and slidable hubs for reverse movement of the latter.
6. 7. In a clutch, the combination comprising a driving shaft, a driven shaft, a clutch mem ber secured on the driving shaft, a clutch member slidable on and fixed to rotate with the driving shaft, flanged members secured on the clutch members, means adapted to normally maintain said flanged members in contact with each other, means for separating the flanged members, and rotatable means adapted to connect a portion of the clutch members for reverse rotation of one of said members.
8. In a clutch, the combination comprising a driving shaft, a driven shaft, aclutch member secured on the driving shaft and provided with a lug thereon, a clutch member slidable on and fixed to rotate with the driven shaft and provided with a lug thereon, flanged members disposed on the clutch members in contact with said lugs, screws adapted to secure the flanged members in position, means adapted to normally maintain the flanged members in contact with each other, means for separating the flanged members, and rotatable means adapted to connect the clutch members for reverse rotation of one of them.
9. In a clutch, the combination comprising a driving shaft, a driven shaft, a clutch member secured on the driving shaft, a clutch member slidable on and fixed to rotate with the driven shaft, flanged members secured to the clutch members, means adapted normally to maintain said flanged members in contact with each other, a sleeve slidably disposed on the driven shaft and arranged to move the slidable clutch member, a lever pivoted adjacent the sleeve and secured thereto, and rotatable means adapted to connect a portion of the clutch members for reverse rotation of one of them. i
10. In a clutch, the combination comprising a driving shaft, a driven shaft, a clutch member secured on the driving shaft, a clutch member slidable on and fixed to rotate with the driven shaft, flanged members secured to the clutch members, means adapted normally to maintain said flanged members in contact with each other, a sleeve slidably disposed on the driven shaft and arranged to move the slidable clutch member, bearing rings interposed between the sleeve and the slidable clutch member, friction reducing members disposed between the bearing rings, a lever pivoted adjacent the sleeve and secured thereto, and rotatable means adapted to connect a portion of the clutch members for reverse rotation of one of them.
11. In a clutch, the combination comprising a casing, a driven shaft projected into the casing, a driving shaft projected into the easing, a hub fixed on the driving shaft and provided with a peripheral flange, an annulus secured to the hub adjacent the flange, an inclined flange on the annulus, a hub slidably disposed and fixed to rotate with the driven shaft and provided with a peripheral flange, an annulus on said latter hub adjacent its flange and provided with an inclined flange, means normally maintaining the inclined flanges in contact, means for separating the inclined flanges, and means for connecting the peripheral flanges of the hubs.
12. In a clutch, the combination comprising a casing, a driven shaft projected into the casing, a driving shaft projected into the casing, a hub fixed on the driving shaft and provided with a peripheral flange, an annulus secured to the hub adjacent the flange, an inclined flange on the annulus, a hub slidably disposed and fixed to rotate with the driven shaft and provided with a peripheral flange, an annulus on said. latter hub adjacent its flange and provided with an inclined flange, means normally maintaining the inclined flanges in contact, means for separating the inclined flanges, and rotatable means for connecting the peripheral flanges of the hubs when the inclined flanges are sufficiently separated.

In a clutch, the combination comprising a casing, a driven shaft projected into the casing, a driving shaft projected into the casing, a hub fixed on the driving shaft and provided with a peripheral flange, an annulus secured to the hub adjacent the flange, an inclined flange on the annulus, a hub slidably disposed on and fixed to rotate with the driven shaft and provided with a peripheral flange, an annulus on said latter hub adja cent its flange and provided with an inclined flange, means normally maintaining the inclined flanges in contact, means for separating the inclined flanges, a stud carried by the casing and provided with bearing cones, annular angle iron members disposed around the stud, bearing rings carried' by the annu lar angle iron members, friction reducing means disposed between the bearing rings and the cones, and an annular friction member carried by the angle iron members and disposed in contact with said peripheral flanges when the inclined flanges are widely separated.
