The elevated portion E aids in the drainage of the tie by shedding water to the ends of he tie which are open to permit thorough drainage. On covered bridges, undergroun roads, tunnel work etc. these ridges at E are not required.
To facilitate the attachment of the ties to bridges, trcsllcs etc. perforations G may be fori'ned'to rcccivc spikes. It will be understood from the above that perforations G are not essential features of all of the tics but adapt them for service under special conditions.

Having thus fully described my invention what 1 claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
