Be it known that 1, JOSEPH ALGnn, a citi zen of the United States, residing at Brockton, in the county of Plymouth and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gluing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to gluing machines and the particular type illustrated is a gluing machine adapted for use in those arts in which glue is to be applied smoothly and evenly, as in paper box manufacture. in this art it is of the utmost importance that the glue be applied to the parts under certain conditions of temperature and consistency. in the gluing of covering papers it is essential that the glue be worked most carefully, and l have therefore devised the present machine Which may be used with a gluing stencil for the purpose of applying adhesive to the covering blank.
In the handling of glue under ordinary conditions much Waste is occasioned through the drying and caking of the glue and the supplying of the same in its transference from the glue pot to the surface upon which it was worked.
To avoid these difficulties and facilitate the operations I have devised my present invention Which will be more fully described in the specification which follows, through out which and in the drawings which form a part thereof, like reference numerals indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, Figure 1, is a front view of my machine. Fig. 2, a side view. Fig. 3, a plan view thereof, and, Fig. 4, a sectional view of the upper part of the machine.
1 is a frame upon which is supported a casting 2 which forms a steam jacketed box. tapped at 3 for steam pipe connections. 4 is a removable glue pot fitting into said casting 2.
5 are bearings through the casting 2 through which the reciprocating rods 6 Work. These rods support at their upper end lifting plates 7 to which are attached a glue presenting plate 8. This plate 8 is drained by a series of vents 9 extending therethrough. Inasmuch as the plate 8 is essentially a transfer plate for properly presenting a glue coated surface for a stencil, it is necessary that vents 9 be limited in area so that they leave available the greater part of the surface of the plate for contact with the stencil. It is to be understood that the presence of these vents is only incidental and intended to drain the surrounding areas of surface on which dependence is placed for the presenting of the glue.
The plate 8 as shown has a smooth surface to which the glue will not readily cake and which will be readily warmed and coated on each immersion in the glue pot 4.
10 is an adjustable stop set upon the lift ing plates 7, and 11 is a slotted plate which with the thumbscrew 12 forms the adjustable connection between the rods 0 and the lifting plates 7. At their lower ends the rods 6 are connected to a crosshead 13.
14 is a treadle pivoted on the tie rod 15 between collars 15 and connected by a link 16 to the crosshead l3.
17 is a counter weight connected by a cord 18 to the treadle.
19 are supporting rolls over which the cord runs.
20 is a forked guide member within which the treadle descends having a shoulder 21 undercut on one side of the fork. The treadle pivot allows of a slight lateral movement of the treadlc so that the operative by a side movement of the foot, can engage the treadle when. depressed with the shoulder 21 or by an opposite movement of the foot can disengage the treadle from the shoulder when it is desired to release the same.
The operation of the device is as follows: The machine is suitably supplied with steam through the openings 3 so that the casting 2 is maintained hot and the glue within the pot 4 kept at a suitable temperature. The operative then depresses the treadle which drawing down the (l'OSSllGtMl l3, draws the rods 6 downward until the glue plate 8 is submerged in the glue. As soon as the articles to be coated are ready the trcadle is released by a slight side movement, disengaging it from the shoulder 21, whereupon the treadlc will be raised by the counter weight and the plate be caused to emerge from the glue. As the plate emerges the excess of glue is drained away through the openings 9 and the plate presents an even coating of smooth even liquid glue. Upon this surface the stencil may be pressed to secure a proper coating. As soon as the glue on the glue presenting ICC surface 8 is used up or becomes chilled or caked, the operative submerges the plate by depressing the treadle and catches the same under the shoulder 21 by a side movement of the foot. In this manner the glue is constantly presented as an even and uniform coating Without Waste of material or time.
I/Vhat I therefore claim and desire to W cure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device for presenting glue to a stenoil, a receptacle for holding liquid glue, a glue presenting plate having substantial areas of glue presenting surface, drains of minor area therein for Withdrawing an excess of deposit on said areas, and means for causing the submersion and emersion of said plate in said re ceptacle.
2. In a device for presenting glue to a stenoil, a reciprocating frame mounted to be moved relative thereto, a glue presenting plate mounted on said frame and having substantial areas of glue presenting surface and drains of minor area therein for Withdrawing any excess of deposit on said areas, and a controlling lever operatively connected to said frame for the reciprocation thereof and a receptacle for holding liquid glue supportedin the path of reciprocation of said plate.
3. In a device for presenting glue to a sten- "ci'l, a steam jacket, a reciprocating frame guided therein, a glue presenting plate mounted on said frame and having substantial areas of glue presenting surface and drains of minor area therein, a controlling lever operatively connected to said frame for the reciprocation thereof, and a receptacle for holding liquid glue mounted in said acket in the path of reciprocation of said plate.
